How important are Guitar solos?

In any genre, not just Blues related genres. Also, favorite song with a Guitar solo, and favorite one without one.

  • I don’t know a lot of songs with guitar solos, but every song I know that does have one I generally wish it wasn’t there.

  • They can serve a purpose or just be a reason to show off. One of my favorites is in John Mayer’s song gravity. There it feels like a nice break and it makes the song feel that much more relaxing. However in some songs it can go on for too long and feel a little overwhelming and just bad. It also depends on genre where a heavy metal song might have a lot of guitar solos because that’s the style, a hip hop song with one would probably feel out of place. This just my opinion and overall guitar solos are quite enjoyable

    • 1. Nottiham Lace by Buckethead 2. Some Kind of Monster
Genres that have prominent features of guitars should feature solos. Just look at St. Anger songs live! The albums don’t have solos, but the concert versions do!
• In comparison to other instrument solos? Idk. Otherwise important to the extent that it enhances/improves the song I’d guess.

        • It depends on the genre. Solos are a staple of rock and metal.

        • Solos are so important that they can shift the mood of the entire song. Many of the solos that Pink Floyd do are so powerful that you can feel the song even more than without the solos (Especially in their The Wall album). Solos can carry the weight of the whole song.

            • Depends on what genre of music we’re talking about. What’s more of an issue is that guitars have been pushed out of most contemporary music. Not for aesthetic reasons. But because they don’t fit into the way people want to record music these days.

            • Important-ish, some songs are just good enough without them Favorite is the Black Dog solo, very iconic and simple imo

            • I love all guitar solos, but my favorite riff is Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. Also, metal.

            • Very important. David Gilmour, Slash, Brian May... Where would music and the masses be without legends like these? Comfortably Numb I suspect.

In pop / R&B style music it doesn't really seem to be important at all. In rock, it's a staple that just needs to be part of the song because it is part of the DNA of it. It was present from the earliest blues / rock songs from the 50's, and it has remained a standard feature of most all rock songs since. I'm having trouble thinking of any that don't have any, for most all rock I listen to is from bands that have major guitarists in them. The solo adds all ranges of feelings and emotions - warmth, passion, joy, highs, lows, anger, despair, antagonism,... - just in what the song conveys, but in notes.

            • Guitar solos are very necessary because that’s part of what makes classic rock classic rock because they all have their own solos each different from the rest
licks finger
