Quitter penalties in this atmosphere for PvP are still completely counter intuitive for retaining population.

-I understand the goal of quitter penalties is to encourage players to remain in games and play them to completion. -I understand the goal of SBMM is to secure the largest portion of the playerbase into a safer more fun experience in the Crucible and encourage them to engage with PvP. -I understand that weighting maps is to encourage players to step outside the meta and explore new options to stretch the sandbox out. However, the way these goals all play out at my level of matchmaking (which is an extreme case, yes, being on the very high end however: this is my experience and it is just as valid as anyone elses): - Map weighting does not allow exploration of off-meta options, it simply pushes people towards whatever is the least fun, most effective ways to play and at long ranges, to spawn camp from places you cannot defend from. - SBMM fills these games on maps nobody enjoys, at my level, with players -blam!- to ever explore off meta options and who are always playing at 100% intensity, often in fireteams with similar 1.8+ k/d's, often with clan names or Bungie names that are racist or misogynistic that have not gotten banned no matter how many times I report them, ensuring nobody has any fun and who often quit matches regardless when it's Disjunction - The quitter penalties therefore a) don't protect my lobbies anyway, b) keep me from leaving unfun games on unfun maps against unfun people and force me to sit around for 5 to 10 minutes getting farmed and bagged and c) when I do quit, and get suspended, like I am at this current moment, I am not encouraged to stay in my next game, I am encouraged to just not play. At all. PvP is my favorite activity and I currently hate it not because of the sandbox or the meta but because of all these extraneous factors that have taken my solo play experience and made it completely unplayable. This seems extremely counter-intuitive. I played 121 matches in freelance Trials this weekend and you know what? I had a blast. It was competitive, it was mostly fair, it was fun, I got some great gear for it. Now it's tuesday, freelance Trials is gone, and the casual Control playlist is somehow a hundred times more unforgiving and actively hostile to me, the solo player, than TRIALS OF OSIRIS. I'm happy that the middle range player is having a blast in Control now, I really am, but I am not a sacrificial lamb for that, I am worried about my own experience and my own experience frankly sucks a ton now more than it ever has. I don't want to play Mayhem, Clash is World Championship difficulty because it's where the sweats go to escape Control, Rumble is a unique sandbox that plays only like Rumble, Survival is a waste of time and Team Scorched quite frankly is dumb. I have no options to enjoy PvP like I used to anymore. The best part is I don't expect anyone to answer to explain why my experience has to suck, I just expect to throw this into the void and have to deal with it cause lately with PvP we don't get real answers, just more questions week after week. Sandbox feels great though.

  • You think having to play against your own skill makes you "a sacrificial lamb", but you'd rather other people be that lamb by being in unfair matches, so you can have it easy. Get a grip.

    • "Bungie names that are racist or misogynistic that have not gotten banned no matter how many times I report them" .....imagine being triggered by random players names on a video game. Your long winded, incoherent word salad was painful to read as is but add the no actual smart/reasonable fixes and voila! Dunce hat unlocked.

      • Perhaps your stats are exaggerated from too many games stomping noobs. I think a lot of “high end” players are discovering this right now, and they’re struggling because they haven’t had to play their own skill level for so many years they’ve got inflated stats. Dare I give the advice the average player has had to endure for years? No, because you seem nice enough. My advice? Let yourself get stomped until your stats are where they should be.

        • You suffer from a thing called "entitlement". You and other top% pvp players. You need a therapy, a rehab, looong lasting one. It's not your fault, it is 100% Bungie's fault cause they allowed it to happen in the 1st place and to last this long by introducing cbmm. You just got hooked on it, and now they took it away. Of course it sucks. It was so good getting 40+ kills a match destroying dudes who didn't even know how to make a build or read the radar. Adrenaline rush, power surge, frkn gaming cocaine! But fear not, endure and you will be cured. Do not succumb to it again. Be better...

        • Had a match yesterday where I started 0-5 against players clearly waaaaaay above my mediocre skill. I get playing against better players will over time make me better, but I'm not staying for that match temp ban or not. To your point, if I get timed out of PvP I just won't play it at all or play a different game entirely.

I understand your points made, but you being in the top% of pvp players means you are exceptionally good at pvp. As a 1.0kda player I dont see why I should ever match with you...I'd get stomped easily.

          • While you posted on a more civil manner than usual and it's commendable, you're still wrong. What you PVP main, top 10% kd player's do not seem to understand is that most people don't have the hours/experience you have. It's like expecting to be a NFL football player tackling and throwing 75 yard bombs against pee wee league. Most play for PvE first (it's basically an MMO) and PVP is a supplemental afterthought. Therefore, you should have to play those on your level and if that leads to you quitting, and getting a penalty, then live with it. It's been a long time coming and now you guys know what it's felt like for us "PVP casuals" for 8 years. Also, these changes could potentially bring ng players back into the fold that left bc of this nonsense. It won't destroy the player base, that just a confirmation bias. No disrespect man, just be realistic and fair.

Trials was fun for you because you were playing against people incapable of playing at your level. Control isn’t fun because everyone at your level is unwilling to actually play casually. Too many at your level are only having fun when they’re getting “we ran” medals every game with at least an 11.0 k/d, so they try for that every game, no matter the opponent. Trials was not “more fair”. That’s not the point of Trials. The point of Trials is the strongest players and teams get to the light house. The weak are fodder for the strong. It’s not trying to make fair matches. Best team in the world vs worst team in the world? Oh well. It’s where skill and hard work pay off. To be honest I’m not against a quitter penalty, but I don’t know if an outright ban is the way to go.

              • Eh... I don't think Quitter Penalty in Quickplay is a solution too. Not only because I disagree with the idea that players can't leave a Quickplay Maych, but also because they leave anyway or go AFK instead of play. But my greater concern is the fact that who gets kicked from a match for game error or a connection error is still banned even if it's not his/her fault, even if that player wasn't intetioned to leave the game at all. I hope Bungie will fix this point as soon as possible.

              • Join the same matchmaking system as Iron Banner, but Bungie doesn't understand PVP at all, so they don't care about the experience of PVP players. As for SBMM, anyone who has played COD knows how rubbish this thing is, and some people will deliberately lower their own KDA, then go to the low KDA matching pool and slaughter those rookies

                • Played multiple matches yesterday, had one match where a fireteam of two left. After that another left and after that another left. No one joined our team so it was a 2v6. Make quitter penalties longer and have it take away artifact levels temporarily.

                  • Wrong. What good is a bigger population if they just keep quitting? It's like having a boat with holes in it. It might not sink but it sure as hell ruins the experience for others. You're only thinking of yourself. Don't get me wrong I hate my teammates generally more than the enemy team. However quitting is not the solution. You queued up for the match of your own free will. You know more or less what's in store for you. Yet you decide midway you don't want to play any more? How selfish and childish is that? You're screwing over you teammates. Hell for me personally when the enemy quits it becomes boring because theirs no more resistance or a fair fight. We could be losing and than someone quits on the enemy team swinging it in our favor. That's no fun. I like competition from my opposition.

Quit complaining about Control. Bungie already changed the matchmaking parameters to deal with lag, and it's almost as bad as CBMM last season. I blame you and those like you for ruining Control games. A casual game mode should be enjoyable to the majority of players. If you don't like (extra-loose) SBMM, play Rumble, Trials, IB, or Clash.

I agree with this, I somehow have been having more fun playing Trials alone than queuing into Control. Even trying to play control with friends is unbearable with the connections I get put up against and the constant 3-4 man stacks that are playing like it’s for money.

                    • I’m actually both happy and sad to see someone in the forums experience the same thing I go through too. Control somehow became the world championship playlist and it’s somehow harder than the pinnacle pvp playlists like trials and iron banner. I don’t play control anymore because it’s seems more of a prison to me now, I wanna test out my new loadouts, I wanna finish my pvp catalyst quests and that is just not possible when everyone is rocking the meta load outs and when I’m going against my skill level continuously. Also, the amount of times i die behind walls and the amount of times I shot someone but the shot registers like a second after happens so frequently now it reminds me of year 1 and that terrifies me. And to top it off, when you add quitter penalties to it, feels like a prison to me. I barely play destiny anymore as the only thing that used to hook me into the game is the pvp, idk pvp is just fun to me in this game but the changes done for these past few months have been pushing me away. Even trials with its flawless pool, I was okay with it at first but idk there’s this bitter taste in my mouth from sbmm now. It feels like everything is going to become really casual oriented. I know that this opens up pvp for a lot of players but, the dedicated players that spend hours everyday playing pvp are being pushed away. I don’t want to play on 100% intensity each match, I wanna sometimes troll and mess around. I wanna go run some dumb loadouts like sweet business and etc but I can’t do that anymore. Secondly, it removes the incentive for any player to improve in the game. Why would a player improve and get better if he knows he’ll go against harder players, laggier matches, and that he’ll lose all his chances in completing his pvp quests in a rather fair and comfortable manner. It discourages improvement. And the lag, omg the shooting behind walls. It’s like the only thing i can’t stand and the frequency of it happening now is through the roof. Sbmm became more loose but I ain’t feeling any of that loose. All I see is the same 2+ kd players playing all the way from japan while i’m at the other side of the globe. Like bro what. Idk this is what I experience in PVP atm and every time I try voicing my opinion in the forums I get slammed with the “you don’t want to fight players in your skill level and your just a kd farmer. This isn’t fair etc etc” Bro, I spent years playing games to improve myself, isn’t it fair that for all that effort and time I put into games, to get a little results from my efforts? Other games reward you for being better by giving cosmetics and many more. Here in destiny there is nothing you benefit besides your matches becoming a little easier but that ain’t a thing anymore as it’s just a punishment. Let’s hope we don’t get slammed again for voicing our opinions.
