New Light

Once players create a Destiny 2 Character, the New Light quest will begin. Some missions will require specific Character levels to participate, which may be increased by earning experience and increasing Power Level.
Through New Light quest steps, players will progress through the Destiny 2 locations and activities to earn experience and unlock destinations and new activities. Many Destiny 2 features are unlocked as quest steps are completed.

For information on how to play through New Light, please refer to this guide.

The Red War

All New Light players will have access to the Red War campaign, the base story campaign for Destiny 2.

Through Red War campaign missions, players will progress through the Destiny 2 story arc to earn experience. The Red War campaign is no longer required to be completed to progress to other Destiny 2 expansions. The Red War campaign may be visited at any time, but may only be played through once per character.

To obtain the quest for The Red War, players must visit Amanda Holliday in the Tower Hangar.

Destination Activities

As players progress through the New Light campaign, they will unlock Destinations that hold multiple activities. Some activities will require progression in the New Light campaign to unlock, while others will require specific Character Power Level in order to participate.

Adventures

Adventures may only be accessed by interacting with beacons within Destinations. Players may view Power Level requirements and rewards by hovering their cursor over the Adventure node in the Director. After all Adventures have been completed on a Destination, the Destination Vendor will offer up to four repayable Adventures per day.

Public Events

Public Events are available on each Destination once they have been unlocked in the Campaign. All players in a public space are eligible to participate in a Public Event and potentially earn rewards for their participation. At the Director level, players may see when Public Events are set to occur by hovering their cursor over the Event node. If they wish to invite other players within the Destination to participate, they may interact with an in-game Public Event Flag to set a waypoint for all to see.

Public Spaces

Once a player has unlocked a Destination, they will also unlock access to unique Vendors specific to that location.  Each vendor will offer specific Quests and Rewards. Additionally, players will unlock access to Social Spaces, such as The Tower, during the New Light quest. There are a variety of Vendors in the Social Spaces, as well as Vaults and Collections. For additional information, please see the  Destiny 2 Inventory Management Guide.

Other

Destinations hold a variety of other activities for players to engage with, each having specific character requirements, and granting Destination rewards.

Crucible

Once players have met Lord Shaxx, he will grant access to the Crucible. This activity consists of multiple playlists. For additional information, please see below:

Control

Control the zones. Every zone captured awards the team 1 point. Defeating opponents while controlling more zones awards the team more points. First team to 100 points wins.

Classic Mix

The Classic Mix playlist features a variety of Crucible modes.

The following Game Modes are found in the Classic Mix playlist in Destiny 2:

Clash: Defeat enemy guardians. Every opponent defeated awards the team 1 point. The first team to 75 points wins.
Control: Control the zones. Every zone captured awards the team 1 point. Defeating opponents while controlling more zones awards the team more points. First team to 100 points wins.
Supremacy: Capture enemy crests. A defeated Guardian will drop a crest. Picking up an enemy crest awards the team 1 point, and retrieving friendly crests denies the enemy team 1 point. The first team to 50 points wins.

Weekly 6v6 Rotator

The Weekly 6v6 Rotator playlist features a variety of Game Modes that can be played solo or with a fireteam. The mode changes each week at the weekly reset.

The following Game Modes are found in the Weekly 6v6 Rotator playlist in Destiny 2:

Clash: Defeat enemy guardians. Every opponent defeated awards the team 1 point. The first team to 75 points wins.
Team Scorched: A brand new Crucible mode for Shadowkeep! More info coming soon.
Supremacy: Capture enemy crests. A defeated Guardian will drop a crest. Picking up an enemy crest awards the team 1 point, and retrieving friendly crests denies the enemy team 1 point. The first team to 50 points wins.
Mayhem: The rules are similar to Clash, but Supers and abilities have an increased recharge rate, Power Ammo can be found more commonly, and respawn time is decreased.
Momentum Control: A brand new Crucible mode for Shadowkeep! More info coming soon.

Weekly 4v4 Rotator

The Weekly 4v4 Rotator playlist features a variety of Game Modes that can be played solo or with a fireteam. The mode changes each week at the weekly reset. These modes are different from the modes in the above Weekly 6v6 Rotator playlist.

The following Game Modes are found in the Weekly 4v4 Rotator playlist in Destiny 2:

Countdown: Plant the charge, or stop the enemy team. In this round-based playlist, teams will take turns between offense and defense. On offense, players need to plant the charge at one of two map locations and defend it until it detonates. On defense, players will need to stop the enemy team from planting the charge, or may defuse it if it has already been planted. Eliminating the enemy team can also win the round. Winning rounds awards the team 1 point. The first team to 6 points wins.
Showdown: Take out the enemy as many times as you can within the time limit to win each round, best 3 out of 5.
Lockdown: Both teams start with a “Progress” percentage of 0% displayed under the scoreboard. Once a team holds two zones, progress will begin ticking up for that team at a rate of 1% per second. There is no round timer—the first team to reach 100% will win the round, and the first to win three rounds will win the match.
Breakthrough: At the beginning of each round, players will fight to capture a central zone. Once the zone is captured, your team will deploy a Breaker. Once the Breaker is captured, it will be used to assault and hack the enemy team’s Vault. If you hack the enemy team’s Vault, you win the round. If you fail to hack the enemy team’s Vault within the round time limit, you lose.

Survival

In this 3v3 round-based Game Mode, players on a team share a pool of lives. Being defeated costs the team 1 life. Defeating an opponent costs their team 1 life. The last team with lives remaining wins the round and is awarded 1 point. The first team to 4 points wins the match.

Survival Freelance

The Freelance Survival playlist has a similar game mode to the above Survival playlist, but this playlist is specifically for solo players without a fireteam.

Strikes

While progressing through the New Light Campaign, players will unlock access to Strikes.
Strikes are a matchmaking enabled playlist that will form Fireteams of up to 3 players to complete objectives and defeat higher difficulty encounters within Destiny 2. Strikes will present challenges within the matchmade playlist, along with rewards at the end of each activity.
After completing the Strikes milestone, Nightfall Strikes will become available to the player. Nightfall Strikes may be completed once per week for high tier rewards. Nightfall Strikes are not matchmaking enabled.
