You can progress. You just need to play something besides stories and old missions. You can play solo doing crucible, strikes, gambit, weekly planet thing(forgot what it’s called!). Just because most are a fire team thing, you can still join solo and do what you want to accomplish the goals. Nothing takes to much time so you can also do life’s more important things.

You still can’t play Trials or Raids without suffering through fireteam where people require you to be 1000 light, have completed 400 flawless raids, and they’re light level 850.

I’m just going off of his play activities. It’s very limited and doesn’t need to be high level. But he can do quick things to raise it up if he wants to.
