The End of Destiny 2: Is the End of Bungie!

Looking at Bungie’s trajectory over the past several years, it’s hard for me to be optimistic about its future as an independent studio. Since 2023, the company has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs, reducing its workforce by well over 600 employees. Destiny 2 has reportedly fallen short of financial expectations, Sony has recorded a substantial impairment related to Bungie, and major restructuring has already shifted teams and responsibilities within the PlayStation ecosystem. From my perspective, the question is no longer whether Bungie will look different in the future, but how different. I think the most likely outcome is that Bungie gradually becomes more integrated into PlayStation Studios rather than continuing to operate with the level of independence it once had. Sony invested billions of dollars to acquire Bungie, so I don’t expect the studio to disappear overnight. However, unless Bungie delivers another major commercial success, I believe we’ll continue to see the studio shrink and its developers absorbed into other PlayStation teams over time. I hope I’m wrong, because Bungie has created some of the most influential shooters in gaming history, but based on the trends of the last few years, this seems like the most realistic path forward.

They’ve been on a downhill trajectory ever since they introduced the “content vault” with the removal of Red War, new players were introduced to “New Light” which never matched Red War as a tutorial. This effectively ended new player onboarding. Not to mention anyone with a brain to think and eyes to see could tell you Destiny 2 was going to die after Final Shape. You can’t have your “Endgame” moment and not have the subsequent drop off. People moved on.

    • I'm giving it a few years if bungie don't get something good pitched or marathon turns around Sony will shut bungie down and just accept the loss.
