Theory about what the story could have been
We know the nine are 4th dimension beings, meaning they can move through time. WHAT IF the player is canonically the guardian. And the nine go back in time to kill the us to prevent all guardians so they can escape from reality.

The game has multiverse implications, think that was part of mapping 6d space, while also nodding with Mida... Here is a kicker, an infectious thought (kinda like roku's basilisk), becomes a model of reality... They give you a fundamental understanding of the universe and its make up to the point you are part of their universe, part of their thought, part of their design...
