I'm sure many already know this, but the in game indication that the catalyst drops from dungeons and raids is wrong. Last night I was doing some random triumphs and in a solo activity, on normal, K1, a mob in the last boss room dropped the catalyst for me. So it probably drops from any Vanguard activity.
