Good evening everybody, this is Aifos coming to you alive from Aria! Yeah, that Aria, that old RP that I ran! If you don't know, that RP was a MURDER MYSTERY, and it originally got its inspiration from Tangle Tower, which is also a murder mystery. Well, Tangle Tower just had a sequel called Mermaid Mask (which is really good, if you like murder mysteries, highly recommend both games), and now I'm in a murder mystery mood.
So, I've decided to start trying to adapt Aria, my old RP, into an actual novel!
Of course, I can't just copy/paste it, so I'm basically rewriting the whole thing from the ground up, while just snatching up Aria's best plot points. Which includes rewriting all of our murder suspects!
But, I want to make sure the murderer isn't too obvious. I found myself correctly guessing the murderer in both Tangle Tower, and Mermaid Mask purely based on vibes, which I would rather not happen here. So, I want some feedback before I actually put the mystery together. I went and typed up some early rough draft character introductions, and I want you, the general populace of the Offtopic subforum, to tell me which one of these characters you would guess at a glance to be the murderer.

Tl;dr? Here's my point!
I'm writing murder mystery. I want to make sure murderer isn't too obvious. Tell me who in this list you would assume to be the murderer based on vibes alone.

But that's all for now, folks! Jambuhbye!

1 ReplyEdited by UnwiseGeoduck84: 7/23/2026 6:04:21 AM
Aubrey is a murderer, but is she the murderer? I’d go Faraday. They’re already trying to put ideas in the air about how things went. FERN’s the second guess, but surely you wouldn’t make the thing you’ve been talking about obviously being the murderer to spite me, would you?
Edit:
Upon 3 seconds of thinking, Faraday is literally just Joshua. I have played these games before, so unless there’s a switcheroo, hit me with Light or the sister. Lights incredibly normal, and the sister makes for good narrative drama.
5 RepliesEdited by Dragokin: 7/23/2026 2:00:35 AMFERN....
Less about the character more about the interaction... Lots of red flags... #1 Why are you here?... Even the interpreters not sure... Very deflective of blame from square one Already questions... it's a hologram? Implied to be mobile at the very least... #2 From what little I understand of the murder scene minimal evidence blood everywhere(edit:lack of blood) but no obvious tellings I have so little to work with but a hologram wouldn't leave evidence an ai can conceal easily... holographic personalities can be in multiple places at once in a network... hard light weapons won't leave marks or traces that could be easy to follow... Plus no one's going to suspect the toaster killed the maid... #3 Personality feels one dimensional... restricted lots of room for understanding, growth or corruption... after all figuring out more about the killer is the point #4 claiming to be alive without doubt... But it's obviously a machine which speaks to potential degradations or instabilities unless this is a true sentient AI then there's more wiggle room Excited... Inquisitive... But Physically incapable of mourning?... Emotionally locked externally? (Voice mannerisms etc) But can still "feel" at least to a degree... Lots of potential would make for a cliche twist but a twist nonetheless... Lots of movies and books play this card in various ways... I can only guess that this character might receive a number of votes on who done it... And given the character description as a whole... being on the lineup in the first place is already another red flag Definitely my top candidate...
2 RepliesSeer...
immediately takes control claims grand preemptive awareness...if true Probably knows who the murderer or is the murderer... Unless there putting on a show... Then my mind wanders to them being a hapless fool or the actual murderer openly telling the investigator off because power trip... So the warning could be interpreted in a number ways... The cryptic warning... You're the outsider... investigation will be dangerous... A tangled plot... The light of life replaced with the cold of death... And something artificial... Could be a hint could be a red herring... Leads me to believe one of the "bots" did it... But that could also be by design... more research necessary
2 RepliesETA...
descriptive but reflective... Unsurprised... Probably neutral just going through the motions fully understanding the situation... a good cover without any history or context... Potentially a hired gun or removing a set piece to resolve a bigger picture... Could be a set up style fall guy...or a helpful NPC... or a really neat plot twist... Too early to tell for me anyway....
I'll try to get to the others as the day goes Don't have a load a lot of time to sit and type

9 RepliesETA
is uncaring and aloof. Like K Mart said they would have their own reasons completely above the moral systems of petty mortals.
FERN
seems sweet but she definitely would snap in the right situation and release all the pent up anger she’d been holding in. Jekyll and Hyde but in the extreme.
