[Broccoli] Windows Update causing Destiny to crash to desktop: August 9, 2022—KB5016629 (OS Build 22000.856)

I originally posted this to /r/DestinyTechSupport but aside from a couple people reporting similar issues, I have had no luck in solving it. My only solution thus far has been rolling back the update. Just for background, I had never experienced a Broccoli error prior to this. I update my drivers, OS, and other system related software regularly, which allowed me to easily narrow down the catalyst for these errors. As the subject line says, a recent Windows Update [August 9, 2022—KB5016629 (OS Build 22000.856)] causes my Destiny 2 to crash to Desktop with a Broccoli error on average 2-3 minutes of loading into any map/tower/event/etc, though in several instances I made it as long as 20 minutes. No issues while in orbit. My first run-in with this issue was with this particular Windows Update's optional preview release. Destiny 2 started crashing after installing it. Did some research and didn't see much reported but Nvidia had released a Studio driver update with some fixes specifically for D2, so I installed that. No luck, crashes continued happening. I fired up the restore point created moments before the preview Windows Update was installed and Destiny 2 went back to running without crashing. The preview Update was optional, so I noted the Update's version, assuming Microsoft and/or Nvidia would make the appropriate fixes before the official release. Fast forward to August 9, and I see that the same Windows Update had been taken out of Preview and pushed live, which installed automatically on my system. While the hope was the issue was fixed, I booted up D2 and minutes later, I had crashed back to desktop with a broccoli error. Before rolling back I took the time to DDU my Nvidia drivers, doing a fresh install of the latest Studio Driver containing the Destiny 2 hotfixes. Did a fresh restart, confirmed drivers were installed, and booted up Destiny 2. Crashed minutes later. I fired up a half dozen other games, focusing on titles that would put load on my GPU, and they all continued to run normally. So without any additional recourse, I rolled back the Windows Update for the second time, and Destiny 2 is working fine again having had no issues with 15+ hours of in game time since. I read through the Windows Update notes but no clue what could be the cause, and I've disabled my Windows Updates for the time being until I am able to find more information on either a fix or a future release that addresses it. My PC specs, along with links to pastebins containing my DxDiag and Event Logs taken from the moment of one of the crashes, are below: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900K ~3.2GHz ROG Strix Z690-A Gaming Wifi D4 EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER G.Skill 32GB DDR4-3600 Windows 11 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 22000) Event Logs: https://pastebin.com/EgY3D8en DxDiag: https://pastebin.com/6Wkbz39y Please let me know if there is any additional information I can provide that would be helpful. Thanks!

  • Your issue is EXACTLY like mine and this recently started as well! I have even tried under clocking my GPU thinking it was just poor optimization (which I am sure is part of it) but all that did was extend the play time by like 10 mins before the inevitable broccoli. I will try this and report back findings. Thank you for posting!!! Specs below... Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz EVGA RTX 3070Ti FTW3 Ultra G.Skill 16GB DDR4-3600 Windows 11 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 22000.856)
