How to be a Sherpa

Hello everyone I'm wondering if there is a way to become a Sherpa for dungeons/raids? If so how would you go about that. I've noticed a lot of new and returning players looking to do end game stuff but never have people to run with and I know what that's like 1000% and I'm willing to help and teach whenever I can but how would I even go about becoming someone in the community that is willing to help. Any feedback is very much appreciated 😊

There are a few ways. When I sherpa... I'm a FtF lurker. I look for "need help" stuff... in all different types of activities. And then I commit to getting them the clear. And I like, as a solo, helping w 3-man stuff... because I can carry everyone if I need to, but that's not normally how I play it. I like to teach them, show them a seam... In their "voice"... What do you like? Let's minmax it for you. That stuff. 2. Not every discord group is about juicing content creator metrics. Find a discord/community group. I recommend Destiny2Science. I like being a secret sherpa in LFG because it can be a pain for some people. A small anecdote... I met a guardian the first season Conquests was out, it was Delve. They had been trying for 2 days straight. So, in a situation like that... I'll put the run on my back, because they were suffering for so long. I did it first try. Clutched Boss solo, because it was bugged in the beginning and taking all the rezs earlier than it was supposed to. I told him this... that we needed to push. He played smart... despite dropping at boss, the other fill did not. Rushed the Hydra. The elation. Dude was stoked. Those situations feel great as a sherpa. Campaigns are a good category, because that stuff is harder to lfg for players after release.

I may not be one as I’m quite antisocial and struggle with planning and even starting to get things together But if I am right the best way is this, you look for any knowledge of the dungeon/raid you plan on doing it first by learning then willing to explain it to people you plan to shepra in a very easy to digest manner and work more like a team rather then just a leader and expecting to put all the burden on yourself If you see someone not understanding you could try and make them see what need to be done by making them start the encounter, say for example your doing Crota, make them pick up the chalice of light and explaining when the bar is full tell someone to take it from them Some things don’t have overcomplicated things, one that is beginner friendly is vog as it’s not too heavily mechanic heavy and quite simple to understand But if you want to get more advanced, you could try recommending roles for players and make a balanced team, two support, three damage dealers and one add clear, depending on what class they are playing, supports can be warlocks or hunters, well of radiance and tether will help with damage, then we have damage, each class can do this as thunder crash, golden gun or anything you want for warlock (only cause not a lot of raid bosses are up close and personal) The last one being add clear, it’s important but it has to be a warlock mainly a arc one with their abilities to have arc buddies and Tesla coils, but I could be wrong and simplify it to the point it’s easy

  • I'm giving an honest answer here. The number one thing you can do is be honest about your own experience and abilities. My first raid "Sherpa" was a person who invited me to the lantern pit in Crota's End & said "you dont have to do anything, just keep up & try not to fall in a hole or die"... we proceeded to wipe non-stop for the next 2 hours, with her running around, frantically screaming for me to "take it, take it before I die" , which I had no idea what she was talking about, cuz she never explained anything. We never cleared the encounter. When I later learned about Raid.Report, I checked her stats & realized that she only had 6 clears of the raid. She couldnt even teach me anything if she wanted to, cuz she had minimal experience & was calling herself a "Sherpa". Being a Sherpa is not just about "knowing the mechanic", its about knowing the in&outs of the encounter, so that you can explain it in a way for ppl to understand the goal & their role in it. Its about assigning a role to the newbie that wont set them up for failure, and knowing the encounter well enough to correct mistakes instead of constantly screaming "just wipe" if something goes wrong. Thats the type of crap that makes ppl never want to raid again... I'm pretty competitive tho, so I made it my goal to be better than her, to be a better guide to the newbs out there. I've got hundreds of Crota clears now, and can do a Sherpa run in less than an hour. I help point out the holes in the ground by shooting my Lost Signal to light them up, not just saying "dont fall in a hole". I assign the new person to be the 3rd one across on bridge encounter, that way they're never alone on one side or the other. I assign them to preserve the chalice on Witch encounter, cuz killing the witches takes some coordination & no need to overwhelm them with mechanics on every single encounter. Let them just observe the harder roles on their first run & assign them a role thats easy to execute, or just ad-clear on the difficult encounters (but NOT every encounter). These are the types of things you should understand to consider yourself a "Sherpa"... otherwise you're just a teammate who's also still learning the activity, and yea, thats what I am in some activities too (hello DP)... but the important thing is to be HONEST about that & not set unrealistic expectations.

Out of all the things, I have realized this: Destiny may genuinely be one of the first games that people experience where it isn't necessarily a game where you can sit down and just shoot aliens. I mean you can play that way. First time encountering mechanics. People not understanding why they don't get the thing they want immediately after doing something. The very first instance of a "grindy" game. A game you have to actual out in effort to learn. And that might mean looking outside of the game. Very common in MMOs. Or even why mechanics exist in the First place. "They serve no purpose" type of deal. So making people realize that raiding isn't just a long mission and that they actually have to put in effort to do what I think is "put the square in the square hole" mechanics, is the first step to understand and teach. Definitely caught me off guard my first times.

            • when i used to do it, i just fell into doing it. Used to LFG a whole lot and over time, after i was confident in knowing all the mechanics to my favorite raids, i found myself posting in LFG willing to teach. Start with whichever raid/dungeon is your favorite, learn to do every possible roll and the mechanics to do so, then pending on wich one it is, get 1 or 2 people you know that can help with the sherpa. Bonus points if you pick up little tricks here and there for encounters. The people you teach will stand on your every instruction going forward. For example, Leviathan Dog encounter (yea that long ago). I had memorized the route to get enough stacks without stopping, so everyone can one shot the dogs. It was nothing special, but to the people learning for the first time, they were over the moon about it. I can go on all day on this subject, but thats the basics to it. Also, most importantly, you need to be very patient with the people you teach.

            • Step 1: learn the mechanics or get good enough at whatever activity to carry/teach Step 2: Post that you’re a Sherpa on LFG, or just join random inexperienced players. Step 3: Look in the mirror knowing that you have a beautiful smile

Join this discord and scroll down to “find a Sherpa” if you see something you can help with then you can get a hold of the person who posted. You can also try the lfg in this app but it’s much easier to communicate in discord. https://discord.gg/d2lfg

No official way to start. Just look for groups on FtF and join them if they are new or looking for help. Most of the time, you will find a group of newbies with one or two veterans grateful for someone to help out and teach. Or you could be the "ring master" and just walk everyone through the mechanics. I normally just drop in, help teach and organise people, and pull in friends if needed. You don't have to be super experienced, just willing to teach whatever you know and be patient.

              • Sherpa title is just a name of someone who leads and explains encounters. In other words, my little nephew of 10 could become a so called "Sherpa" after doing 1 encounter and starts teaching other people. Poof im a sherpa now

              • In another life I was a raid sherpa. Mainly GoS but also DSC, Vow, LW, VoG. I still do the occasional run of GoS for nostalgia and for fun. I currently have 892 carries in GoS, though there are probably close to 100 or so people with more (or many more) carries in GoS than I. Generally though, I know my way through all aspects, all rolls etc. of a few raids and all dungeons, though Equilibrium I am a little luke warm with. I started my journey by trying to get Divinity back in Beyond Light and having a number of absolutely abysmal experiences in the raid and with the puzzles. Even people in my clan hated the raid because of the reputation of how miserable it could be, especially Div runs. I began running the raid with any group, any teaching run, any Div run I could join. I wanted to be able to take a 4 stack of new players in there and have a good experience. Ultimately … to sherpa … learn the content and learn how to effectively and quickly pass that knowledge on to others. You will be the leader of the group, own it and be a good leader. Read the room, keep moral up, adjust when needed. Accept that everyone learns the same way and sometime over-explaining does not actually help. As you teach runs, your teaching runs will improve.

              • As most have said, you just start doing it and putting up teaching run posts. But if you want some sort of actual process to get to a level where you feel confident in your ability to take people through raids/dungeons it starts with just doing that activity a bunch. I found the most effective way to go about it is to stick with joining teaching runs for the first like couple of runs. Even if you dont necessarily need to be taught the mechanics, it helps to see how other people teach and learn what the best ways of explaining encounters are. Knowing encounters is the easy part being able to impart that knowledge to others is the hard part. Its also a good place to just observe group dynamics. As the sherpa you're also kinda in charge managing the group dynamics, helping the slower players while keeping the morale up after wipes. As you do more runs you'll pretty quickly get to the point where you know the strats and the back up strats, what explanations work better and how to cover mistakes on the fly. If you feel like you can be doing more than one person's job and won't be surprised by much then you're probably good to start teaching. Also keep in mind that you are responsible for how people experience the raid not just getting them a clear. Ive often had people in raids that talk about how they got dragged through vog by a 3 man group of speed demons and had an awful experience because they didnt get to do or see hardly anything. You can make it really cool but really boring so keep that in mind. Dragging them forward, skipping the cool stuff or extra chests is fast and works, but it sucks for them. Be chill and let them enjoy the journey even if it takes longer. Thats my 2 cents

Ngl, you just do it. Just start making a ton of posts that just say teaching. that's about it. High recommendations tho: Get 2-3 other friends that can help in a pinch. Always good if the team is struggling or struggling to fill the team. Remember you're in charge. If an experienced person does join, don't let them run the team with their preferred method if you don't like it. 90% of the time, if someone experienced is trying to take over it because they're there to show off, not help. However, don't ignore your betters either. The sherpa space has some real wackos with 100s to 1000s of clears with inexperienced ppl on the team most clears so they know a thing or too, and you will find them, they wouldn't have those insane numbers if they weren't consistently looking for teams to join. And finally, it's a team, not a classroom, make sure to "read the room," so to speak. Some people want to learn everything, some just want a clear, some are fine doing things your way, others may find it hard to follow. Be flexible, thats whats most important. Edit: Extra final note, you will have long completion times, and it will sometimes slog on. Any "sherpa" boasting fast completion times isn't teaching anything. They're a carry service.

                  • I used to teach people how to run GOS, VOG, prophecy, POH, and only a few times how to do Duality. Honestly it all comes down to doing the ones you enjoy and want others to enjoy. Always make sure you know everything about the raids and dungeons you do. Including the things people need for exotics that involve either the dungeon or raid you want to teach. Everything after the 1st run of teaching it just becomes easier to the point it is second nature and you learn how to simplify the encounters even more.

More people like this! 👍🏻👍🏻 I see you’re in a clan. So I’d say pick a specific raid, run it a lot with them and do/learn each role until you’re comfortable picking any of them up. That way, when someone you’re guiding fails or falls, you’d be able to help out in a pinch. Or swap roles with them after a wipe, etc. And work your way from there to the next raid. Also, I found what helped me was to write my own walkthrough of raids. For example, when I used to teach DSC, I noticed people (the kinderguardians) got confused with the “traditional” explanation of the orb dunk mechanic at the boss. (A lot of sherpas tend to number the buckets 1-6 etc, and those changed depending on where the boss went). I sort of simplified that during my runs and made it easier for them to remember. Good luck!

Honestly just having the kind heart and willingness to run something is all you really need. Experience and loadout knowledge are not needed but will help immensely. You can always just go in with someone and figure out the stuff with a YouTube video. Atleast for dungeons. Raids experience is a requirement because keeping 6 players together for a long time outside of a contest run is very difficult. In my opinion it’s way more fun going in blind with people and figuring out mechanics and exploring for dungeons. For being a Sherpa in general having patience and time are all you really need. Everything in the game has a guide on YouTube so you don’t really need experience per se. Just find a YouTube video and send it to your two sherpaees. My biggest advice is a Sherpa is not carry so don’t just stick them on add clear and do the mechanics for them. Try to have the players being sherpaed do the mechanics so they actually learn how to do stuff. For dungeons you can easily Sherpa two people. Raids are a completely different beast so like others have said try to get 2 friends or people you trust to help teach. Speaking from experience I tried sherpaing 5 people through GoS worst experience of my life lol. Working game knowledge and meta will help too but aren’t a requirement. Like say someone is under performing on dmg being able to inspect their loadout and give them advice is something that will help out. Good luck out there i hope this helps.

                  • The clan I’m in a mega clan, but we have a Sherpa role itself in the discord, but what we do for Sherpas(I’m not one but I do the runs constantly) tips I have 1. Get 2 people you enjoy gaming with and you know can pick up on the wipe mechanics if they are needed. 2. Warlock is the best for teaching Sherpas due to the fact that you can do good dps and keep the Sherpee alive easier and don’t have to rely on someone else for the well, you can also debuff easily on the lock. 3. Always assume that you’ll wipe 2 times and make sure the team is aware of this 4. Posting helps a lot, but if you join discords there’s a ton of useful bots that you can schedule a run with. 5. Pulling infographics is super helpful!

Make an Lfg and say teaching but also do try to raid/dungeon report the people that join because if ur trying to also get sherpa clears the people must have 0 clears on said activity and if u dont care about that...then just run it
