Champions of Light and Dark.
Seeing the final sort of dialogue we get from Lodi has left me a bit… perplexed to say the least.
I’ve felt that for the longest time, I understood who, or at least what the Winnower was, and its relationship to Darkness. From Unveiling, it’s suggested that the Winnower and Gardener unlike the Traveler and Veil, are the full embodiments of Light and Dark. Not just great wellsprings of it. This aligns with the powers of Light and Darkness really well, given that Light creates energy and mass, while Darkness shapes it. A Gardener plants the flowers, but the Winnower will remove the chaff and the bad, shaping the garden. (Thus why Darkness is the power of the mind, and yet still also a power of Shape and Entropy)
But now, with this most recent information, it sounded as though the Fate Sagas climax was building to an ultimate confrontation between us, with the backing of a Nine empowered Sol, against the Winnower… which to me doesn’t make sense. You can’t be a Champion of the Darkness if you are the Darkness itself. We, the Guardian aren’t just Lightbearers either. We have not only used Darkness, but mastered it to a degree where we embody the unbridled and uncontrolled force of Light and Darkness together in Prismatic. How can we go against the very force that is half our total power? We might stand diametrically opposed to the Winnower own philosophy, making us champions of Light, but unlike the Nine, the Winnower is a greater Paracausal force.
Can someone explain this to me?

I’m cooking up a post for what I think they had in mind for this and what major known issues are left unresolved.

2 RepliesShort answer is they retconned things to make writing the storyline easier. They figured they could get away with it since so much of what they are retconning isn’t in the game anymore. No one can earn Dust or Unveiling anymore, so they wouldn’t see the issue. Cause your impression is right, that’s what we were given to believe. Bungie invalidated Unveiling leading up to FS. https://www.pcgamer.com/bungie-weighs-in-on-the-current-argument-raging-through-the-destiny-2-lore-community-has-the-witness-been-retconned/ So it’s just Witness propaganda despite it reading as an actual refutation of the Witness, it’s ethos and was actually rooting for us to win. But it also means they nixed the only explanation to be given during the entire franchise and Fate was the start of their retconning it. So the Gardener and Winnower are now lesser than the Nine, if the Gardener is even a thing anymore since they stripped a lot of her meta plot and gave it to the Nine. Now the Nine are the laws that allow and regulate paracausality, exactly what the Gardener did in Unveiling. They manipulated events for us to win, not the Gardener using foresight and its control over space time with Elsie. (And how darkness played a role in it too) And to boot, they made up a whole new power that negates paracausality? Made from their very bodies no less? Just magically making new powers like it’s a cookbook recipe? It doesn’t make sense unless you look at it as a retcon and some wizard of oz hand waving to shoehorn a new narrative right onto the high stakes rail with no preamble. The Nine are dark matter beings whose dust exists in three dimensional space but they can’t physically exist here? They depend on sentient life for their own sentience but predate actual creation? So no one made paracausality? Paracausality exists… cause reasons? Cause they couldn’t have planned ahead, there was no life for them to be sentient, the Winnower is below them now. And with no Gardener or Winnower as masters of creation, there is no one to make the power exist. So we got this magical counter to the Vex threat…on accident? And naturally these manifestations of cosmic law all got fixed locations in our solar system on pure coincidence, cause they shouldn’t have been self aware yet to do it themselves. It really looks like they planned the FS to not answer any questions and wanted use all the unfinished threads to make something new, probably thinking it would revitalize interest.
