Why Does The Connection So Often Change Mid-Match in Crucible in Destiny 2?

Often, one player leaves (and someone else joins) the crucible match and the connection suddenly changes. After that moment the gamplay changes. Bullets suddenly don't do the same damage....... or the opposite. The same on my own fireteam: If one person is on my team, I can't make a kill. When that person leaves, I'm suddenly MVP every match. I think that this shouldn't be happening in a 2022 A+ game.

  • I had wondered this. I thought it was just me being bad. Just lost a game. 150 to about 100 when we were up about 80-40. Someone quit on their team and all of a sudden they couldn’t miss. Have noticed that all weekend.

    • Yep, this situation has been happening for the last several months. You know something is up when Lorentz shots aren't registering like they were at the beginning of the match.

Happens all the time and I was wondering if my characters have a shadow ban or something that I keep getting handicapped every time. Most annoying s the glory matchmaking when finally you got good teammates you lead them suddenly one of them gets booted. Same with the 'breaking up teams' just to put you back with the same players.

        • Yeah I’ve popped off, then suddenly mid game something switches and I can’t hit shots properly and radar pings don’t exist. Enemy movement just turns super saiyin. Happens regularly.

          • Watch battle nonsense destiny 2 on YouTube, there's 2-3 videos. He's a network engineer, explains everything. You connect to all players individually, so the guy joining may have an iffy connection you.

              • My favorite is when I'll be on a ten streak, then client changes or someone backs out, then I'll not be able to get a kill for literally 2-3 minutes. Suddenly 1-2 minutes left in match I'll be unstoppable again. PvP in this game is literally RNG.

                • Yeah…The match changing and bullet ghosting has been a thing since I started playing D2 like 3 years ago. My theory is that they have the players with the slowest internet speeds hosting at the beginning of a match and end with the fastest maybe. I don’t know how their peer to peer connecting works, but I rarely start hitting long sniper shots until about 3 minutes into a 6v6 match. It’s usually not as bad in 3v3 for me, but that’s probably because it’s more rare to run into someone with slow internet playing a competitive mode. I’m kinda guessing on everything, but my observations point to either bad connections or Activision coding still in the game that evens matches by messing with bullet registration. I think Activision patented a couple things for that while they were still partnered on D2.

                • peer-to-peer connections with rotating hosts is what causes it.

Spaghetti network code and p2p connections. Doesn’t help that the game was made with 4v4 in mind before switching to 6v6.

Because there are no dedicated servers, and the internet has an interesting sense of humor.

                  • I hate this also. So many times you can instantly tell the connection to the lobby is garbage. I think a downgrade to double A studio is in order. Given the crappy server situation. And the countless dollars we all spend on this game.

                    • bungie would rather blame you or point you to their UNhelpful topics which goes in more detail about how its your connection and nothing to do with bungie. follow all the guide lines, wired connection blah blah blah. the pvp side of this game is a joke. cross play destroyed any fun i had with pvp.

                      • It's because people play on wifi with 600kbps up and down with their issues equipments and 10 people all on it. Along with bungie rewards you for having terrible internet.

I'm under the impression it happens every few minutes in PvP and at times can be very noticeable with things like examples you provided.

                          •
Destiny is not like other games Bungie uses peer-to-peer (p2p) networking. Which unlike most other games part of the game runs on your console or pc. So the game needs a very stable connection. So a member of your fireteam may have a bad connection so this ruins it for all of you. Being wif-fi or having a wired connection does not mean you have a good connection But being wired is a more stable connection and causes fewer issues.
• Noticed it too. Can be another side effect of cross play changes. This season is beyond pathetic.
