Space Opera vs Soap Opera

Destiny began as a sci-fi fantasy mystery driven space opera. What i think killed d2 narratively speaking is trying to make it a soap opera focused on interpersonal relationship drama. Most guardians don't care about Zavala's dead wife, Osiris and Saint's relationship, Maya and her wife, etc. We cared about exploring Sol, discovering mysteries of the traveler and the golden age, nezarac's curse, etc. If they ever make a d3 plz leave the relationship drama out of it or at a minimum. Honestly they even turned the Hive pantheon into a bunch of jaded siblings. Witch queen was the beginning of this imo even though it was still a decent story. Hope to see you all in the future if this game ever comes back. o7

Yeah, they added a ton of fluff and word salad instead of diving into the mysteries. We learned so little about core aspects of the story. The best lorebook for an origin story was dismissed by devs to excuse why FS had no revelations and was just a lame attempt at a nostalgia trip. Cause for everyone who isn’t a Cayde fanboy, that was really zero payoff and kinda slap in the face when they showed the Winnower in Nacre’s lore tab. Like ‘yeah we are just going to ignore this whole meta plot and not care’ They intentionally made the main story as shallow as possible so they could word salad everything without explaining anything. Then fluffed it with the sorta stuff that should have been nothing more than lore tabs and tower dialogue. All because they didn’t follow Statens blueprint and thought they could do better. Cause in the OG base game we learned about Dark and Light being connected and instead they dragged that crap out for five years. Just shows how much depth Statens story had compared to this slop we got. If they do resume they need to cut out everything after the fs episodes and pick it up from there. Fate saga is retcon spaghetti that sucks and makes no sense

  • I think there is a place for Zavalas backstory, as it is a tragedy, just as Saladin losing the rest of the Iron Lords is a tragedy. And romance is a very useful tool to build emotional. A partner is going to have more extreme reaction to the death of their significant other than an acquaintance. Look at Heresy for that point. And Mayas conviction, being to bring back her wife and steal away the Golden Age so as to return the present day to it is such a cool idea, albeit executed poorly given that unlike Dredgen Bale, she doesn’t feel in league with other parts of humanity. I mean, surely their’d be some people who would like to see the return of the Golden Age and would work with Maya on that front. But I do get the Soap Opera complaint when it comes to Saint and Osiris. It’s not like we are saving a lost lover like we had in Season of the Dawn. It’s just “oh, is my love real?” And that kind of gets annoying because it isn’t an Epic. Tragedy and Epics go together. A tragedy can make an epic greater and conversely, an epic can make a tragedy more dramatic. Saint questioning if his love for Osiris is real isn’t a tragedy. Eris dying is a tragedy. Zavalas guilt is a tragedy. Maya trying to bring back her wife, only to end up murdering her because she isn’t “perfect” is a tragedy.
