That PvP never mattered. It was just a side game mode that people could go play after they had acquired the loot they wanted and PVE got stale.
Casuals grinding PVE kept Destiny alive, not PvP.

This is such a poor take. 1. Destiny is a mix of both game modes. It’s not a great PvE or PvP game but it’s great combining lots of game modes. That’s what makes it unique. 2. The marathon comparison is absolutely nothing to do with Destiny. That’s like saying Destiny was mainly a pvp game because Halo came before it. The most toxic players in this community were always the ones that just focus on one aspect of the game. PvE or PvP because the game isn’t amazing at either. It was always the sum of its parts. Also, most PvE only players don’t like PvP but they realise how and they actually are. That’s a hard realisation for Bungie to manage and keep players engaged.

Having a mix of both is better than one. A healthy pvp can help maintain player count and engagement during slow content periods. Plus a healthy pvp allows for predominantly pvp players to have something to do and incentive to try the game.

If Marathons PVP was actually good, it may change your view. Hard to compare them because one game has had several years (not consecutive tbf) of really engaging and fun PVP with lots of skill expression, builds, game modes, a variety of maps, hardcore and casual modes etc. The other is Marathon.

1 ReplyPVP should have never been in Destiny 1 or 2.
PvP never mattered.
The idea of going and doing pve to get weapons to use in pvp is what got me interested in Destiny in the first place. The mix of the two made it work for me. If D2 came without pvp or if Bungie took pvp out of Destiny then I would not have stayed. I know I’m just a drop in the bucket but I also know there are many that felt/feel the same way I do.

5 RepliesI dunno. I’d say Marathon is proof that a new, paid for hardcore extraction shooter with a very small number of maps, love it or hate it aesthetics and a seasonal gear reset in an already crowded and limited market wasn’t a recipe for success.
