Stop blaming all server problems on the players!

I have high speed internet and my PS4 is receiving a signal between 55-80, which is pretty darn good for a PS 4. Too often my game play slows down so I can’t get something from the vault or switch weapons and I keep hearing it is my problem. I don’t think so. I worked and paid to up my WiFi speeds and I still have problems too often. Significantly, these problems do not occur in other games I play on line. Maybe Destiny needs to take more responsibility for the quality of play for ALL to players, not just those living in high density areas and those getting paid to play. My views but developed over time.

  • Internet speed has little to do with actual connection quality.

    • It’s largely due to the outdated P2P system. This is largely outclassed by modern servers. Basically, every instance is located off of one person’s console and the rest of the consoles are networked together to share the load of the other non-specific interactions. Basically, every console in an instance shares a portion of the non-character interactions like audio, skybox, particle effects, ect. Beyond this, every link you’re connected to that has bad internet causes some sort of lag for everyone in the lobby, be it small things like stuttering particle effects or kicking the entire group to orbit due to a disconnect. This is largely due to the ratio of players with bad internet or systems in a session to the total number of players there. Bad connection issues could be not due to your internet but the internet of the people in your sessions especially for something like disconnects. Bungie does a lot of this geographically (though with some hilarious exceptions) so blame the people in your area for poor connectivity. It could also just be you as a large portion of matchmaking is connectivity based (especially the tower). A dedicated server would solve a number of issues P2P causes and would alleviate a lot of stress this game puts on older consoles. It very well could be you or it could just be the people you’re stuck with in lobbies due to your less populous location. Just my basic understanding. I’m sure there are people better versed in this than me, but these are my two cents. Hope this helps somewhat

      • Bungie does not care people have complained about connection issues forever. They won't boot People from the server for bad connection unless a large amount of people complain. The lag has been so bad for 2 days that sniping has been impossible for me, because whether I aim on the nose headshots nor chest for a body shot rarely registers. Multiple people will stop taking damage or reduce damage and only have 2 or 3 resistance. Bungo could fixes this but they won't and when cross play becomes full integrated the game will be even worse. My own opinion is bungie would like to let destiny burn so the can move on but the just don't have enough streams of income to just abandon this cash cow. And for reference my inter connection is Dl 962.37 Mbps Ul 86.30 Latency 37 0% packet loss.

      • Well when 95% of the time the IS with the players connection, them letting you know is correct. You should fix the problem yourself.

        • Yeah, people keep trying to talk tech like the problem is that you just don't understand. Yes, destiny is not quite run purely peer 2 peer, but the system they do use is still old, it still requires the player's (or some player's) Internet to do the work. Still runs into problems when the players connection is not fully up to scratch. Whether it's their fault or not. So it doesn't really matter what system is in use, what matters is that it needs updating. ANY improvement will be appreciated throughout the playerbase no? Surely a newer system will be better than the old one? Last time I mentioned it I got snarky comments but I look at it this way : I've wired my connection. I'm constantly running tests and troubleshooting. I've phoned around and gotten the fastest, best Internet available in my area. I've checked my Nat type and followed the bungie guide etc I try to play at off peak times. Every time I play I turn my phone off, my laptop off, my TV off. I double checked the Internet providers and ensured that I do have the best possible Internet in my area and address. I'm literally doing everything I can. So can bungie say the same? ...........
All people are asking is that they at least update, like to a similar level as other games. It would be helpful especially for those who are struggling with money or in a difficult situation /location - y'know, be inclusive?
• Bungie has made it a habit to incorporate blaming the user into just about every aspect of their application/network UI. Simply put, it's always the other guys fault. Always.

            • I love the “oops, you left a Gambit match early”. I didn’t “leave” shit. I got dropped by their crap servers and then victim blamed by their automated message system. Thanks Bungie. Feels great.

Just a PSA: Unless you know your connection is bad, and you really want it to improve, don’t bother opening/forwarding ports or fiddling with NAT Type 2 or less. Bungie ‘s troubleshooting page has improved over the years, including them now warning people about the dangers of opening ports. However, they don’t make it clear that doing those things when you have a great connection (with decent jitter/latency), won’t improve things when you encounter people not taking damage or seeming to kill you with one or two bullets from an AR etc. Modern WiFi is not that bad anymore even when multiple people connect. If your setup is outdated, or you’re ISP is still on copperwire, then sure, you have to plug in. But don’t endanger your family running a cable through your living room. Not for this game, especially if you have fiber. Again, Bungie’s troubleshooting is for people who have trouble connecting to the game in general and/or communicating with others, or for households with multiple people playing D2 together. Edit: I should clarify that Bungie’s troubleshooting page is not intentionally misleading. If you look at it as a whole, the guide is clearly addressing errors you, the user, are receiving. The issue is that over time Bungie’s SEO has also vastly improved (e.g. a lot of mentions). That means the specific troubleshooting page ranks very highly on Google, and it’s very easy for someone searching for help to land there…out of context, which I hear a lot from people I’ve played with. That is all.

                  • While I do agree with you in terms of it being Bungie's issue a lot of the time, you should try to connecting your console with an ethernet cable instead of wifi. Wifi stability can cause packet loss and other data transfer issues.

                    • Peer to peer servers have been outdated for almost a decade but bungie refuses to acknowledge that it ruins the experience of the game.

                      • Bungie needs actual servers and yes take responsibility for there game not working cause of peer to peer connection where someone’s internet plays host to the game. Oh trust me give it all of five seconds and I’ll have someone spout some nonesence of something they don’t know cause they didn’t play destiny 1 dealing with the same issues. An those that did play destiny 1 still doesn’t get it. Cause here’s my example. Destiny 1 close to the end and destiny 2 coming out. E and my friends wanted to play Crotas end the way bungie designed it with all of its flaws since they went back and patched a lot of work arounds and exploits. We play all the way to the point of getting to crota. We take all of five mins to take a break go to the bathroom, get a snack, get a drink, rest our hands come back and we chat a bit get our strategy set which is just the normal bs just no mistakes. We kick it off and everything is going well. Mind you this is about an hour or so into the raid cause we messed up a few times on the other parts when the game lags and enemies teleport every from where they should be or spawn in from. Everything is going fine and half way through during the first damage phase I get disconnected. Which means I got disconnected from the game, from PlayStation services, everything. An guess what my internet was just fine my grandmother still had the internet going on her phone and it was still working on my laptop. I had to completely shut down my PlayStation turn it back on to get everything working again. Jump back into chat and they ask me what the happens. I told them the bs error code before I shut down the game and my PlayStation. They said well we failed anyways just jump back in. I told them nah with the game doing that here’s no point cause I know it will happen again. Oh yea if you didn’t figure it out. They were still playing and I’m the only one who got kicked from destiny “servers” with the error code blaming me. Umm why in an hour and a half did the game for some reason kick me but not my friends. One friend lived on the west coast. One friend lives in middle America somewhere. The other two were on the east coast. An one was in England somewhere. Which obviously I’m not going to say where I was. But we were evenly spread out where the peer to peer connects should have zero problems feeding off of our internet. So anyways I told them I’m going to bed finish without me. Luckily they didn’t and the next day we did it with zero mistakes and bs from bungie. They need dedicated/regional servers along with bungies internet being the damn host to the game where everyone connects to them and bungie take responsibility for the game when something goes wrong. Every error code for the game blames the players internet for not being able to connect to the servers. They don’t have servers to begin with how can they connect to a sever when they don’t have one.

                        • The most insulting thing is when the servers misbehave, and you get disconnected, but get the message on screen saying for you to "check your internet connection."
