Discuss all things Destiny 2.

We canceled our preorder for Lightfall. Let me explain.

We, namely myself and my husband. Let me explain, because I want to express how much Destiny means to us, and why we’re frustrated with this game. Buckle up, it’s a long story (trust me, it’s relevant), but I’ll provide a tl;dr at the bottom if you can’t be bothered (I don’t blame you). I will not engage with insolent players. You are welcome to disagree as long as the discussion is respectful moving forward, this goes to our fellows who post here. Thank you! Disclaimer: Please think twice before commenting on this thread. You'll make yourself look silly if you make assumptions before reading at least my tl;dr, or reply with some nonsense that has nothing to do with the discussion at hand. The reason why I'm posting my frustrations here is because I have small hope that Bungie will see this, but I'm not holding my breath. They need to understand why their “loyal players” are wavering and dropping like flies. ———————————————————————— We preordered Destiny 1. I picked it up on September 9, 2014 at GameStop, making us day one players. We were so excited to see Bungie’s next biggest installment after Halo, that I beelined straight to the mall right after work, giddy with anticipation—like so many others. I’ll never forget how some people recognized the box in my bag, and saying how they were on their way to pick up their game, too. Employees expressed how excited they were to get their copy. I remember how the line was very long at GameStop. Got home, husband and I slapped in the disks, and waited for a wild ride we thought Destiny would be. At the end of the vanilla campaign, I remember my husband’s long silent deliberation as the credits started. We were vaguely listening to Paul McCartney’s dulcet tones. I asked what’s wrong, and he said, “….that’s it?” I told him that we still had the DLC’s to look forward to, since we preordered them. But my heart had sunk as well. The vanilla campaign was… off. Something about it made us both scratch our heads in confusion. “Destiny wasn’t supposed to be like this,” we both decided. The Dark Below dropped. It was so dismal that we considered quitting. The gameplay… y’all. We finished it in an hour BEFORE WE LEFT FOR WORK. We were excited enough to play it, BUT! We hadn’t expected an hour’s worth of gameplay and story. It left such a scar in our hearts that we wanted to quit, but I reminded my husband that we still had House of Wolves since we paid for that already. House of Wolves came a-howlin’ in. We reluctantly booted up the game, already jaded. Oh. Huh. It actually wasn’t half bad to start. The Fallen had always been an interesting enemy. It had some politics. Variks was cool, the first Eliksni “friend” we ever made. Prison of Elders was neat. The Queen was our boo. My husband and I agreed it wasn’t as bad as Dark Below, but… the campaign still felt short. We decided to give Destiny more of our time, so we preordered the next DLC. The Taken King sealed my adoration for Destiny as a whole. It was around this time that I started purchasing Destiny goodies. I have shirts, earrings, necklaces, a dope Hunter’s knife someone made on Etsy, and more plushies than I know what to do with. I was what you’d call a hardcore fan. Comic cons, I had to take all the pictures with the Caydes and high five the epic Destiny weirdos like me. My husband was still more jaded and guarded than I was. He said he was playing Destiny mostly for me. However, he admitted that he was starting to enjoy it. The raid was amazing, the campaign did extremely well. It exceeded our expectations. Probably because we had set the bar so low. Because of this, we decided to buy more expansions. Rise of Iron was my husband’s personal favorite. I liked it a lot, but I preferred Taken King. Not much to say—we thoroughly enjoyed it. My love for Destiny continued. For goodness’ sakes—I started making Destiny OC’s. Talks of Destiny 2 started to roll around. We were excited, to say the least. You better believe your pants that we preordered our copy. When September 6, 2017 came around, we were ecstatic. Vanilla Destiny 2 was really good. My husband and I were happy. History has a way of repeating itself. Curse of Osiris… not much to say, we played it and hated it. They did Osiris dirty and could have done better. We immediately had our guard up after having flashbacks of The Dark Below. Warmind. Ehh. We started, then we fizzled out. It was dull, and we couldn’t be bothered. We started to wonder if playing Destiny was worth it. We seriously considered quitting. Forsaken, though. Hoo boy, let me tell you. When we saw that trailer drop, we knew we had to play. The love for the game rekindled. The only complaint we had is that they spoiled Cayde’s death. Not cool. But we still played it. We loved it. Maybe I cried during Forsaken, maybe I didn’t. I’ll never tell. We didn’t play Shadowkeep. After Forsaken, life got in the way, and Shadowkeep just didn’t steal our attention from what was going on in our lives. I got pregnant with my first kiddo! We were the happiest we’ve ever been. As a result, we stopped playing D2 altogether. For some reason, my interest in gaming took a steep nosedive as I focused on nesting for baby-to-come. We didn’t come back to the game until we moved into a new house, and tentatively dipped a toe in. This was around when Beyond Light came out. I spoke with my husband, and his interest seemed to rekindle. “I miss Destiny,” he admitted wryly. So we bought it. I liked Beyond Light, but it wasn’t… my favorite. We got darkness powers, ooooo. This was also the first time we became part of a clan after we got serious with Destiny again. They were also kind and extremely forgiving because we weren’t always reliable players and popped off randomly (we had a newborn!). They were the ones who helped fill us in on what we’ve missed (not much, apparently). Destiny 2 was in a VERY good place. Witch Queen. It was so good. My husband and I completely forgot about that obvious “twist” at the end, so it had a huge impact on us. Easily the best DLC in a hot minute. We liked it a lot. We raved about it for days, unable to believe that we didn’t see such a painfully obvious thing coming. This is where my journey runs bleakest. Season of the BLUNDER. Bungie… what the hell happened? These last few Seasons were just so… bad. Mithrax and Eido’s daddy/daughter drama makes me roll my eyes so hard they’re about to go flyin’. Eido was supposed to be the sweet and charming “little sister” the Guardian wants to protect, but it felt incredibly forced. Eramis had no business shoehorning herself into the Season. The gameplay was lacking and boring. My husband and I got bored SEASONS ago. Needless to say, our disappointment exceeds our enjoyment. So anyway, we talked at length last night. My husband is DONE with Bungie jerking his time and investment around, and I couldn’t agree more. We stopped our preorder. That didn’t mean we wanted to quit. I will explain. We have decided to be cautious moving forward. We will play next season since we’ve already had money set aside and/or thrown at it. We’ve invested so much time and money into Destiny, that we WANT to continue playing, we WANT to see it to the end, but Bungie is making it hard to WANT to keep playing. Whether we play Lightfall or not remains to be seen. Frankly, I want to play it, truly I do. I still love Destiny. Or maybe it’s the idea of Destiny that I love. ———————————————————————— Rewriting this section to be more concise. I'd be happy to answer any questions and extrapolate on these points. The problems we have with Destiny 2 as it stands: 1. The writing needs to be better. The story was going good, but something is very wrong with how the lore is laid out these days. Are there different writers for each season/DLC? Are they communicating with each other? I have SEVERAL issues with the lore of the game. 2. The Eliksni Quarters was a joke. Enough said. 3. The gameplay used to be fun. I'm tired of the repetitive nature of the game. 4. The game has lost its heart and soul, but whether it had it at all is questionable. Look at Warframe. I feel like the developers love their game, but it does not feel like Bungie loves Destiny. 5. I feel like my time and money investment is disrespected. 6. The power fantasy is gravely lacking. That’s all I can think of right now, I’ll probably add more later. Thanks for reading. ———————————————————————— tl;dr: Disgruntled wife and husband played Destiny since the day it dropped on 9-9-14. Loyal fans/players until recently. Decided to stop our Lightfall preorder because we are tired of our time and investment being disrespected. Cautious moving forward and will tentatively look at Lightfall reviews first. We are not quitting yet. We are going to play next season because we bought the Witch Queen deluxe edition. We aren’t sure if we want to play Lightfall, but we aren’t wasting our time with the preorder benefits.

  • Hi, folks. Avelithe here. Apologies for necro-ing this thread, but I feel like it's important. I'm popping in to say that my husband and I still have not paid for Lightfall. We waited to see what the reviews will be, and so far they've been a little... ehh? It's one of those "You just don't know until you've tried" but it's not worth taking a gamble and shelling over a ton of money for something that might disappoint us. A lot of people are saying the story fell short, that it didn't quite meet expectations, but the gameplay felt fun. I'm glad. It's not enough for us to be like "ZOMG MUST BUY AAAA". We'll more than likely just sit this one out. It would take a lot of convincing to poke and prod two burnt out and jaded Destiny players to hop in on Lightfall. That being said, I'm eager to hear everyone's thoughts about Lightfall! Did you like it? Love it? Hate it? Think it was "okay"? Let me know in the comments!

    • The reason the game is in such a bad state right now, is that Bungie is using D2 (or the Eververse I should say) as a cash cow to fund other projects instead of reinjecting that profit into the game. I love the lore of this universe, but that's it. They have more than 1000 employees, yet release less (and less polished) content than teams of 30-50 employees do with other games. And it comes out buggy as hell, takes weeks to solve some of the most basic bugs, and the only content we get is cookie cutter seasons. We've had no QoL updates, they literally admitted at the showcase that they had no plan to even change the pinnacle grind, and no step has been taken to make the base content actually enjoyable and rewarding. I honestly don't care what new IPs they're gonna come with, they're gonna try to milk us in the same way with a gameplay loop that's not gonna go anywhere. I won't play those.

    • Canceling your pre-order was a smart move. The game is not being handled with a developer anymore. It's being handled by a business that has shown putting minimum effort into this game while making max profit is their goal. Destiny today is only around to fund their other projects.

      • Well written. Can empathize. Iike many of us, I also bought its expansion every year, and this is also the first time Ive canceled it. I bought lightfall expansion at the end of August. at $130 cad. and I canceled two weeks ago through Sony. No regrets either. Originally, this game can be played for free, so if it really gets better, it won't be too late to buy it then. The problem of Bungie n current statesof D2 has been talked about by many people, so it is actually meaningless to talk about it. And seems like they wont listen in the right direction regardless. ——————————— i didn't like Sunsetting very much, but in the end I just accepted it. Keep on nerfing and buffing weapons and armour, is not a big problem, but the real issue is Bungie has been keep changing the aiming cone and aim assist changes, and the effect on the muscle memory is very bad. just like airborne effective, its just bad. 90% of exotics are mostly useless. but in the other hand, Exotics used by too many people can lead to bungies nerfs. But these are actually not the most important to me. the worst is that I think this game is like being another job. also very FOMO. I was already very tired from real work, and I planned to use this to relax when I came back, but it seemed to be more tense and harder. both pvp and raid. (am not good in both, but i do want to enjoy the content of it at least) ——————————— in the meanwhile, I upgraded the ps membership to the ps plus extra, and it came into contact with a lot of time limited games. After leaving D2 for a while, I felt that it seemed to be very good, didnt regard taking my time off. I will keep my eyes on the next expansion towards D2, but i do feel like am already giving up on it.

          • I did the same. It was my first and only preorder ever. I figured that I was going to get it anyway… I can’t see a reason to continue to support this company or the lackluster content. Bungie takes the fan base for granted. If you’re not a so called “Content Creator” you mean Jack and -blam!- to them. I may pick it up if I hear good things, but not before it hits the bargain bin. Bungie does not deserve full price for half-assed content.

          • It's the bugs for me. Season after season it's clear they don't play test their game. And don't care to fix huge issues faster.

              • More players will have to follow your/husbands lead and demand more before purchasing in order for this franchise to get back on track. More original content creation/development needs to become a priority with Bungie and not simply reuse from D1 and hype as new. Quality of Life updates and Quality Control are two areas presently needing improvement as we’ve all witnessed a serious decline in both since the split from Activision. Charging more money and delivering less should not sit well with the majority of players. Like you said put your money where your mouth is. Speak with your wallet.

I almost gave up on Destiny too because of the pretty weak campaign. My brother quit and I've never been able to convince him to play it since. The thing that got me hooked is when I saw a video of how cheesy the Vex Mythoclast was. I just had to get that gun. Then I learned about Ice Breaker. A gun that had infinite ammo. The idea that you could actually do raids and get lucky enough to get a rare weapon. That was the hook of this game. The current game seems all about trying to get you to buy stuff. Buy this pass. Buy this armor set. Spend money. It's not fun. I don't care if you want to make some stuff behind a pay wall. Making me pay to have access to certain weapons feels wrong. Especially since they nerf the good weapons from the DLC I bought last year. This company prioritized making money. They never did that with a Halo game. Even with Reach. A DLC really felt optional. Those days are long gone.

                • A sad tale to read. What’s worse, perhaps, is that there is once again no comment from Bungie. Due to anxiety and depression I played a lot this season (1615 power level a lot and crafted all available weapons - time well spent, eh, hah!) but the thought of starting again next week or so, and having to re-grind all the DSC weapons I already grinded for seems…exhausting. And more resets expected of the same old playlists in order to get the best rolls of weapons that are intended to replace the weapons that took you hundreds of hours to gain in the first place… Goodness! Couple that with threads on this very forum relating to men’s mental health being locked for having “nothing to do with Destiny” despite the community being spammed by a very obvious, nothing-to-do-with-Destiny agenda, I’m about done, too. A sad state of affairs, but it’s only a game, and hopefully something the ‘sick of it’ individuals can move on from and find something more worthy of their investment.

I get what you say, I played from day one in 2014 and bought every expansion. Destiny was about all I played. I pre ordered Lightfall and a couple of weeks ago I cancelled it. I deleted three 1605 characters and my vault. Done. I too had paid for next season but after the state of this game, Bungie's identity politics and the attitude they have of some customers being more worthy than others, along with the attitude of Bungie in general, led to me walking away. I don't miss the game one bit to be honest, distance shows what a tedious chore it is and the recent "event" justifies my decision in my view. The only interest I have in the game now is watching Bungie's customer base implode, this game cannot keep current players or attract new ones and that is not a healthy state. If you're going to walk away then just do so right away. Playing another three months of a game you are not happy with is pointless. I have been playing Witcher 3, next gen update for that on Dec 14th, Red Dead 2 as well as both God of War games and Cuphead as well as a bit of Gran Turismo 7 and F1 22. These games sat unused because of Destiny 2 and its FOMO addictive style. Got a PS5 and boy, they look good. If people still enjoy the game then great, fill your boots because my view is each to their own. But if you are going to leave it behind just do it now, make the break and move on as there are so many games out there worth your time made by developers who care about their product. Why subject yourself to something that is not making you happy ?? .. Next season is part of the Deluxe Editon of WQ I bought, but me losing that money is far better than me wasting my time playing it when my heart is not in it.

                    • My wife and I also cancelled pre order for similar reasons. We are playing a different game now, but we'll wait and see if there is improvement before returning. It feels like Bungie was dating Sony, trying real hard to impress. Now that the marriage (purchase) has gone ahead, Bungie laid down and stop trying. There are lots of issues as everyone knows. For us it's class balance, and how (it feels to us) our favorite class (warlock) got dumped on. Nail in the coffin as they say. We aren't mad, we are just sad. We don't want to say goodbye.

                    • Destiny opporates on the MVP system or the Minimum Viable Product. They push out low effort content because it's easy to make/maintain and for the most part, people will play it regardless. It's the reason why we won't be getting any massive game changer expansions like Forsaken anymore and why we keep getting the same cookie cutter Hoard Mode Not Hoard mode 6 man seasonal activities every 4-5 months. Expect that with everything they put out because it's been that way since they left Activision. It'll save you disappoint. Which is why I just play to play and stopped really caring about what they do anymore.

                      • The story for anyone who sees the potential Destiny has but is being developed for the developers’s taste and not the community. Such a great game but handled very poorly. Bungie should be grateful the player-base has remained as loyal as they have but you cannot keep jading players for mediocre changes that do not let them enjoy the game. Thank you for being honest. Prayers for blessings and fun games for your present and future.

                          • I agree 99 percent with you, the seasonal model bungie has going right now is extremely stale and they are lacking creativity the only argument I have is that you can’t compare major expansion content with seasonal content, if you set the bar too high when an expansion drops of course you’re going to be disappointed in the subsequent seasons BUT I agree the lack of creativity and half baked content throughout most of the recent seasons due to this money hungry seasonal model is getting old or has gotten old for alot of players

                          • It just feels like the past 3 seasons have been written by an entirely new team, or they’re just lacking manpower or something is going on. I almost forgot how Risen and Haunted were super bare bones themselves, but they at least had the luxury of being released with a new Expansion/Brand new Dungeon/Raid/Open World etc. Plunder doesn’t have any of that, and it’s not that good of a season to begin with and has been the final straw for players. Now you’re finally seeing all the bottled up frustrations being let out, and rightfully so. (KF is great, but isn’t brand new and doesn’t have the same engagement as Vow did)*
