The Renewed Focus on Crucible has Resulted in a Worse Crucible

In one of the Director's Cuts from last year, Bungie stated they would be looking at the Crucible and trying reinvigorate the playlists. What has happened since then? Well, some changes such as removal of SBMM from casual playlists which was good...and what else? Half of the maps were removed, some of the modes were shuffled, and then stasis was introduced. Original Director's Cut https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/48758 Director's Cut 2 Part I https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/48058 * Part II https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/48064 * Part III https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/48072 The crucible is currently PLAGUED by the following: 1. Cheating on PC 2. Completely broken Stasis abilities 3. Poor communication to the community if anything is being worked on in the crucible 4. Poor reward system in Trials of Osiris DISCUSSION 1. Cheating has not changed since the C&D sent to Perfect Aim. Recently, it has been announced that Bungie would take legal action against cheat companies in cooperation with Riot Games. Cool, but what will this result in? Players already have the cheats and the means to share them. This lawsuit will result in no change to the state of the game because the cheats will continue to be used. What WILL change the state of cheating? An anti-cheat will, and there has been no communication on Bungie's intent to implement one. It seems clear based on their actions and what has been said that there NEVER will be an anti-cheat though so let us not get our hopes up. 2a. Stasis is broken at the core of its concept in PVP. Below is what feels bad about stasis: a) Being slowed to the point that it feels impossible to mitigate/find safety b) Being frozen by neutral-game abilities (grenades, melees, etc.) c) RARELY if EVER being able to un-freeze and find safety before dying d) Being frozen through walls by a Hunter's super e) Being slowed and/or frozen by a Hunter through walls/around corners because their shurikans have absurd tracking f) Shatter-dive one-hit-killing you despite being miles away from a crystal, being in super, having an overshield, etc. Shatter-dive is broken and the recent "nerf" did nothing to address its pain-points. g) Not being able to determine the range of an engagement with a Behemoth Titan because they can slide and fly so quickly that every engagement becomes a shotgun engagement. h) Behemoth Titan super seemingly lasting forever despite it having some of the most armor and greatest mobility in the game i) Behemoth Titan throwing glacier grenades and immediately sliding through them for a one-hit-kill as effective as the shatter-dive (see above) j) Warlock having an insta-freeze melee k) The length of the freeze for EVERYTHING except the Warlock melee 2b. What can be done to mitigate the above issues with stasis? Here are my own suggestions: a) Reduce the effectiveness of the slow with things such as shurikans, hunter dodges, and duskfield grenades with the aspect that increases the slow. Vanilla duskfields feel decent in terms of balance. b) Their should not be a way to freeze people with neutral-game abilities - they feel like a free insta-kill. Instead, melees should inflict some minor damage and a slow, but never freeze. Grenades should be treated in the same way - deal damage and a slow, but no freeze. IF the freezing mechanic remains in neutral-game, it should be MUCH quicker to unfreeze. c) It is rare that one can unfreeze and find safety if ever. Therefore, freezes should be insta-kills right? Bu then everything about stasis would be an insta-kill wouldn't it? Sounds broken right? See where I am going with this? Remove freezes from neutral-game. d) The Silence and Squall currently has an INSANELY forgiving freeze range. The range needs to be dialed back and should not freeze through walls liker it currently does. This feels like a no-brainer. e) Hunter shurikans not only should not be able to freeze for the 5 seconds they do now (see above), but they should not have the insane amounts of tracking that seems to increase exponentially whenever they ricochet. f) Shatter dive should never one-hit-kill anyone who isnt frozen. The fact that it DOES OHK unfrozen targets, even those in SUPER or with an OVERSHIELD, is absurd. Reign in the range, and it should never OHK unfrozen targets. g) The Titan class has long had poor movement in crucible. It is good they have a movement subclass now, but either the speed, distance, or frequency of their movement abilities, or a mixture of those 3 things, need to be adjusted. h) The Behemoth Titan super currently has the greatest armor, longest duration, and arguable best movement in the game. There is no downside to this super or class in general. The super needs adjusting in one of those areas listed. i) This issue is similar to the shatter dive issue. This combination is absurd. j) Warlock's melee is the definition of cheese. Insta-freeze on cooldown, free kills. This class as a whole, even the melee, feels relatively balanced in the grand scheme of PVP however especially in comparison to the other 2 stasis classes. k) The duration of the freeze on everything in the game except for the Warlock melee is far too long. You learned that lesson already though, apply it. 3. There has been next to no communication regarding the state of PVP. This includes commentary on feedback regarding the current meta, the sandbox, Trials reward system, the poor Trials Adept weapons, Survival matchmaking algorithm, etc. The community needs someone dedicated to PVP who can engage with the community and UNDERSTAND the issues in the playlists. Currently, the community managers feel out of touch with PVP and do not feel like they care about community feedback. To throw a dart in the dark, I would love to fill this position. 4. As alluded to, the Trials of Osiris Rewards system feels extremely underwhelming. Firstly, the token payout is incredible unrewarding and does not feel at all respectful of players' time. Secondly, Trials Adept rewards are bad. The idea of Adept rewards is great, it should have been implemented from the start especially considering its successful history in Destiny 1. However, Adept weapons ask the player to remove the popular Icarus mod, or its lesser-used bother in PVP, the Targeting Adjuster mod in exchange for very undesirable alternatives. Besides that, they are a slight color change. Lastly, Adept weapon farming should be more generous. Getting a singular adept weapon each week and unable to target farm a roll or curb the RNG in any fashion is ridiculous in a mode such as Trials where going flawless is incredible difficult for those not in the top 3%. *BONUS* Exploiting the third-person perspective (AKA 3-peeking or emote-peeking) is obviously a huge issue but it was announced that after years, Bungie is now "looking into it" so hopefully something happens. CONCLUSION The state of PVP is currently in shambles. Players are leaving the PVP modes, vacating Trials, and the only people who remain are cheaters, carries, recoveries, and those top players who do not mind abusing the Stasis Hunter and Titan abilities. I have personally quit playing the game as a whole due to the innumerable issues and can no longer recommend the game to friends. Again, to throw a dart in the dark I think Bungie would really benefit from better engagement in the community regarding PVP and taking their "renewed focus" on the crucible much more seriously. (Hire me, I'd love to).
