Armour sunsetting is pointless. Can even one person give one good reason for it?

Weapons I can kind of understand, I would've done it differently, but armour being sunset is, to my mind, completely pointless and ONLY serves to waste our time and artificially increase the grind. Can anyone give me a solid reason why armour needs sunsetting? Anyone? Bungie can you give a valid reason? You claim to be listening but you rarely answer any serious questions. If bungie roll back armour sunsetting I and possibly many others could get on board with it.

    • They don't want you using the same piece of armor year after year just because you already have the stats you want. If every armor reward is an instant auto dismantle just because you have the same high stat armor from two years ago then half the rewards are pointless. Legendary armor essentially becomes the equivalent of blue armor once we reach the max power. That's not good for keeping players engaged. In other words, they want us always searching for the next best thing.

          • I’m guessing they did it to create an artificial grind. Like it doesn’t take long enough to get high stat armor with the roll you want for the build you want. So grind for 8 months to get it all worked out. And then turn around a do it again. 🤦‍♂️

For armor sunsetting to work, high stat roll armor and masterwork mats need to be raining out of the sky regularly. Edited for clarity

            • Grinding to replace sunset armour is content in Bungies eyes. Also maybe it's designed for the future transmog. Imagine grinding for all five armour pieces with the right stats to replace your sunset gear. Now imagine if you have to Transmog those 5 pieces again, with silver or "in game effort". Now imagine if you have a PvP armour set and a raid armour set on all three characters and you have to grind and pay to Transmog them again and again.

            • Bungie has been trying to implement more RPG elements to D2 for a while now, starting with Armor 2.0 and so on. Sunsetting is, unfortunately, a part of that process. It’s a common feature amongst a lot of the MMORPG series out there. The real issue, in my opinion, isn’t sunsetting itself, it’s the fact that they waited 3 years to implement it. Had this been a regular feature of the game at the beginning, then I don’t think it would have anywhere close to the negative impact it’s currently having. All that said, I think that over time everyone will adjust and sunsetting will cease to be a major issue. Once everyone is used to the life cycle of the gear they’re getting then it’ll be easier to accept.

                • Yes, grinding for loot is the only fun part of this game. If you never have to grind for armor ever again because you have an optimal armor set and it will never be sunset, then the purpose for playing ceases to exist.

                  • So that now, after vaulting half the game, they can artificially make up for lack of content instead of trying to put effort into previous seasons of gear. Sunsetting and vaulting were the dumbest ideas to come out this far into the game. They're vaulting to extend the life of their game by making you come back later, to replay the old content, so that the gear that was previously useless can now be reclaimed. What they should have done is implemented an activity that is accessible by quest after the beyond light campaign that can be found in the glassway. The activity takes you beyond a vex portal where a planet, that has been "vaulted", rotates weekly as a vex simulation as well as a second portal for a random "raid sim". This way we can still get all the armor, weapons, exotics and catalysts we are missing. This would also give them time to rework the gear for use in destiny's current state, but clearly thats too much work. They could even have a special nightfall-like strike that has a chance of dropping a material that can be used to upgrade your sunset favorites to current specs and roll random new perks.

                    • Whilst it's fairly pointless, it's not a big deal either. Use your builds for a year, then make new ones...🤷‍♂️ you're acting like you have to source new armour every single season.

                      • Sunsetting armor might have been useful if One Eyed Mask, Shards of Galanor, and other powerful exotic armors hadn't been nerfed already. As it is, exotics aren't even being Sunset. Sunsetting armor is currently pointless, and once Transmog finally arrives, armor sunsetting will be extra worthless.

                      • Since the season pass gives a g roll armor set every season and they cycle through the which element it will be, it’s a way to sell season passes. That’s the only reason.

                          • The main reason is that, if you already have a build and a set of armour that you like, you won't ever want to chase something else. New items and mods might make you want to change your build, but most sensible people store armour that could be useful in the future, so you'd just be pulling out stuff you already have. The same is true for weapons; why would someone want to search for a new loadout when they could just use Mountaintop and Recluse for all eternity? You may not like that reason, but you're going to like it even less if armour sunsetting is undone and you start to think "there's no incentive for me to get any of this", especially with Transmog confirmed for the near future. Realistically, you only need 3 pieces of good armour. Class items don't have stats and you're likely using an Exotic armour piece, the stats of which don't matter a huge amount. That gives you a year to find 3 armour pieces with good stats in the slots you need. It's not as bad as some people make it out to be.
