Hot take: sunsetting armor is worse than weapons

First, I agree that guns are in a really bad state with sunsetting. Bungie promised us new recluses and mountaintops and hasn’t delivered yet. And now we have archetypal vacancies… But at least Bungie has acknowledged that problem and they intend to change it. (They’re also reintroducing loot with nearly identical perk pools, even though the explicitly promised they wouldn’t… but that’s a different problem). But armor is an even bigger problem- not only because it’s a terrible grind- but because Bungie doesn’t even seem to know or acknowledge that it’s an issue. The odds of getting a usable armor piece (let alone the roll I actually want) are so low. And with how long it takes to find anything, by the time I get something usable, it’ll probably be a season closer to being sunset. I don’t mind having to rotate through my armor every few seasons. As long as you’re generous in allowing me to replace it. Bungie implemented armor 2.0 changes to allow personalization and make armor into viable endgame rewards. But there’s virtually no way to get viable armor. I’ve been grinding armor for nearly a year for 2 builds I want for my hunter. In that time I haven’t achieved either of them. I’ve gotten some acceptable builds- but not the one I want. Not the one I want to represent me and my playstyle. I know I might get push back- we could specify stats from armor from the prismatic recaster or the lure… but not really. A 55 armor piece just doesn’t cut it. And +12 in mobility doesn’t constitute a mobility centered armor piece. We know what constitutes good armor: at least 60+ stats (truly 65+, but at this point I’d settle for 60), at least +20 in one primary stat and ideally +15 or more in a secondary stat… but armor like this hardly even exists in the game. It’s ridiculous that in any given season, the best chance we have at any armor like this is from ranking up the season pass. And even then, I hope you’re going for the build du jour, or better luck next season. Here’s what I would want to see: for general world drops, sure let them be trash. We’re used to that. BUT give us a tiny little chance for them to drop 60+ or with a 20+ stat somewhere. Even if it’s 1/100. It would make me excited to check my rolls. For all powerful drops, 60+ total roll OR 55+ with guaranteed +20 or more in one stat, and a moderate chance of both. For all pinnacle drops, raid drops, trials drops, IB quest armor, and drops from activities whose recommended level is above the season’s powerful light cap, 63+ total stats, 20+ in one stat, 15+ in another stat. Higher tier rewards (like flawless armor) goes even higher, like 65+. In ANY situation where we get to specify “high roll” armor or “stat focused” armor, make high roll refer to 62+, and stat focus to specify 20+. And generosity is not the enemy of an armor grind. We wouldn’t stop because drops are too generous… as it is now most of us give up on our armor grind because it’s just not a good use of time. On the contrary, if we could viably get good armor AND if masterwork materials (especially shards) dropped more generously, many of us would get multiple builds for every character. I’d do 2 different bakris builds for my hunter: one max MOB and REC with high DISC for quick play, one max MOB and REC with high INT for trials/comp… I’d have at least 2 wormhusk builds, etc… I’d chase every play style I might want to use. And I’d do it for each character. I’d spend way more time actively grinding for amor, and I’d feel like my time investment was respected. Finally, I know people might say “stats don’t matter” or “armor isn’t endgame.” I have 3 responses. 1) the whole reason Bungie reworked things with armor 2.0 was so that creating our own personal builds could be endgame. 2) let me be the one to decide if stats matter or not. If you don’t care, fine. If I do, let me grind for what I want. How does it hurt you if I decide I want a 10/3/10/7/5/5 build. 3) stats do matter. Maybe not in low-mid level PvE. But in PvP it matters everywhere. Endgame PvP has little to do with your game mode and a lot to do with who you get matched against. If I go against Freddie First Day Ever on a trials card, maybe my stats don’t matter. If I go against Jake or Demetrius or Cammy or the G1 boys in Control, you better believe I want those extra 3 seconds off my cooldown. And if you still don’t agree with me, I refer you to point number 2. TL;DR: Armor drops are stingy as if we could carry our lucky drops with us forever. But with sunsetting, we need better avenues to more quickly get viable armor. Edit: thanks so much everybody for getting this trending! It's really nice to see the topic get some traction and visibility. Let's keep going all the way to #1!

  • Honestly they just need to go back to pre-shadow keep armor stats. 1-10 in mobility, resilience, and recovery. Maybe 1-5 with intellect, discipline, and strength. The armor drops favoring 2 of these stats ie. mobility of 4-5 and intellect like 2-3. We still get all the mod slots we have now and on additional slot like pre-shadow keep that you could add one more point in the base stats so if I wanted I could toggle between an extra level in mobility/resilience/recovery. Because now it makes no difference between having a 50-59 in any given stat. It's an arbitrary number and doesnt do anything than fool some into believing your getting stronger when it doesn't actual affect the stats unless it goes up a whole tier ie from 50 to 60.

        • Good take on the problems. Only sunsetting isn't the source of these problems. Adding sunsetting to the game only REVEALED the problems that this game has always had in generating loot......being generous with that loot....and makign armor a viable and healthy part of the loot system. Letting us keep stuff forever allowed Bungie to wall paper over these problems. Since everything they added to the game was essentially a permanent addition, they could get away with only adding a handfull of guns each season. They could get away with being stingy with power and with loot. Leaning on a bloated loot table of dozens of guns and armor sets that basically did the same things....to keep us happy and QUIET. But with Sunsetting, a spotlight suddenly got shown on all these problems....because Bungie can't sweep them under the rug anymore. The problem is that correlation isn't causation. Adding Sunsetting didn't CAUSE these problems. It just made the problems that were always a part of this game IMPOSSIBLE to deny or ignore anymore. ...and that's a good thing in the long term...because it forces Bungie to fix them. ....its a bad thing in the short term....because it HURTS. But its always hurt. People were feeling this same sense of boredom and the game being UNREWARDING last year. They just didn't have a VILLAIN (sunsetting) to rage at and blame it all on. But this is nothing new.

          • Sunsetting doesn't cause any problems. It reveals them. We've always known they've been bad at weapon type/archetype representation. We've always known armor is basically just a stat sheet. We've always known light level is just a way to time gate content. And we've always known that grinding for God rolls on either weapons or armor has been awful. Everyone wants to blame Sunsetting for these things when Sunsetting didn't cause them. I'm not against armor having more of a reason to chase each season (like Blackburn hinted at,) but ideally what SHOULD happen is light level becomes an actual value for power. Bungie can easily create difficulty switches using the contest modifier and the actual difficulty adjustments with the nightfalls we already have. There's no reason LL needs to be tied to that. Bungie is currently working on giving us more perm ways to do targeted loot farming which is what we've sorely needed. Now all they need to do is deliver on powerful interesting legendaries.

            • If they gave us armor set bonuses then at least armor sunsetting would have a somewhat legitimate claim.

                    • Definitely isn’t a hot take. Practically everyone I’ve spoken to and heard feedback from about sunsetting has agreed that sunsetting armor makes zero sense. Bungie doesn’t even have a valid explanation to why they’re doing it.

It took me until now to get my third pair of Ophidian Aspect. My first one was in Season of Dawn and my second one was earlier this season. Both were okay stat splits but if there was almost a year-long gap between getting just another Ophidian Aspect, then how long will it take for me to get similar stat splits for my current armor? Luckily my third pair was the stat split I wanted, but it’s taken me almost a year to replace 1/4 of my build(class items don’t count since they’re all basically the same). A YEAR FOR ONLY 1 REPLACEMENT!

                          • Please take what I am about to tell you as constructive advice, not a rant. Your game history shows that you play just sporadically. To obtain great armor and plenty of resources you must play most days of the week, preferably every day. This does not mean you have to play 8 hours every day. I play only the core activities -- strikes, Gambit, Crucible, patrol -- and there is no end to the abundance of resources and good armor that I receive. For example, while playing for the weekly Crucible pinnacle rewards this morning on a single character, one of the items I received was 1256 Gauntlets with 63 stat roll, including 25 Resilience and 21 Intellect. Other Gauntlets on this character have a base stat of 60 and above. The equipped pair has a base stat of 67 -- and that's just one type of armor. Keep in mind that I play NO endgame content. Nevertheless, I obtained a great amount of resources, including nearly 1,800 Enhancement Cores and dozens of Prisms and Ascendant Shards. Another important point: watch most streamers, and you will notice that many of them don't have even one stat at 100 level. Yet they are the top player in many matches. This is proof that you don't need a double or triple 100 build to succeed. Lastly, your account shows that you are on 4 gaming platforms -- Steam, PSN, Xbox, and Stadia. You are dividing your attention in too many ways. I play only on Xbox, and I never have a shortage of good drops or resources.

                            • Don't think it's a hot take. Pretty sure most people hate Armor sunsetting significantly more than Weapon sunsetting. At least with weapons you can find an easy and cheap replacement the next season for gear that's being sunset. Like for example, I love Line in the Sand and it's being sunset next season, but I have a good Corsair's Wrath to replace it. However, with Armor? It's not as easy. You need JUST the right stat roll + distribution, then you need to dump Enhancement Prisms + an Ascendant Shard on top of that to replace your sunset armor. The time + effort spent on armor is pretty significant, and only having the armor last just a few seasons is ridiculous. People are just going to stop caring about either-- 1) Masterworking their armor 2) Grinding for their ideal stat roll/distribution Neither is a good outcome.

I have strange luck with armor this season (please don’t bash me). I managed to get several real very high intellect armor pieces from both iron banner and surprisingly, empire hunts. In fact, on some pieces it’s over 25.

Worse, the amount of grinding you need to find that perfect set of armour (or armours, sometimes you need three, one for each activity) is often pointless as by the time you get it, you've got to shard it and start all over for the new season.
