Fraudulent Steam Key Redemption – Request for Guidance (Marathon PC)

Hello, I’m looking for guidance regarding a fraudulent Steam key redemption involving Marathon (PC). I purchased a legitimate Steam key for Marathon from Fanatical (authorized retailer) to use as a giveaway in my Discord server. After announcing the winner, an impersonator created a nearly identical Discord account (same name and profile image, with only a minor character difference) and contacted me before the actual winner did. I mistakenly sent the Steam key to the impersonator. The incident was identified and reported within approximately two hours. Fanatical has issued a refund as a goodwill gesture but informed me that only the publisher can revoke a redeemed key. I am requesting clarification on the following: 1-Is it possible for Bungie to review and revoke a Steam key obtained through documented impersonation fraud? 2-If so, what is the correct channel to submit evidence (proof of purchase, screenshots, Discord user ID, timestamps)? 3-If not, is there an official fraud reporting process for cases like this? I can provide: -Proof of purchase -Giveaway announcement screenshot -Impersonator vs legitimate account comparison -Discord user ID of the impersonator -Timestamp evidence Thank you for any direction or assistance.

Please note that I am not a lawyer, nor am I certified to give any legal advice. This is information gained from personal research from the web, which is also generally not considered a lawyer or certified to give legal advice. Unfortunately, as it was you that gave out the key incorrectly, there's not much to be done on anyone's end but yours. You can report the user to Discord for impersonation, and that's about it. When you run any kind of giveaway or raffle, you have a duty to verify that entrants and claimants are legitimate and valid. So, with that being the case, I personally think your best bet would be to purchase another key and give it to the legitimate winner, and write off the other key as a learning experience. The alternative is to contact your local authorities and inform them of a theft by fraud, and follow that forward to reclaim the money from the fraudulent individual, but that would probably cost a lot more time, effort, and additional funds than purchasing a new key to give to the actual winner.

  • Fanatical has confirmed they cannot revoke keys and do not have a direct escalation channel to Bungie for individual cases. They have issued a refund but advised contacting Bungie through official channels regarding potential revocation. If a Bungie moderator is available, I would appreciate guidance on the correct fraud reporting route.

    • If Fanatical are an authorised retailer for Marathon keys then it will be up to them to contact whoever they sourced the keys from, be it Bungie, Steam, or another retailer about the situation.
