A Concept: Gambit

I'd enjoy this version of Gamibt.

I wouldn't enjoy this version of Gambit.

Indifferent.

This is an idea I had that could make Gambit a lot more inviting to players, overall. Think of the Menagerie but fighting against another team. Firstly, remove the "Invaders" aspect of Gambit. I want to state that I don't really have a problem with it and actually became pretty good at Gambit, overall, during the last season. But I do know it's pretty much the one part of Gambit that everybody who avoids it dislikes. Even those who keep playing still aren't fans of it. So, I would remove it and replace it with something different that also feeds into the way the game would play. Gambit would still be just one round, instead of best of three, to keep the games rather quick and make matchmaking a little faster. Instead of 100 Motes deposited, though, it would bump to 150. The reason is because there are now tiers in the bank; three, to be exact. The first would have players deposit 25 motes. The second tier would be 50 motes. Third tier, you guessed it, 75 motes. Totaling 150. After a tier is completed, those motes are locked in and cannot be drained. I would keep the mechanic of draining motes by sending two or more Blockers over to start draining but would change how that works, too. With two Blockers sent, motes drain at 1 every three seconds. Three Blockers drain 1 every two seconds. And four or more Blockers drain 1 every second (which I think the current default is 1 per second, no matter how many blockers). This way, it's still something to be aware of and have to deal with but it doesn't send it so far into an extreme that it takes forever to recover what was lost. Keeps it better balanced and a bit easier to maintain to keep things fairly competitive between the teams. Which leads me to my replacement for Invaders... Roaming Blockers would be put into the game to replace both the Invaders and the High Value Targets. A Roaming Blocker spawns randomly on the map and, like the HVT, is programmed to run away from you and only shoot defensively instead of outright attacking. Roaming Blockers spawn in when a team completes a tier in their bank. First tier would be a red bar, second tier would be an orange/gold bar and the third tier (fully filling a bank) would be a yellow bar. Similar to the small, medium and large Blockers but Roaming Blockers spawn away from the bank, run away, attack only defensively and spawn with an elemental overshield. Killing the red bar drops no motes. Orange bar drops five motes. Yellow bar drops ten motes. This is to help recoup some of the motes that a player wouldn't be able to get when hunting a Roaming Blocker. Roaming Blockers do NOT contribute to draining motes. They are only there to keep the bank locked until killed. Everything, so far, has just been reusing what exists but making a new use of them. Changing a few things, re-purposing others, but still keeping the fundamentals of Gambit intact. I'll admit, the next idea is a bit of a stretch but still not impossible to do. Adding a... Gatekeeper. This is a mini-boss before the main boss. The Gatekeeper has a simple, one-round mechanic that's just a buffer before DPS begins on the Primeval. RNG determines the Gatekeeper per game (or per day/week, if necessary) which would be something like deactivating three plates, smashing it with a Hive sword or throwing balls to bring down its shield. Not a lengthy version of those things like we see in strikes or even public events but a quicker version. Just something to help break-up the game a little before the Primeval phase. Primeval phase would be how it is now with a twist. Envoys spawn to give you damage buffs when defeated. Now, though, they drop motes. Where the Invader portal would be is a new Blocker bank. Every ten motes deposited will create one of those "eyes" that create an invulnerable overshield over the Primeval that must be destroyed to continue DPS. Essentially, I took inspiration from current Gambit, Menagerie and a little bit of the public event we had last season (I forget the name but it was like a mini-Gambit public event). Re-tooled and re-purposed to give us a Competitive PvE game. The last thing I wanted to make this new Gambit feel more unique is that I wanted it to be Darkness Subclasses only. So you could only use your Stasis, Poison (supposedly) or whatever else gets added to Darkness when playing Gambit. No Light Subclasses. But that would require making Darkness available to all players and not posted behind a paywall which, honestly, I think should have been a thing anyways. Let me know what you think, though. I know that's usually asking for trouble but, still, go for it. If there's enough of a positive response (e.g. people just genuinely interested in this idea), I'll share one extra idea I had for Gambit Prime to actually bring it back... Sort of.
