You wanted feedback? Alright you got it; Bungie.NEXT beta

YEAH FEEDBACK THREAD! Alright, here we are, nearly 8 year member here. I've been through a couple cycles of bungie.net changing it's life-form. Here are my initial thoughts. For the purpose of this thread, I will devise new changes I will comment on into three categories: (1) Love it, (2) Adjust it, (3) Scrap it. Lets start with the basics. The Front Page - Love it
The front page organizes content into "panels" which allows for easy visibility. I love the categories of "blog", "social" and "Community join up!". Since you made the switch to have a "main image" on the front page, it looks awesome.
White as Background - Love it?
I personally don't mind it. I know it's a huge change for us that frequent around here, but it's much easier to read. At night, I can see myself sometimes restraining, but then I'll just invert the colors. I'm indifferent about the white. If it's to stay or be changed back, it wouldn't matter much to me.

Profile Options - Adjust it
What has been done here ties into each pro and con category. I'm sure there are reasons we don't know beyond each one, here are my general thoughts.

Love it > Name Changing > Keeping "Halo" game avatars > Keeping "Banners" for profile customization > Multiple ways of "Signing in" > Privacy Options > Muting Users/Ignore Button

Adjust it > The way your "motto" is displayed. I was able to put a few links as outlets to other websites that I frequently use. You have VERY limited space in the amount you can put. Don't ever have "visible" signatures on the forums, but the "About Me" box in the previous bnet, was great. > Seeing a players gamertag. With multiple ways to sign in, is there a way to view someone's gamertag, unless it's hidden from their personal preference, by default? > Post History, what happened to it? I am currently not able to look at my previous posts and go back to them. Am I doing something wrong? >Ban/Warning History. Just like the last build, I feel that others enjoyed having this to keep track of how much time since their last infraction.

Forum/Thread Layout - Adjust it
I like the hashtag system. However, for the common user I feel this system is EXTREMELY CONFUSING. Yes, our genertion is turning into a filter one where we only want to see content we like, but there should be more obvious ways that users will understand. Here are my propositions:
Official Hastags should have forum banners.
Let me say that again. "Official tags" as deemed by the webteam from this page, should have forum banners so users know where "home" is. Right now there are no public banners. Users feel lost, unsure of where to find their content once they post it. If you have the banners like the Community Forum Banner or Flood Forum Banner, users will feel a home to where they prefer posting. Notice that this is only for "official" hashtags. Imagine the potential: -Bungie Day Banner -Bungie Christmas Banner -April Fool's Day Banner -Bungie Pentathlon Banner -Literally, anything you want as a banner, just post it as an "official" hashtag and make a banner for it. People will flock to it.
Threads should have ascending/descending sort option
I personally don't like the way threads are organized currently with the newest reply first. I read threads from top to bottom in chronological order, not back to front. Giving the option to users for either way, will give them preference, which is not a bad thing.
Where is my preview button!?
For making mega threads, such as this one and any other post, I always use this button! Bring it back, I'm sure it was missed by many!
Not a fan of "Infinite Scrolling"
I like pages. It gives conclusion to a page. It's easier to find where a user posts. Can you imagine finding a particular post in the FAQ on Member Titles/Bar Colors/etc with infinite scrolling?
User Identity - We need something
I understand from the front page that all the bells and whistles aren't currently implemented for the beta. But I would like to reiterate that there needs to be SOMETHING to distinguish users post. > Employees NEED to stand out. > Ninjas NEED to stand out. > For members, it's just a matter of clarity. Having titles bars in the previous version was great. If there is something in the works, awesome. It gives users a "conclusion" to each users post. > AVATARS NEED TO BE BIGGER; 90x90 was great. I'm not sure what they're running in now, there is a ton of unused space on thread pages. Just seems unnecessary. Going back to original avatar sizes would help.

*Quick things to note on:
Saved Threads - Adjust it What happened to my saved threads? Are they all deleted? I loved save threads! I want it back! Is the "like" function suppose to organize all your "liked" posts and serve in the same function? Posting Pictures/Embedded Videos - Love it Love these new additions. I also love the fact that there is a warning before you open the link. Don't want to see it? Don't click it. Simple "Share related topic" button - Scrap it Pointless. Aren't we trying to keep smaller threads with bigger threads? Repeat topics? I understand that a meta discussion could arise, but I feel this will get rare use. It will be a button I won't ever use. Hide Button - Love it Probably one of the best features implemented. I get instant gratification to eliminate a user's post and they aren't even notified. Awesome. Notifications - Love it I love the function and how it currently works. Clean and simple. Although occasionally it highlights up randomly and won't go off. Sign out/in and it fixes it. Posting Tags - Love it In the previous version I used a script that would allow these functions. Now that they're integrated into the new build, even better. Welcome to 2006! Follower/Following Users - Love it Maybe it's just me, but I like seeing what my friends are up to. It's completely customizable. If you don't care to see what folks are up too, don't use it. Hell, you even have the option to turn off your notifications for your convenience. "Edit Post Stamp" Cleaned up - Love it It was a pain from the last version to see that simple "edited post on X:X:XXXX etc, thank you for fixing this as Hylebos has pointed out. Much cleaner.
Please understand that this is my own personal reflection from using these forums and other forums over the years. Take everything with a grain of salt. Feel free to discuss any points that I have brought forward. Please note that this isn't my ENTIRE LIST of things to address. I will add more over time. I haven't even mentioned private group's yet.

  • Tags should be controlled, one thread can be in all forums (tags)

  • I agree a well thought out list that I can agree with. I really like the idea of the ending of infinite scrolling. though I also want the old system where newest threads and most popular threads shared the same page. Because now i dont seem to have an urge to post considering it willl just be buried at the bottom of the pile

  • Your points I agree with most are thread pages, user identity and forum banners. If these alone are looked at and changed, I'll die a happy man.

    • Couldn't agree more. I'd personally enjoy going back to the old, Oldest to Newest post style rather than this new structure that makes it look like twitter and reddit had a child. But i'll get used to it.

I absolutely agree with the official forum banners. I had the same idea, and I think it would be a great idea to keep those users in the "main" forums. I also think it would look better if the edges of the top story photo previews faded out on the front page. Meaning it would look like this rather than this. Lastly, I would like to see a "User Activity" tab on the Activity page. Currently, I can only see what users are doing through "All Activity." They get mixed in with all of the new topic alerts.

        • I agree with everything you've mentioned here. And as long as there is a way to make the background black (like a few users have done) I'm completely fine with the default white.

        • I agree with the bulk of that with a few slight changes 1. Background color needs to be darker 2. Chronological order needs to be for everyone, I think if converstations looked differnet to differnt people it would only add to the level of confusion at somepoint. 3. I dislike the limit of one picture that has to be at the top of a comment. It would be nice to reference multiple images throughout a lengthy text rather than have one that has to be at the top.

          • I agree with most things you have said. Things which I don't agree on are minor and I'm feeling too lazy to list them. It would be cool if Bungie took all your feedback and implemented it.

          • Great thread Spawn. Here's some I feel strongly about.
Name Changing
The name changing feature is fantastic. The only problem is that there are many impersonators. Aliases reveal the impersonators, but anybody could switch their name and avatar and look no different from a well known user at first glance.
Post History
Looking at someone's post history was very efficient before the update (minus clicking next page), now it's difficult to follow threads that I posted in a while ago.
Preview Button
This is a must have, it's a very quick way to check your spacing and formatting.
Hide Button - Love it Probably one of the best features implemented. I get instant gratification to eliminate a user's post and they aren't even notified. Awesome.
Absolutely agree. I feel like I'm controlling my own experience and it considerably helps out the Ninjas.
Follower/Following Users - Love it
When I click on "Activity", I'm instantly up to date with what all my friends are talking about and doing.

Nice thread Spawn! Agreed pretty much across the board. I would unfollow you just to follow you again! Now for more moar feedback from another Bnet Vet, myself. In addition too the OP: Groups
1. Groups are missing a bunch of old features including member roles, moderation tools, new/announcements stickies and FAQs. Are these going to make a return? 2. Members Lists and Followers of a group don't appear to be in any particular order. I think they should be listed Alphabetically like before and collapsed into tabs by letter. For example if I were to view me I would expand "E" and scroll down to ME. 3. Group Forum tags seem to be missing aside from the ones located in "Trending". For large groups this will certainly bring out the tag system better.
- Main Forum
1. The "Followed Tags" box in the left spacing of the forum only displays the first 10 tags I followed. There is ALOT of room there, I can has moar tags? On that note can we at least customize the tags that appear there? I actually had to unfollow and refollow tags in the order I wanted them to be which was a pain in the arse. 2. Also on tags I can't follow just any tag. I can only choose "official tags" and "popular tags". If I created a little signature tag that made all my threads unique like #cartman I could follow that tag to have my own forum homage to my own threads. So really there should be an "add tag" option at the top/bottom of the explore tags page. 3. Very simple suggestion, when scrolling through a loooong thread it takes time to scroll up. Can we have a [Top of Page] button?
That is all I have in addition to Spawn Like It/Love It/Scrap it theme (sounds like a game show). Anyways thank you webteam for the update and all the sweet new features. It is nice to have something to talk about again. :D

I concur with with everything you stated. While the WHite background does lighten things up, it hurts my tender eyes! And the more I fiddle with the site . . . it is so smooth . . . even the above edit was done so effortlessly. Well done Bungie.

Brilliant thread, bud. I agree with every single point! Bungie, please read and address this. If all of these were implemented the site would be near perfect. :-) Edit: The bit about official hashtags is the one improvement I'd like to see the most!

This pretty much sums up everything I think about Bungie.next The only thing that isn't mentioned is the removal of font options and named links and the like in conversations/PMs, which is something I've mentioned before that I'd like to see back. Maybe I missed conversations/PMs? If so, tell me and I'll re-read. Otherwise, great stuff.

              • I personally don't see what most people are so upset about. I haven't had a problem with "infinite scroll" so either i am unobservant or bungie fixed it before i joined, which shows how good they are at taking the users feedback and improving. I also do not mind the white on black layout. It is sleek and makes sense. I don't know what people would want other than a white background with black text, a black background with white text? that would hurt my eyes.

                • Notifications... I've noticed they're iffy too. Don't show up instantly, don't turn off... and the text there doesn't cover everything. Like, I must have had a hundred or two hundred people 'like' my thread over the course of yesterday. But every single time it just says '9 people liked your thingy' and pops up with that. It's so... odd.
