Do Leftist Policies Always Lead To Totalitarianism?

Poll question: Do you believe socialist policies, if pushed for long enough, will always lead the government towards totalitarianism (not authoritarianism)? If so, what do you think the driving force is behind this move towards tyranny and serfdom? 1) Yes 2) No 3) Your response

    • No. In actuality, a properly done socialist society goes entirely the opposite direction. As an example, look at something like the First Nations tribes. Mostly socialist in economic/social ideals, but also a fairly egalitarian society. The major issue undercutting recent attempts at socialist reform is simple. It entails trying to shift an unwilling populace.

      • Collectivism trends towards totalitarianism. Many ideologies that would fall under socialism do tend to be collectivist (though there are a couple exceptions). Once you start viewing the group as the basic unit of society rather than the individual, you value some sort of ultimate utility (or utilities) rather than subjective value. This removes the purpose of freedom of association and rights when ever they conflict with the ultimate utility. You can justify any action as long as you believe it will increase your ultimate utility, namely authoritarian policies. This doesn't apply to just socialism however. Other ideological areas this trend applies to include traditionalism and populism.

Extreme left or right wing ideologies will always become authoritarian.

          • Slippery slope is a logical fallacy. Also, why did you not make an actual poll?

              •
Do you believe socialist policies, if pushed for long enough, will always lead the government towards totalitarianism
Yes, I believe that they will lead the government towards totalitarianism. This isn't to be mistaken for believing that they will cause the state to become totalitarian. Socialist states usually collapse before it gets that bad, or they start liberalizing markets.
If so, what do you think the driving force is behind this move towards tyranny and serfdom?
Coercion. The more coercion that people are subject to, the less free they are. Pseudo-legitimized coercion is no exception. Socialism, like any state policy, is coercive.

              • No. If anything, the further right you go, the more likely you will see totalitarianism emerge. Examples of right wing ideas that align with totalitarianism: •Controlling reproduction of the population (either in hopes to increase or to decrease) •Targeting of specific religious or political populations •Development of a nationalist party
