Public events have become pointless.

Hello all. Is it me or have public events lost all purpose? Here is the thing. They are a community thing meant to be shared for anyone who wants to take part. Myself I thoroughly enjoy them, or shall I say I did when I was lower light level. One point is if you are a lower light level public events can remain fun which is great for new players. On the other hand if you consider how easy the base light level grind is then they're only fun for so long. Secondly higher light level players that come along can easily finish one of these 'boss fights' with one super. This kind of takes a hell of a lot from the little guys. Now in the case of a higher light level player like myself I still like to do them. Especially on the Tangled Shore as I collect ghost fragments for wanted bounties. Anyway if I am slowly chipping away at a public event so as to trigger a heroic public event, all it takes is one other player to come along and just beam the boss and then I miss out. The issue with long term players is they look at a public event as a quick 5 second chest. Pop a super, get a chest. It is literally that easy. Now as a new player I can only assume a lot of these guys dont even know how to trigger heroic public events. Another downfall from being able to shoot them down so easy. Overall I feel there is some major work to be done regarding public events. Even if not priority. Personally I wouldnt mind if there was more to them, even if you just increase the hp of the bosses themselves. Ideally though I think they should be a lot harder. Because theres no real limit to how many can do one we have the potential to really dive in and make it a 'public' effort. If you can solo a current public event then why ever bother doing it with others haha? You only take part for fun or for the loot. Any more than two guardians and you just know it's not going heroic so you may as well do it alone and have fun doing it. In addition the fact a single guardian can solo heroic is a bit silly. I would advise introducing legendary public events, but if we cant even trigger heroics due to bosses getting one shot then we sure as hell wont trigger a legendary. I think what I'm saying is it's a public event. Theres not much public to it at the moment.

  • You want pointless? You need to play some Vanguard Strikes. The rando’s in there are awful. I quit after a day of strikes and went to Public Events. More drops, more legendaries. I’m fleshing out all my random gun triumphs. Better choice between the two. BTW: I’m just getting to my soft cap. After that I might do more powerful drops or just want til next season.

  • Short question: does everything on a patrol needs to be complex? The events served a purpose back then and still serve one. They are good for racking up XP, blue gear and legendary gear for scrapping (and getting weapon rolls from Banshee), Clan XP, charge grind for the seasonal items like the Hammer and so on. They also bring people during patrols together, to bring a bit more immersion to the shared world design of Destiny during patrols You can do all of them solo for heroic, they are quick, refill your supers etc Not everything needs to be in some sort of endgame state. There are always people who haven't played the game/franchise for 7 years or more, therefore an easy activity is needed, even if it is just a patrol event.

        I did a D1 public event yesterday and it was more rewarding than D2 because it actually gave me legendaries for completing it to the best of my ability. That’s a huge difference compared to D2 where you get more planetary resources and blues for completing it on heroic, regardless of level.

        • The only reasons I run them are for the XP needed for the Clan XP Pinnacle and for the waves of enemies to complete daily and weekly bounties. Most are solo-able even Heroic with the right loadout but the rewards have always been lacking. D1 events were way more rewarding

          • Back in vanilla d2 public events had a small chance to get an exotic engram. Ppl farmed them all the time. Then some douche tubers said it was too easy to get them and that they should be harder to get so they were taken out of public events.

            • Most of the game is pretty pointless, except bounties or quests. PVP for instance you get very little glimmer or seasonal xp from completing matches. But yeah it would be nice to have a "destination" rank-up system, where you could earn some upgrade materials or something from public events. Even getting a decent chunk of glimmer would be nice IMO. We went from getting exotic to a single blue.

            • Guess I'm one of the odd ducks, but I still find them somewhat useful. I run them for the Clan XP, good source for ether (Splicer gauntlet), and weapon bounties.

              • you can only do the same thing for three years in a row so many times without it becoming monotonous. even when they change it up with seasonal public event they become pretty repetitive.

              • Recently I've been hanging out in the Dreaming City after not being there in ages, and I've re-discovered how much I like the Rift Generator public event. Been joining in just for fun. It feels special, like you and your rando blueberries are doing a secret mission or something when you're all warped into the Ascendant Realm. I wonder what the other roaming blueberries see if they're not in range of participating when the group gets teleported away, and when we're brought back.

              • I just dont do them. Never have unless theres been a quest that requires some. I just use the events to grab a flag to go do other shit

                • I wish our ghost would give us a hint or a "hey, what's that" to clue us in on how to go heroic. The only public events that I do are in the Tangled Shore for ghost fragments. Heroic events give 2 fragments while the base event gives 1. All too often I see players just focus on the boss and make absolutely no effort to make the event go heroic. Same for events on every other location in the game. There's no indicators for what to do and new players just think to take the boss out asap.

                  • They've always been pointless, even back in d1. In d2 y1 they used to drop exotics, and legendaries pretty frequently but people complained they didn't want "handouts"
