Serious question btw, is that something Sony could do? Bungie looks to be treating Destiny the same way they treated Halo, they're bored with it and want to work on something new.

Not easily. Destiny is a massive codebase. The new company would have to also hire experts on the game engine from Bungie or spend months or years getting their employees trained on it. There's also the server end that has the same issue. As well most games today are partially built with licensed components. The new company would have to license all of those components as well. The codebase for Destiny 2 and it's backend is far more complex than the operating system it runs on. No company is going to take that challenge on a product that isn't growing.
