Clarification on hiding/restoring threads

Looking for some clarification. Recently in the #Community Forum, this thread was created. However, it was made aware by SILO 170 that this thread was hidden for him by default. Probably due to many other users hiding the thread because they see no importance in it. It's hidden by default to all users that aren't followers of the OP. Now, for me - since I follow the OP, the thread is not hidden but it shows a "+" as if it was. I was prompted with the message found here. I can't unignore threads that I haven't ignored in the first place. But I personally haven't hidden it, the community did. If this thread lasted a week and I didn't want to see it, I am unable to do so, unless I unfollow the OP. Am I understanding everything correctly?
