One of my favorite things to do with vampires is just to trace the bloodlines. This sounds like a silly thing, but I love just looking back, and seeing how the original vampire, became the however many elder clans, and how they then interacted, and grew, and whatnot. To that end, I thought this was a fun read--hearing how the original clans came about, and whatnot. A few of the lines felt a little out of place at first, but once you reach the end and find it's not all happy campfire stories, and is in fact an execution fixes that problem. Pretty clever twist there. I thought that was rather nifty. I think adding a sort of a "this is the good they've done for the queen" would've added both some clever foreshadowing to the twist, and made her telling the story a bit more believable. It did seem a little odd how she was telling all of this to the Queen who already knew it all (though, it seems that was the Queen's intention). The one thing that did kind of bug me a little bit, though, was how many times it interrupted the story for a minor detail about the surroundings. Some of them were good, like the sun rising, and revealing that the people around the campfire were all members of the vampire clans, but it happened just a tad too frequently. All in all though, very good! I liked it! Every time I try to write a vampire story, I wind up always kinda wanting to boil down to doing this; just making a bunch of vampire clans and plainly summing up their history. I find this stuff super nifty!

  • She wasn't there when Magpie started, she just appeared before her, I didn't really emphasize that well enough me thinks. As for interrupting the story, honestly I did that cuz I felt like it'd just be a Lore dump and nothing else otherwise lol

  • Ah, I can see what you were going for now. I definitely didn't get that impression the first time, though. As for the interruptions, well, I'm a bit biased; as I said, I don't mind exposition, and I love vampire clan backstories, but I don't feel like it would have been a bad thing to just focus on the story. Or, if you do want to interrupt it, interrupt it with stuff that's meaningful; like, when it was interrupted to describe the various vampire clans was fine, but when it was interrupted just to say she was smiling it felt a little pointless. When I have characters essentially give a big exposition dump, I usually have other characters poke in with their own comments on the story. A bit harder to do when it's around a campfire, where interrupting the story isn't as common, especially since the Queen (the main person who might) seems to already know all this. Though, that could be solved by what I said previously, by having Maggie try to explain why the clans were beneficial to the Queen, to try and get her to not murderize them all. Which you did do near the end, but spreading that throughout would probably solve both problems, I think.

  • Huh, to be honest I thought I'd removed that smile line... As I said elsewhere, I haven't really written anything in awhile and I wrote this in two hours with no editing! I didn't want to spend a week obsessing over it so I just moved on to the next. I also finished another after and I think it's a bit better, just had to get back into the groove of things. I'm going to give it a once over, and only one once over, and then start the third which I'm most excited to get to.

  • And honestly, learning to not obsess over each individual piece is a good thing to get in the habit of anyway. Editing is best done all at once at the end. Whether to edit a one off piece really just depends on why you’re writing it; if it’s to practice a certain skill then editing might be a good thing, but just for getting back in the groove? Yeah, probably best not to focus on it too much. I’m looking forwards to the other two!

  • Pretty satisfied with the second but I'm gonna wait a few days at least before posting it Also debating doing some RP events between stories, but idk. I have some ideas but the state of Offtopic and the stress and anxiety of hosting said events are off putting.

  • We’ve still got a few good RPers around. Not nearly as many as we used to, but there’s a few. I know a decent amount of old faces popped in for Blaze’s RP, so they’d probably do the same for you, if they recognize you. Some of the newbies ain’t that bad, either. And by some I mean, like, one. As for the stress, though, not sure if that’s gonna be any lighter. Though, most of the RPers around don’t seem to mind taking their time.
