Marathon's Steep Learning Curve

I had a pretty good time playing Vault Breaker. Initially, it was a rage inducing exercise of frustration and self loathing that forced me to really evaluate how much I wanted to keep running. Even though I'm a PVE Carebear, I was interested in the game and what it had to offer and I found it for 40% off at Green Gaming Man. So, I said why not. I really committed when I picked up the Season Pass and well...I'm gonna get my money's worth. After a few runs, players starting being able to get a few kit upgrades and it slowly started getting easier as you learned the quirks and shortcuts to skip the army of ghost commanders. When folks with blue shields started showing up, I started to follow them closer learning what the hell was going on. I only had to block one toxic sweatlord otherwise lots of "gg's." Eventually, I got the hang of it, sometimes I ended leading the group, other times I'm literally chasing the crew superstar across the whole map. The new player onboarding experience is really bad, I got murdered in the tutorial mission. At least I felt better when the achievement popped up for it. That is as far as I got in Marathon outside of the Vault Breaker but it was enough, I could get CyAc contracts and level up my season pass. I managed to do pretty good in 7 days; I hit Season Rank 84, CyAc VIP5, completed all the Nerdbot codex entries I could, finished Thief Orientation and some of her mastery, only a few exfils left for Recon (likely this weekend), Cryo Exploration Codex, unlocked all sorts of other codex entries, I was even able to buy a prestige weapon then melt it for cradle points and the codex entry/skin, and I now have and nice t3 Assassin skin I can sport when I come back for season 3 The sweat-fest scene just isn't my thing, I really liked the trios vibe and the "free" kit. They handled the upgrading portion of it fairly well. The Kit weapons are decent and having the CyAc VIP skin is a pretty sweet bonus. I really like the punch of the Magnum not a fan of the scoped mods though. If the event does happens to return in the future or they create a system similar to VB for the other PvE content using a currency to upgrade, I'll be ready for VB as I'm sitting on 8k+ T1 vault data.

 • Bungie misled new players by promoting Vault Breaker. Endgame content is for players who are already active and seeking PvE only content. New players should run the following on Perimeter: Rook. Your goal is to collect and leave. Avoid engaging enemies unless you become involved in a conflict at EXFIL. Don't be greedy. It is better to leave successfully with a small amount rather than die with a full backpack. Any other shell of your choice. Your goal is to complete contracts. By using a free Sponsored kit you lose only what you have collected if you die. Also, you can simply complete the contract and then leave the activity. You do not have to collect anything and you gain faction reputation. By following the above advice a new player can be successful, gain confidence, and gradually increase risk.
