Instead of waiting endlessly for the "when is Bungie finally going to update us on what's next in D2" the wait will now commence for "when is Bungie finally going to eat crow and resume D2 development" after:
-Sony discovers their market positively plummets the hardest it ever has, and after
-Sony realizes Bungie should never have been trusted to develop a game that pivots squarely upon a feature that their flagship game had been (and notoriously so) most neglectful on.
I fully expect Sony to look at the incessantly-falling numbers that this announcement brings, and orders them to resume D2 development and completely abandon Marathon for the money pit that it is. Bungie has chosen the Darkness. This could not be more on-the-nose of what the Witness wanted to happen.

Destiny 2 hasn't made profit in years Sony want it gone. If it was still profitable Sony would still want to support it.
the wait will now commence for "when is Bungie finally going to eat crow and resume D2 development"
Unlikely to ever occur. With D2 officially in maintenance mode and Marathon on the path towards being shut down, Sony is more likely to break Bungie apart and disperse whoever is marginally useful to other teams/departments. You're more likely to see a push towards a D3 from that team and purportedly that's not in the works either. The Destiny universe is basically dead.

I sure hope you’re right

Fr, and the witness is still ugly as heck too similar to what sorts of art appears in marathon that few of us actually enjoy bruh
