The Dead Walk

A rotting hand bursts from the snow and frozen earth as a fresh baked zombie emerges from its grave. Another rises nearby, followed by another as Nil lies upon a bench staring blankly at the starry sky. With a wave of her hand the zombies grab shovels and begin to exhume more corpses. The city has a few cemeteries, but this one sits on the outskirts far from prying eyes. Except for Balen's, leaning against a mausoleum wearing a longcoat and hat. "These rotters aren't too popular in town kid. I thought we were keeping a low profile?" "I'll strip the flesh and bag the bones, animate them when needed." All matter of factly, like discussing what to make for dinner. "That'd work I suppose," he grimaces and tips his hat lower, "We're awfully exposed out here." "I set up wards around the perimeter. If anyone enters without saying the magic words they'll be paralyzed and I'll be alerted. We're fine, Balen." "They had magic sunshine bullets to keep us from healing, what makes you think they haven't accounted for your other tricks?" "These tricks are new." "And yet," he gestures to four approaching figures. "They said the magic words." Nil rises from the bench to stand beside him and greet their guests. The first is a large Half Orc man dressed in blue jeans and a brown jacket, yellow eyes glaring at Nil from beneath a flat cap. He also has a small handgun in his big green hand, which is adorable. "Gorlok," nods Balen. "Balen," growls Gorlok. He's always growling. The next is a knight in dark plate and chainmail with bits of red cloth for flair. His black hair billows elegantly in the wind across his Elven face and bright blue eyes as he rests a gauntlet upon the pommel of his sword, obviously expecting a fight. "My Lady Volariden," Knight-Commander Salvador's words are as flowery as his perfume and he gives a deep bow. "Please don't do that Sal," Nil cringes and he winks. The last is a short Wood Elf with cropped hair a slightly darker shade of brown than her skin. She looks like she came from a skate park and seems totally bored, but her emerald eyes dart between the zombies and Nil. "Sup?" Winnow gives a mocking salute, "We couldn't've met in like a bar or something?" "Too many people," Autumn is also with the trio, smiling between Sal and a statue, but she's not real so she doesn't count. "Alright, elephant in the room, you're all pissed at me." Not the best opening statement Nil's given, "I'm not sure what I could say or do to convince you I'm no-" "Catch," Gorlok tosses a small gray ball and Nil instinctively catches it, then yelps and drops the metal object as it burns her hands. With a satisfied grunt Gorlok stows his weapon within his coat, them approaches to retrieve it, "The other thing was unaffected by cold-iron." "You banked a lot on me not wearing gloves in the dead of winter," Nil chuckles awkwardly, shaking her hands as the burns slowly fade. "Gloves restrict your fingers too much when casting." "Uncomfortable now, let's change the subject!" "You're a lot less saturday morning cartoon villain than I expected," Winnow's brows furrow, "All those old stories paint you cackling on a broomstick surrounded by bats." "That 'Witchsona' from the old days was an act. I was just the face, the conquering empire shtick was all them," Nil flails a hand to each of the other vampires, "They only dragged me out of my library to give speeches or make sure I was fed." There's a moment of silence before Winnow smirks, "So you were just the mascot?"

  • With a quiet drawn out moan, Nil melts down the side of the mausoleum and pools into a black puddle of cloth among the snow at its base. "The Drow," Balen to the rescue, "What do you know?" "They tried to kill us with Magic Sunshine Bullets," Nil adds from the snow. "They've been watching your tower for weeks," Gorloks eyes narrow, "As have I from below." "Why is everyone rhyming?" Winter groans. "You watched?" Now Balen growls. "I still think Balen is playing us," Melinoa towers over the Dwarf, "We should be wary." "Apologies, but we assumed Edgar had sent them to protect you from, well..." Sal trails off gesturing to Nil. "Balen always preferred to work behind those in power," Winter emerges from behind the knight, admiring his armor, "Sal seems sincere however." "Whatever!" Winnow cuts in, "We're all on the same side now, right Countess Chocula?" "I like her," Scylla chuckles from atop the mausoleum. "Eddie and the Aunties are coming for the city," Nil ignores the cacophony, "I kinda pissed them off too, sorry." "Fantastic," Gorlok sighs and pinches his brow, "This is why we kept you on a short leash-" A vase from a nearby statue falls and everyone turns to the sound of shattering porcelain where Autumn stands, smiling beneath her hat. "Oops." "Just the wind," Gorlok lowers his weapon and turns back, raising a brow to Nil who has somehow turned a lighter shade of snow white pale, "What do you see?" "Spirits," Nil whispers, eyes falling to the snow as the others return to their discussion. "Who is this?" Ann asks of Winnow, who sounds so far away. "We'll look into the Drow, you focus on-" "One of those taken off the streets by Gorlok," Melinoa points to the creature on the wall above Nil, "That one had him turn them with vampiric alchemy to act as fodder." "-been raiding military bases an-" "She and a few dozen others," Scylla now, "While we attacked the city they were set loose within, bloodstarved and mad. Most didn't survive." "Miss Volariden? What are you-" "Little wonder why they hate us," Ann sighs, turning to Nil with disgust, and the creature hisses. "Annie! Wake up damn it!" Attention returning to the meeting, Nil looks up from the patch of snow she'd been blankly staring at for the past few minutes. Sal, Gorlok, and Winnow stand with their backs to her and weapons drawn while Balen kneels beside her. Beyond them a wall of flesh and bone, the risen dead shoulder to shoulder, surrounding them and shambling closer. "Sorry, lost focus," Nil waves her hand and the undead begin shambling into the mausoleum. Bright flashes of violet light pulse from below as they enter a teleportation circle she'd prepared in advance to transport the small horde, and after the last has past the trio lower their guard. "So she always been this crazy?" Winnow nervously breaks the silence. "I thought so," Nil responds, staring straight at Autumn, whom no one else can see, "but now I'm not so sure." "I'll call if I dig up anything on the Drow, Balen," Gorlok growls once more before turning to leave. "Mine'll keep their eyes and ears open on the streets," and with another mock salute Winnow follows the old Half Orc. A moment passes before Sal finally speaks, "If it isn't too much trouble, Lord Balen, would you be willing to host my men within your tower? In exchange for our protection of course." "Return with us and we'll iron out the details," Balen gives Nil a look and she waves him on, then the pair disappear within the structure. Alone once more, Nil goes about collecting her wards, ignoring the specters haunting her. Then returning to the mausoleum she begins dismantling the final string of enchanted bones. But something is amiss. All fell silent as she passed the threshold. Then she hears the increasing sound of flying insects, buzzing louder until it's deafening. Peaking around the corner she sees her reflections, mouths agape, forms faint and rotting as they float above the snow and stare wide eyed and blank. Plucking the final string the silence returns and the spirits are gone. Nil pockets the bones and produces a small sack of powder, then tosses a pinch as she steps into the circle and vanishes. As the powder falls to the ground the circle flickers and fades, and the mausoleum is dark once more.

    • Somehow I must have missed this, which is unfortunate. For I like it a lot, especially the silly jokes mixed into it. All the magic sunshine bullets, countess chocula, and the Saturday morning cartoon villain personas. Witch leads to a interesting idea of the whole Witch Queen think being more of an act for dramatics. An idea witch I find really cool, after all I am always one to like some magical drama.

    • Heheh, Countess Chocula. That was funny. :p Very nice! The dialogue all flowed very well, and held just the right amount of seriousness, and little silly phrases like "magic sunshine bullets" that made them all sound like real people. The only possible complaint I could see is that you're introducing a lot of characters at once, but honestly that's not really even a problem as long as they're not always "on screen" at once. You did a nifty enough job making them distinct, too. I still love the various aspects of Nil just hanging around, too. Magnifique!

        • Very enjoyable, just one thing that stood out to me.
"I'll strip the flesh and bag the bones, animate them when needed." All matter of factly, like discussing what to make for dinner.
The 'all matter of factly' part sounds... off. It might be something with the mood, or just the way it was written, but I think some change could be made to make it sounds better. Other than that the story itself sounded great, and Nil's reactions/actions had a sort of silly mood to them, which helps her be insane, and makes it feel more real. It seems like something who was dealing with this level of madness would see things as and act like. Good job.
