Oh how I'd love to say the event is perfect now and have a closing to this sentiment, but I just can't yet. Haunted Altars is a great step in the right direction over Haunted Sectors, but there are just a few things that aren't perfect.
If you decide to analyze it and really look at it, you'll see that it is extremely cheaply made and very low effort. I genuinely applaud Bungie for at least making new mechanics and that the mechanics are actually fun, but the rest of the activity just misses the mark as a festive event activity.
What do I mean by that? The atmosphere misses the mark drastically. There are plenty of decorations, yes, and I wouldn't want it otherwise, but they didn't fix the lighting. I think I've seen 4 different skyboxes and 3 of them are broad daylight. They didn't add any music or even any dialogue either. They didn't do enough to properly differentiate the activity from normal Sorrow's Harbor.
Another thing they missed is that there isn't enough variety in the gameplay. Every single run is 100% the exact same aside from location of start. The first wave is always Taken, the second wave is always Hive, and the third wave is always (overtuned) Dread. The "bonus objective" is always just those purple crystals and the boss is always the exact same Headless One.
The biggest flaw of Haunted Sectors was that they were as stale and monotonous as you could possibly get. Haunted Altars, at the very least, has fixed the monotonous part, but I fear that once the newness of the activity fades, it's going to go stale very fast.
Overall, I feel the activity is a great foundation, but it only feels half-baked, and that's not even considering how buggy it is. There's not a strong enough festive spirit and there is no variety. The raw gameplay and mechanics are great though, thankfully! I can't state how important that part is. I feel that's the hardest part to get right; making it fun. Now that it's fun, it just needs enhanced flavor and something to keep it fresh.
We are so close to the FotL being "saved." Just put the activity back in the oven when the event is over and let it finish cooking by next year and I think we'll have something genuinely amazing.
