Feedback: Destiny 2 on SteamDeck and Linux

I was advised by a moderator to make a post here if I wanted to open a dialogue about repealing bungie's policy to ban linux users from playing destiny 2. To make my point and goal clear: - I would like to understand why this policy is a strict ban in the first place. - I would like to understand what reasons, technical and otherwise, go into stopping a group of people from playing a game that otherwise works fine (the game launches, and has worked in the past on platforms that use linux, and individuals from time to time have been able to make it work, before getting banned soon after) - I would ideally like for bungie to opt in to BattlEye compatibility being enabled - I am NOT asking for bungie to natively support linux, I do understand the technical effort behind doing this, hence why my request is this instead. I have looked through the past 7 years of bungie's communication on the matter, and as I understand, there has been no specific comment as to a technical reason for this ban policy. Am happy to engage in a dialogue about this and the reasons why the ban is in place. I would appreciate if those of you who consistently meet people like myself with hostility in these posts to curb it a little bit, and realise that 99% of us just want to play the damn game, we're not some group of state sponsored hackers trying to make the game worse for everyone. Also, evidently, banning linux users never actually did anything in regard to cheaters anyways. Thanks again, have a nice day.

  • In short: the game has an integrated anticheat (always has had one, BattlEye came way later as a backup/other enforcer) that cannot work properly in a Linux environment, no matter what you use to get the game to work. I guess that when they made Destiny 2 work for Stadia they simply developped a version that cut the integrated anticheat out, since the game was meant to run in a closed, secure platform, which clearly won't do in an open setting.

    • It could be as simple as Bungie just not considering the marginal gain from people playing on Linux being worth the time/effort/cost involved. Linux is still a very small platform (around 5% of steam users). Given that the PC has the smallest D2 playerbase I imagine they just don’t think it’s worthwhile. You need to consider other things such as Bungie’s in house anti cheat. Also Battleye runs in kernel mode on Windows but in user mode on Linux, making it inherently far less secure from cheating.

    • In short, Bungie said NO.
