74: Prologue 2- Log 182 Dr. Finch

RECORD: Documentation Log E.P. Station, MTRLv1.18 IDENTITY: H. Finch LOG #: 182 FILE//DSC_CLASSIFIED It has been six months, three days, fourteen hours, twenty-one minutes, and thirty-five... thirty-six seconds now; since the approval of my Exo encoding project by the Bray company. I have ran what seems now to be hundreds of thousands simulations, making sure that the Exo-mind transfer is flawless. Yet to my disappointment I have yet to achieve more than a 72.599% success ratio. I am arriving at what un-fortunately seems to be a plateau. I haven’t made much progress in weeks now, and Clovis is demanding results. If I cannot make the breakthrough needed, I must ‘pull the plug’ on my contributions to the Exo Project. I will not be the cause of more deaths.... Perhaps, if I do fail to complete the project, I can ask for my position back at Ishtar. Hell, after leaving for the Brays like I did, I’m not even sure if I could land a janitorial position.. Clovis Bray has asked me to meet him today. I am un-optimistic to say the least.. I’ve heard the stories; we all have. I’m just hoping I can come out of this failure with my life. END LOG . Dr. Finch leans back in his chair in a hopeless manner. He begins to travel to one of many offices Clovis has, going over the many possible scenarios in his head before finally reaching his destination. The door to the clean, yet intimidating room opens itself to Dr. Finch, revealing Clovis Bray, and a single security officer attending him. “Welcome Dr. Finch, I assume you are aware of why I have called you here to discuss. Yes?” Dr. Finch swallows a down the tightness in his throat before he begins to speak “I.. yes.. I am aware you have summoned me here to discuss the future of my Exo-mind transfer project?” “Precisely Dr. Finch, I have had high hopes for your project; the prospect of encoding the human consciousness! Not only, granting eternity, but advancing human thought. Reaction speeds, cut down to mere nano-seconds. Clearer, refined thought. The future could truly become Bray! Having jurisdiction over human thought! I grow increasingly tired of the narrowness of the human mind; how others, such as yourself cannot open your mind to more solutions.” “I.. What do you mean by solutions?” “Your research could have been in it’s late stages by now Dr. Finch, you have wasted precious and in-valuable time. But you refuse time and again to go through with human trials. I have kept a careful eye on your progress, and it would seem you have made none in the past several weeks..” “I can assure you Clovis, I-“ “I am EXHAUSTED of your pitiful excuses Dr. Finch. We will begin human trials, and I want you to help me lead them. “I- I will not except these terms Clovis, this project is- is shotty at best! I haven’t even began to look into the mental toll this could potentially have! I refuse to let more suffer at the hands of. our primitive understanding of the Exos!” “I.. see.” Clovis Bray looks to the un-moved security officer. “Lieutenant, hand me your issued sidearm.” The lieutenant has a surprised look on his face but ultimately hands him the sidearm Dr. Finch, filled with terror begins to panic “Clovis.. I-I can make a breakthrough! Just-“ “SILENCE, Harold. You said you want to prevent more suffering, did you not?” “W-well.. er yes..” “Good.” Clovis stands, than points the sidearm to the security officer. He fires the sidearm to the officers gut, and slaps him to the floor with the gun. A scream and yelp is bellowed from the officer “WHAT THE HELL!! GHAAHH!! IM YOUR SECURITY! A loud groan escapes the officers lungs YOU PEICE OF SHIT! I’LL KILL YOU I’L-“ One more shot is fired into the officers skull, filling the already blood stained floor with viscera and brain matter “Pay your respects to this man Dr. Finch. Even when facing a bullet, he did not yield, but clung onto his pride.” Dr. Finch stares paralyzed at the sight of the dead officer, terror flooding his heart and throat. “However, there is no need to die for ones pride. Isn’t it ok, to just kneel over? Instead of dying pathetically like this man; isn’t it better, to live?” Dr. Finch sits in silence for a few seconds, petrified, only beginning to process what just happened “I...... Y..Yes.” “Precisley, Dr. Finch. We begin human trials tomorrow.”
