Heath, Weary Guardian - A Serious D2 Short Story

Heath, Weary Guardian – A Serious D2 Short Story
Goodbye: A concluding remark in parting; farewell. -Unknown
“Ow,” I seethe as a rock cuts into my hand—not for the first time. These were sharper than any I had ever come across. It wasn’t pleasant. “Are we there yet?” Kaira whines. “We’ve been walking for DAYS.” “I’ve been walking, you’ve been in your own little universe, where I can’t see you.” “It still feels like walking.” “Maybe something to relate to would cheer you up?” “Worth a shot.” I smiled in my exhaustion. “There was once a great author who wrote a series of books. They followed a young man who bore a great object of power and temptation. A wizard tells him that the object is the only life source keeping the dark lord of the land alive. So the young man, the wizard, and seven others venture to the realm of darkness to destroy the object and the dark lord.” “Sounds boring.” “In the end, the young man nearly dies destroying the object. Wars were fought and thousands died. But the journey took little over an entire year.” “A YEAR?!” My smile widens. “Yes. Many times the young man thought of turning back, but he never did. Keep that in mind, Kaira.” “Why? Was this because I was complaining?” My smile fades. “Yes. And no. We’re here.” I point ahead of us, at the massive black tower that loomed overhead. “The Last Sanctum.” “It’s…black.” “Kaira. Remember how I never wavered from my course.” “What are you saying?” “I have a feeling I’m going to die my final death in there.” “…sir. The Blackguards…” “Meaningless in the scheme of things. At long last, I know why I dreamed what I did fifty years ago. It was leading to here, this whole time.” “All this to get the [REDACTED]?” “Yes. Sadly. Don’t come with me. Find Loura. Tell her all the things I never could. You don’t need to die, too.” With much hesitation, Kaira appears and looks at me with sadness and disbelief. “This shouldn’t—can’t be the end.” I smile, mirroring her sadness and place a comforting hand on her shell. “I’m afraid so. Goodbye, little Light.” I turn away and begin to advance. Several paces later I look back, and Kaira is gone. I blink the tears out of my eyes. “I will not be in vain,” I tell myself. As I approach the massive black doors, they open and give way to hundreds of Hive soldiers. They screech with rage. I sigh resolutely, and reach for my Light, a staff of lighting expanding in my hand. Thunder claps across the sky. -Before the [REDACTED] of [REDACTED] was stolen from the Sanctum
