The Ending of Destiny’s Story

Hello everybody, I thought it would be an interesting discussion to present all the possibilities of what will be the conclusion of this long journey. With Lightfall being the last known (as of now) release for Destiny, I would like to speculate what we can expect to see and where we are heading. Firstly, let’s take a look at the significance of the original storyline of Destiny. There’s a giant white orb known as the Traveler which saved humanity from the Darkness during its darkest moments. We are sent out to be it’s protectors who are called Guardians. However, what if the story is much deeper than that? What if the stories you’ve heard of the Traveler aren’t true? Instead of the Traveler being our savior, it was the cause of the Collapse? Maybe the Traveler and the Darkness aren’t enemies but instead, working together? Perhaps there’s some significance to the absence of the Speaker. There’s many avenues the story can go down and I’m inclined to believe that the story is much deeper than what it may seem on face value. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what Lightfall could mean for the story of Destiny. Thanks for reading!

  • So i read down a bit and a lot of people think the dark will be destroyed. Imo that won't happen. There must be light and dark. They can not exist without the other. I think either Destiny ends with our system being wiped out and all of our heros dying or a state of balance being achieved between the dark and the light inside our guardian and then becoming the pinnacle of power, winning the flower game and earning our lives in the eyes of the darkness.

  • Savathun has been defeated with the aid of the newly acquired dark-power ‘necrosis’, and just as peace is within reach a new danger appears. In Lightfall, the emerging threat is our own growing reliance on darkness. When darkness tempts us with a third power, the long forgotten nanotechnology of SIVA, this triggers a series of events in which the Traveller gives into the darkness and for the first time is itself corrupted. Now a huge black sphere looms menacingly on the horizon and our light powers vanish. The ‘Dark Traveller’ is our new location (think black mechanical cogs, green necrosis stream, icy stasis crystals and tangles of red SIVA). As one of the few guardians whose ghost mysteriously retained some light we are called upon by the now vulnerable vanguard to journey into the dark traveller to uncover its mysteries. And so begins a series of missions in which we fight alongside our favourite NPC’s from the series (think hiding in Saint14s bubble, or Osiris bursting a well to assist us) which results in the permanent deaths of Ikora and Zavala. As our feelings of isolation grow, we desperately acquire new SIVA abilities. Our final mission ends with SIVA turning on us and killing us - all hope is lost. And then opens a second secret location - our own light-version of the ascendant realm. Within the light-realm we are reunited with Cayde, Zavala and Ikora and regain all our abilities! To complete the missions requires a combination of light and dark powers to demonstrate balance, and through our sacrifice the Traveller’s light is restored. The ultimate discovery is that the Traveller was never an external influence but a representation of our own internal struggles. The morals of its story are that by having good allies and not succumbing to our fears is what gives our lives hope and light. For the sake of completing following seasons, our ghost can then revive us...but the D2 story ends with us returning permanently to our friends in the light-realm (our very own Golden Age) and as our ghost travels through our favourite Destiny locations it laments our loss before reviving a new guardian so that the story goes full circle.

Light and dark end up destroying each other or crippling eachother. We fight Xivu Arath in a flagship above the Last City while the Traveler holds the Pyramids back. New Monarchy, Dead Orbit, Future War Cult, and Black Armory evacuate humanity. We leave the system and see the Traveler and Pyramids nuke each other. Calus contacts us and asks for our help at reclaiming his home world and in advance, tells us of an Athenaeum world humanity and its Eliksni allies can settle on. This all leads to a Destiny reboot or spiritual successor hundreds of years later where Guardians have become myths and humanity has found new tech and power to survive.

    • Basically theres gonna be one final raid where we defeat the darkness and then Luke Smith breaks out of the traveler and thanks us. Then he proceeds to sunset the whole multiverse.

    • We fall out of the light (light classes sunset) because we have let the darkness into our souls. The Traveler begins to wage war against us and we destroy it in the final raid. Darkness falls on the land as our ghosts die. Eventually we are a washed up lightless guardian that dies in the Club lost sector in the Tangled shore...it was a hell of a ride though.

My guess is after we use the power of friendship to destroy the Darkness, the Traveller will decide to peace out and decide to help out some other civilization. I just think no matter what happens the Traveller will leave. There’ll of course be some twists and turns that we could speculate about, but I’m tired and I want to sleep. Shit, it’s only 4:00 o’clock in the afternoon. Actually I work best when I’m sleep deprived or just tired, so let’s do this. The Traveller will be revealed to be a bird, and will eat the Hive Worm gods, thus eliminating the Hive as a threat. Tess Eververse or whatever her name is will convert the Hive to a new type of philosophy. That philosophy being capitalism. Calus will eat every Cabal who isn’t loyal to him, and will ally himself with the City so we can feed him Cabal like a choo-choo train. He also needs someone to remind him to eat his vegetables, or he doesn’t get Vex for desert. This will also conclude the war with the Cabal on Mars, so Zavala can retire and settle down with his new Cabal wife. The Fallen will be told by the Traveller bird to chill out, and that mama loves them just as much as their younger brother. Now with mom’s approval, they’ll unite under the super secret awesome Treehouse of Light. We have 2 rules in the Treehouse of Light. These are 1, we don’t talk about the Treehouse of Light, and 2, no darkness allowed. If we follow these rules and do our chores, mom says we can have lunch in the fort. To stop the Vex we simply use duck tape on all their portals, and now they can’t use them. Now to wrap up some individual threads. Mara will finally accept Uldren’s flowers from the Black Garden, but when informed Crow will just reply “New life who dis?” Saint-14 and Osiris will fly off together with the Traveller. Two birds and one Russian. A love story for the ages. Elsie and Ana Bray will re-establish Braytech. Successful business women by day, vigilante crime fighters by night. Someone has to continue the Brayman legacy, so Elsie will use her trauma to become the new Brayman, Ana will become Robin, Banshee will be Alfred, and Rasputin is the Batcomputer. It’s canon and you can’t change my mind. Shaxx will adopt troubled kids and turn them into the greatest people to ever exist, by supporting and encouraging them with the power of love AND YELLING. Shaxx is dad of the year, every year. Eris Morn with the support of her bestie, Ikora, will finally get therapy. Hawthorne and Louis will help rebuild PETA. Which is... just... so great... thanks Hawthorne. I won’t spoil what’ll happen to Difter, as I think that’ll be revealed in Brayman: The Long Dawning, which will be coming out soon. I think it’s supposed to be about the downfall of Spider’s mafia, with murders taking place on the days of holiday events. And finally the Ghost and Guardian will become a musical sensation with the hit songs: Unlocking (the doorway to my heart), In your Walls, Wizards from da Moon, and Guardian’s Paradise (featuring Lord Shaxx). In the end, none of this matters as NO ONE EXPECTS THE SCORN INQUISITION. Thus concludes the story of Destiny, the origins of a new super hero, and the start of Nolan North’s music career. @Bungie you’re welcome.

      • I think in the end Zavala will create a halo ring and tell the guardian to tread the path of the Great Journey. Then he will proceed to wipe out everyone. This will bring back balance to the force and destroy the Death Star.

      • <Given that a Shadowkeep ViDoc showed us a plan that goes up to Year 7, Lightfall being Year 6, I'm inclined to believe that Lightfall is a part 1. A moment where the Darkness, whether it's a quick and instant assault or one that builds up until halfway or even until the end of the campaign, attacks the City and decimates everything. This to the point where it makes Elizabeth's future and the Red War look like a joke. I want to feel absolutely hopeless for this campaign up until the very end, and then work on rebuilding that hope. Given the year gap and Bungie's inability to take much-needed breaks, a seasonal year is obviously in order. With the four seasons in addition to Y6 and Y7 campaigns, you could touch on every major faction. For example, Fallen for Lightfall, Cabal for Season 20, Nine for Season 21, Hive for Season 22, Vex for Season 23, rounding all up in Season 24 AKA Y7. That's when we fight the Pyramid Armada. That's when we win. Alternatively, Bungie could expand the gap between Part 1 and Part 2 by adding a couple years. After all, given my own expectations for Witch Queen, I'm expecting Xivu Arath and at least two Worm Gods to be alive after this war begins. There's also a personal thing in here because I also want a big Nine DLC because that's the only way I can guarantee new music will be written for it, and Prophecy was awesome. Maybe this proposed war and wrapping up loose ends is very Mass Effect 3-like, but I see no other way. The Pyramids are the enemy, even if we can use their power for good. The Winnower will not change its nature, and the Gardener won't change either. Let the Hive go extinct, let everyone else join up on the major alliance needed to beat the Darkness, nuance comes from Cabal and Vex plot threads. After all, if they set up Caiatl to be an ally, who knows what'll happen when Calus shows back up? Or how about the Vex, will the greater Collective seek us out in order to prevent the Darkness from wiping everything out? Who knows?>

        • Do I see any feasible way for humanity to win against the Darkness? No. Will we probably still do so? Yes. The writers couldn't even kill our ghost when it was frozen and quite literally in the hand of our current enemy.

        • i never really saw the traveler and the pyramids as good and evil, more like just opposite forces. and with that i believe in a balance. i don’t think we’ll ever actually defeat the darkness and be rid of it completely, just stop it from overpowering the light. as far as an ending to destiny goes, i’ve had several thoughts on how it could go! one of my faves is that, in lightfall, the last battle will be us on the pyramid facing the darkness. maybe in its “true form” (if it has one) or something like that. then, in the final fight, our guardian will have to do something drastic to stop the darkness, and thus, sacrifice themself in order to save everyone else. there’s a touching, heartbreaking scene between guardian and ghost, since they both know in order to save everyone this time there will be no coming back. and then, they do it. they sacrifice themself. i see it as something like using their light to blow up the pyramids somehow, and so after the touching scene, it cuts to the battle below and we see all our fave characters look up to see the pyramids explode in a brilliant, bright light. everyone is looking up in awe, but then someone out of the crowd remembers: the guardian was the only one that went up there. they try to get a hold of the guardian on comms but... no answer. then it turns into that scene in the avengers when iron man dies lol... or something like that. after that i can see it going two ways. one, if it’s really the end, then we see the guardian’s funeral. or two, if it isn’t the end, i see the guardian escaping death by elsie pulling us back in time just before we die then bringing us back. heck, there could be a whole mission where we’re stuck in the past for a bit and we see some characters that were before our time. (example: andal brask or felwinter) but yeah i thought something like that would be hella cool to see! it would be sad tho if that was the end and our guardian died. i would cry!!

            • I think that the traveller will be struck down like the cabal have failed to do, and the cabal was the closest, and we will have to resort to using the darkness within us. Throughout the campaign we will have respawning restricted so it fits with the scene that the traveller is destroyed, but during all the fighting we are doing the traveller is healing itself since the enemy forces are weakening the traveller can fix itself without being brought down again

            • extreme nachos and a great time for you guys, and cats under the stars are very nice. We can resolve this problem with our own business, but it would have to wait until we have clues. If you're already familiar with modal playing which is how you play, it really takes the best thing now. I've always loved it.

That theory has loooong since been debunked, very thoroughly as well Destiny's story is trying to tell us that neither side is inherently good or evil, and that both extremes are horrible. But even if by some miracle the whole "the traveler and the darkness are working together, just like in the original story" nobody would like that, since it goes against everything we've been taught and just screws up the genuinely nuanced take that Destiny has on "good and evil" At the end of the day, I point you to Drifters dialogue in the prophecy dungeon where he's transported to two different realities where Light or Darkness wins Now compare that to the reveal "they're working together all along". I don't know about you, but the former is waaaaaay more interesting and has a lot to say
