So, we are getting the last update (and it looks kinda sweet)
I am sad to see this game is winding down. But I have a possible solution. Sell the servers. Have it cost a few hundred dollars for a lifetime license. Use the Bungie servers as a proxy to prevent people from leaking their IPs, and allow some modification so users can develop their own content.
This won't be free; it will take a lot of development time to pull off, but if you do, you will become one of the most beloved games of the era. You will open the door to a world of creativity. You would truly unleash this community. Heck, while you're at it, let devs be a little lax on what kind of anti-cheat they require. I would love to run this game on Linux one day.
And in the long term, this is probably cost-saving. Let server owners handle moderation and a lot of the infrastructure. This could save you a lot of money.
love and hope

What the game needs isn't selfhosted servers, what they gotta do is make it work OFFLINE period, even if it means cramming it in the game client (game launcher) so that it just works, online only games are something from a time long past that should've stayed in the past but no studios keep making games like that because "people see the new shiny, so they want the new shiny"

For context about how server costs bother publishers, cod 2 is still online & works, 20 years since it ended. Point was, they don't, the costs are miniscule.

B isn't going to sell source code to their own proprietary engine. Not in a thousand years.

It would need you to sighn an agreement that the person hosting the server take on all responsibility for people's account safety and because it's Sony they can't profit from it.
