The digital apocalypse...

So... About that all digital future being so perfect and Grand... Destiny... And so many other games... Red war was lost... So many seasons lost... Gear story amazing levels lost... And no one had the brain cells to keep a backup copy? It's funny and very tragic... What will we lose next? When the whole system crashes do to a bug... Hackers? Licensed expiration? A coding error and a firmware update? A server center catches fire because of one overheated fan? or lightning strikes the wrong telephone pole? All could be resolved if you could just have an extra copy sitting on your shelf you wouldn't have to worry about any of that now would you? ... post

  • The digital push by Sony et al, will, I reckon, have dire consequences for the gaming industry. Players / Gamers / Customers - don’t like being farmed for their funds, disposable or otherwise. Already, there is pushback…and it will only harden the more Sony et al attempt to force their corporate greed and monopolistic control over us. Some countries are pushing back, too! IMHO: when MS was able to charge a license fee for every copy of Windows and the suite of MS Word / Excel / etc. - it opened the floodgates to other corporate entities of what could be gained, and what they’re missing out on. A precedent was set…monkey see, monkey do! Bungle - killed Destiny. Bungle - deeply wounded Sony with that overpriced 🍋 Sony - killed Bungle to teach them a lesson. Problem is, the real culprits escaped with golden parachutes…whilst the worker bees were thrown under the bus…and Destiny was buried under the tombstone called Marathon. 400,00+ Signatures…to no avail. A bump in players in Destiny…playing for what?…playing in a veritable ghost town with little or no purpose. How long before the numbers wither on the vine? Player sentiment is solid…as the wheels fall off the Destiny wagon - as they must, as they are…with nearly all Destiny worker bees dismissed - the writing is on the wall. Winter is already nigh… The Hopium: if an eastern entity took an interest in the number of passionate, loyal, Destiny fans, and somehow created a new (similar) follow-on game, eg, Before The Traveller…or even a straightforward D3, that’s the only realistic scenario that would cut the mustard. Sony / Bungle would have zero involvement. That is all. Just my 2d worth. YMMV. Carry On…into the void. Ease Springs! 🖖👻 MTFBWY

      • It's gamers fault. Gamers don't buy disk versions, instead they pay for digital copy. Result is obvious, but suddenly it's not their fault, it's Sony's... More funny, they complained in as for vinyl player, that Sony still produce them and do not realise it's different factory that made them. Vinyl and CD with music made for people who actually buy them a lot. Movies and videogames on Blu-ray barely owned by anyone, it's all digital now, video services with subscription and online services like PSN, Steam, EGS and so on.

        • If your playing a game that requires servers you never owned it you get to play until the servers get shut down which Sony will end up doing to destiny within the next 5 plus years. Sad truth of digital only in general is its gonna happen eventually. The younger generation won't care as much than the next younger generation will care less until digital is the new normal.

          • Depends on the game and what's actually on the disk. Like it wouldn't matter if you have the d2 disk as you couldn't play it once it's shut down. The real issue with Sony going all digital is their monopoly on prices.

              •
And no one had the brain cells to keep a backup copy?
they have the copy, unfortunately, they dont have the engine to play it on anymore. the tiger engine was upgraded to the point were the old data just isnt playable on it any more and would have cost too much to update

                • I didn't pay extra for the ps5 with a disc drive just because it looks better. Might be the last console I own though.

                  • Frankly, I'll always have a hard time believing that. Not in the 2020's, not with the ease of back-up solutions available nowadays, not with the experience of maintaining software that exists now; the only way you can "lose" something like that is either voluntarily (for whatever reason) or gross incompetence of the management.

                  • I was asking that back when Konami didn't have the final build for Silent Hill 2 when they decided to do the HD collection on PS3. I don't understand how these companies cannot keep one (if not two) copies of their work.
