I mean what’s stopping a big studio from picking up the IP and making D3?
Are Sony and Bungie so petty that they’d rather let a franchise die than sell it to someone else who could make it profitable?

Probably because Destiny is going down and most likely worth next to nothing…

5 RepliesI have ZERO doubt that destiny could have been made and run for far less money than bungie did. They were way over staffed and had a massive way too expensive building. Labor costs they've had would make any game hard to profit on. A smaller studio with less safe spaces and more talent could get it done for a lot less.

2 RepliesA thing is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it. All the petitions and hype calling for a D3 isn't likely to convince Sony to greenlight the project on its own, but all that interest WILL likely convince Sony that the IP is worth "something," so they're not likely to give it up without demanding an extremely high price.
-
Yes. There's no way Sony would let another studio profit off of their incompetence.

They ruined every single one they brought in a decade I also will never be comfortable with mega corpo sacrifice entire IP and every employee in a studio to save some upper management's face, Sony is a deadend and anyone who thinks they will magically revert their decision after butchering 900 employees is just plainly wrong, this game deserves better

Let's say you bought something for a price you thought it was worth and were very excited about. And then you suddenly find out it isn't worth anywhere near as much as you paid for it. Do you sell it for the much lower price or keep it because of how much you paid for it, which defines it's worth to you?

14 RepliesDestiny 2 was always profitable. Management siphoning profits for bonuses and dead end projects is what gave it the apperance of insolvency.

Sony is shitty and would rather kill a game instead of allowing another studio to make it for fans to enjoy.

Sony are renowned for holding IPs and not doing anything with them.

[quote]I mean what’s stopping a big studio from picking up the IP and making D3? Sony would rather put it in a cupboard beside Resistance, Killzone, Infamous etc.. than give it to anyone else. Beyond that though, why would any other big studio risk the hundreds of millions it would likely take when the recent performance of Destiny 2 has led to the current situation. The remaining Destiny community isn’t enough to sustain D2 or Bungie (hence Bungie needed a new game, but chose unwisely) and the general opinion outwith the Destiny community isn’t very favourable towards the ‘franchise’.

A dead IP on the books contributes to total stock valuation - because there is a paper value for the IP - even if nothing is produced using the IP. I think what triggered the end of D2 was that 700 million devaluation - keeping the IP alive was only contributing to it's devaluation - so they killed it to preserve its book value. Sounds stupid right? But the "potential" for a D3 may be worth more than actually producing a D3.

5 RepliesThe numbers just would not add up, the player base would not make a dint in the production an launch cost. You would have to be technically insane to buy the IP and build a new game. If the game would cost alone 500 m to make and launch that's millions to sell, millions!!!!! Then there's the cost of buying the IP Bungie/Sony cause I don't even know who owns what would probably charge a billion cause you know they need more cars and yachts. The best fantasy you can hope for is that Sony and Bungie are trolling everyone and secretly making D3 to launch with ps6 exclusively

1 ReplyLook at Sony's catalogue of dead or dormant IPs and you have your answer.

Sony can and probably will revive the IP at some point. Though it could be a long while.

Sony being unwilling to sell? Profit potential? Saturated market?

1 ReplyEdited by PK_Haseo: 7/29/2026 5:13:27 PMRemember when “SONY” bought “DriveClub” (Game), they killed it. Remember “Gran Turismo Sport” (Game) they killed that too besides “Concord” (Game).

Edited by THA_3rd_GUY: 7/29/2026 12:07:31 PMThe responsibility of maintaining a live service franchise. At this point in gaming, live service games are just a doomed parasite to whoever thinks it's worth their time and money to invest. And nobody wants to deal with that. Unless they launch D3 as something other then a live service game, but if they do that I guarantee that the majority of people will complain.

D2 IP is far from being worth nothing.
-
Bungie and Sony will sell it if they want to sell it.

5 RepliesYou have to seriously understand the market conditions and interest rates at the time that MSFT made a move and as did Sony. The market for acquisitions is much different, and interest rates are significantly higher. You could literally finance anything as it was free money back then. But, you have to look at it from a buyers perspective. Why am I going to pay, say 1.5B, when I can let this thing tank and pick it up in 6 months for a few hundred million. Then, once I have it, do I really want to invest a few hundred million and a few years into something and build it from the ground up? Take this scenario as it would probably cost 300M to develop a D3. Now, I can take that 300M in this gaming environment and literally buy 10-year treasury bonds at 4.61%. If I hold to maturity, that means I have 473.2M, assuming I reinvested every interest payment, similar to reinvesting in a business. That is a gain of 173.2M with one of the lowest risks in the world. Knowing this, what is my ROI if I have to buy said IP, then pay to develop it over a number of years. I need 300M to break even on the cost of the game, but I also need to cover the acquisition cost... call it 750M. Do you seriously feel this game can generate 1B+?

Sony own all of Destiny’s IP as Bungie sold it to them in their multi million deal. Bungie have zero say in anything to do with Destiny.

The IP belongs to Sony.
