Can Destiny be given to another studio?

Serious question btw, is that something Sony could do? Bungie looks to be treating Destiny the same way they treated Halo, they're bored with it and want to work on something new. Edit: I really appreciate the actual replies to my question. Thank you.

  • Not easily. Destiny is a massive codebase. The new company would have to also hire experts on the game engine from Bungie or spend months or years getting their employees trained on it. There's also the server end that has the same issue. As well most games today are partially built with licensed components. The new company would have to license all of those components as well. The codebase for Destiny 2 and it's backend is far more complex than the operating system it runs on. No company is going to take that challenge on a product that isn't growing.

    • R.I.P. Bluepoint. I honestly would’ve loved to see their take on D1, especially with anything involving The Hive…

    • In all seriousness, yes, that could happen and is not uncommon at all. One of the cleanest examples of this is when Bungie left Microsoft in 2007. MSFT created 343 Industries, and they ran Halo and had a few releases afterward. In financial terms, think of it as a studio transfer or development shift rather than simply handing an asset off.

    • They could but would you give your house to someone or would you rather they buy it?

      • Yes but with all the bad press around the game plus how it's been doing I doubt any studio would touch it.

      •
Serious question btw
It really shouldn't be. Competent dev companies aren't sitting around waiting to work on another company's IP.

        • With the state of the current engine? Probably not. Maybe D3 could be re-sourced , depends entirely on the fate of Marathon I guess.

        • Realistically, Sony could assign it to one of their other in-house studios. Personally, I think Guerilla Games would do a good job. Also, it would give them a chance to use all the unused Killzone stories they have lying around. That said, I think Sony will just cut their losses, shutter Bungle and have yet another dormant IP they never use again. Which is a shame.

              • This is what I think happens. Bungie closes, Sony keeps the Destiny IP and will eventually give that to another studio to make a game

                  • Sony could... I don't believe other than Bungie has experience with a live service game that Sony owns. Naughty dog maybe.

                    • probably lowest risk for Sony is to create a division within Bungie (their subsidiary) where they can assure the Bungie fanboys its still Bungie and hire excited new devs to work on it with some seasoned vets from a bunch of their studios that may not be exact fits there... (Bungie would not be able to interact with this division but they'll all be funded through the Bungie account) ...I could see a trend where Sony swaps properties amongst their studios calling it the next big creative industry thing.. ...But ultimately I think gaming is gonna need a reboot to independent smaller developers... bypass these publishers somehow.. to re-ignite the industry... these behemoths are not the way for this creative entertainment space.... as you need passion and not 9-5rs... thats art

I think the shift of focus to Marathon is mostly Sonys doing, Bungie has always stated they want multiple thriving ips, but Sony has already written off D2 And the failed TLOU game and the abomination that is Horizion:Fortnight prove none of their other studios can do any better than Bungie, And They won't take the chance of someone succeeding where they failed by selling it to an external studio I wish EA would sell Dragon Age to Larian, again they would make a good game and make a profit and make EAs devs look bad, not going to happen

                    • Sony didn't buy to build destiny up they bought to prevent anyone else from doing it. They don't want it competing with it's other brands and slowly sunsetting destiny into oblivion.
