If Sunsetting is gonna stay then it’ll need some SERIOUS reworks.

Let me start off by saying that I HATE Sunsetting. I think it’s a terrible system and to be quite honest it makes me not care about loot most of the time, and whenever I do get a good roll on something it just reminds of Sunsetting and ruins my mood. That being said it seems we’ll be stuck with this system for the foreseeable future so it could at least get some improvements to make the whole ordeal less painful. 1. If a certain weapon is still in rotation then remove the power cap on older (sunset) versions of that weapon. I have a couple nice rolls for the Bite of the fox sniper, unfortunately they have been sunset. Now, I was fortunate to get the exact same roll during season of arrivals IB, however my friend wasn’t so lucky. This version of the sniper and the sunset version are exactly the same so just remove the power cap so that people don’t have to regrind to get the same gear. Having to regrind for something you already have is not enjoyable at all and feels like a huge waste of time. 2. Make the weapon that are currently available better than what is sunset. I remember people that were arguing in favour of Sunsetting were constantly talking about how “Sunsetting will let Bungie makes more crazy strong weapons since they won’t have to worry about powercreep”. Well so far I’m not impressed. Other than Falling Guillotine and Temptation’s Hook (2 weapons that actually made me think that maybe Sunsetting wouldn’t be so bad), nothing seems strong enough to demand the loss of all our gear. I often find myself looking at older weapons and just wishing I could use them instead of what’s currently available. There is a difference between making people want to use certain gear, and forcing them to. Add a bit more appeal to the gear that’s in the loot pool at the time. For example: Weapon’s that are currently not sunset have and extra 2 masterwork stats (or mid slot or perk slot, anything really.) for the duration of their active lifespan. Once that weapon gets sunset the extra feature is removed it disabled. 3. Remove Armour Sunsetting. This was stupid from the very beginning and should just be scrapped. Get rid of it. Unless Bungie is going to make infusion dirt cheap (basically a bit of glimmer only) and masterworking cheaper as well then armour Sunsetting has no place in this game. Conclusion: I still think that Sunsetting is dumb and should be removed. That being said these changes (mainly number 1 and 3) would at least make this shit smear of a system a bit more bearable. Feel free to add your own recommendations. Edit: I thought I’d add this point that several of you have brought up. 5. Don’t sunset gear from destinations that have not been sunset. As it is right now, the dreaming city and the moon are somewhat pointless. Why go to a destination if it’s gear is useless?

  • They did this with the trials armor (they bumped it up during Arrivals I think). I got all of mine during Worthy and when I started back during BL it was showing as Arrivals.

  • I'd be cool with more targeted sun setting like pinnacle weapons like mountaintop for example to clean the meta. But really? Why do I have to get a new rampage outlaw handcannon when I own Midnight Coupe

This is exactly what I think. I really want bungie to see this post so they can realize how backward this system is.

With all due respect: No. No....and No. Before I explain why, let me say this. The fact that we are having to have this conversation, and the fact that the community is upset....IS 100% BUNGIE'S FAULT, AND THEY DESERVE THE ANGER.. But not for the reasons you state. Sunsetting is not the "problem". The problem is that Bungie FAILED to do something the right way from the start of the game. Failed to educated the player base as to WHY it was necessary.. Promised something that it could NEVER deliver on. Kept that CHARADE going for 5 years.....before finally having to walk it back when they were forced to admit that they were destroying their own game. As for the player base.....You have a right to be mad. You have a right to be frustrated. But if you want to still be playing this game three years from now, you need to accept that sunsetting is **necessary** for the health of the game. 1. All loot games sunset their gear. They are just better at HIDING the fact that they do it, and don't have to call ATTENTION to it. Because they dont' STUPIDLY promise their players that they'll get to keep stuff forever...and endlessly level it up for the life of the game. It was not the player's responsibility to understand that this was dumb....it was Bungie's....and they dropped the ball. 2. Sunsetting is necessary to avoid having power problems either destroy the game play.....or destroy the loot system. Its why your second point is a problem. If you keep making things more and more powerful. The player eventually becomes so powerful that they make a joke of the game. That is fun for about 10 minutes. Then its gets boring and people stop playing. If you try to withhold power to keep that from happening....people get frustrated because there is no reason to chase loot. The game gets boring (last year) and people stop playing. If you try to retun the game to the excess level of power, you force players with the overpowered gear to have to use it all the time (and destroy any build variety)....and you make the game either tediously difficult or unplayable for those WITHOUT that overpowered gear. People get frustrated...and they stop playing. 3. Sunsetting allows developers to manage power in these kinds of games in a way that doesn't destroy the game. (Its like an exhaust system in a gas-powered car. You have to VENT the products of combustion, so that they don't poison it....and stop it from continuing. So Sunseting VENTS power from a loot game, so that the developers can keep giving you power to chase after. The reason you don't notice it in other games is because the devs dont' call attention to it. So you don't see that they are taking power away from you in one area of the game....and giving back to you somewhere ese. Every successful loot game is a "loot treadmill". That is the NATURE of this kind of game. 4. Armor has to be sunset just like weapons. EVERY form of player power that is PROGRESSIVE (e.g static forms of power, like character abilities, is exempt) has to be sunset or you will BREAK the game over time. You will either get power creep....or a soul-sucking power drain that leaves the game devoid of power to chase. At worst the game will self-destruct. At best you'll get these wild pendulum swings of power (sound familiar?) from one extreme to another. Until the devs either blow up the game (Destiny 1) or they paint themselves in to a corner....and there is nowhere else to go. The game becomes unsustainable. Unmanageable....and dies with a whimper instead of a "bang". Which is where The Division 2 is right now. They chased Bungie down this same rabbit hole...and that game is slowly dying right now. I'm trying to play through its current season and the game is straining and struggling trying to find me people to play with on PSN.

            • Honestly I'm ok with sun setting. What I'm not ok with is the return on your materials. Armor isn't easy to masterwork. Atleast give me a full refund on prisms and shards.

            • You said nothing I disagree with. Well done. It is obnoxious as hell to have to re-grind armor just because, it is downright inexcusable to make players re-grind for god roll weapons that they already have, weapons from Europa are dangerously close to being garbage, weapons from the season pass aren't even meta-relevant (why in the hell would I use an arc 120rpm GL without Full Court when I have one that does have Full Court? 180 scouts are trash, 600 SMG's are okay, but why would you use one over a 600 Auto, Linear Fusions are in DIRE need of a buff, so the only weapon actually worth chasing is the wave frame special GL), and all of the weapons and armor from two expansions THAT STILL COST MONEY TO PLAY are useless in the end game. Sunsetting is acceptable in a game where weapons are basically just stat sticks. It is NOT acceptable in a game that requires you to put in hours upon hours to get the perk rolls that you want on your guns. Sunsetting is extremely disrespectful of the time investment that you demand of your player base. NOT. COOL. BUNGIE.

            • Not sure if maybe you referred to this but Dreaming City and Moon gear shouldn't be sunset, especially since those are still paid expansions. Nightmare hunts and Pit of Heresy (still good for mats) are almost dead. No reason to do so many activities now it's sad.

              4. Don't sunset weapons that won't have any replacements in the following season. In this season, there are currently no Rapid-Fire Frame pulse rifles that haven't been Sunset. No Void bow to replace Subtle Calamity. No Void or Arc Linear Fusion Rifles. No Void Snipers. No Void SMG. No Lightweight or Aggressive swords for the Hunter and Titan. No kinetic Rapid-Fire Frame autorifles, other than Steelfeather Repeater, which is unobtainable. No Aggressive Burst pulse rifles. No Arc Scout Rifles 5. Don't sunset weapons and armor from non-Vaulted locations and game modes The Dreaming City, Nessus, and the Moon should not have their gear sunset when they are still in the game. Additionally, some or most of the weapons from Gambit should be brought back. There was no reason to sunset them, especially if they can still drop from Infamy Rank resets.

              • the economy for master working armor also needs to be done away with if they’re going to keep sunsetting this way. i wouldn’t mind sunsetting armor and weapons if they made it cheaper and didn’t mean anything with materials. my time is limited and by the time i do anything this crap is gonna get sunset. i don’t want to play if that’s the deal. i can’t say i won’t play anymore but i will never BUY any of the updates. i can get away with the free to play stuff. i feel like such a fool buying beyond light and all the seasons before i knew what luke smith had in store.

              • Cost to masterwork armor is way too high. If armor is going to be sunset the resource cost needs to be closer to where weapons are.

Bungie have thus far bungled sunsetting horribly. They got the removal down but they forgot to actually add weapons back in, introduce more and better weapon perks and are continuing to ignore the CONSTANT feedback about how armor needs to be made exempt from sunsetting if that is to stay despite the vast majority even now being against it. Furthermore, Bungie really need to move away from the free to play model. Its hurting the dedicated player base with the seasonal model and ceaseless and meaningless grind, all the while its also driving new players away anyway because the grind is boring and there's no real campaign. As it stands I don't think Beyond Light is even worth buying if you do just want to play the campaign because its just not long enough and after all you're left with is a grind that's killing the player base. We just got off a content drought after the delay on BL in the first place leaving us with nothing to do and when we get something its a few hour campaign followed up by a grindy quest that you have to repeat on each character to unlock the new subclasses fully thats being passed off as content.

              • Sorry didn't read your post just sunsetting it's a pretty shitty thing todo on my opinion all those hrs days weeks grinding for stuff to be technically removed ie pve and content like leviathan raids, what is the reasoning behind this? We all have a say since we've spent hundreds £ s on this game I spent quite abit on the beyond light beat story all 3 classes aquired aspects & fragments nothing really todo.. back to eso.

              • You are assuming that Bungle cares if we dislike sunsetting. Their only goal is to make money. They think that grinding accomplishes that, and maybe it does, so they cap weapons we like and have us grind for them again, but reskinned. They don't care one tiny bit how many complaints they get as long as we keep giving them cash. I've stopped paying and won't give them a penny until they start showing the players more respect. I'm not optimistic.

              • Remarkably well thought out. As many others have said, yourself included, the topic of sunsetting is... well that's a topic we could all debate until several Cows decide on coming home. I entirely 100000% agree with you on armor though, hands freaking down. My god. I had entire sets, I was forced to outright scrap once this started. Sets of MW'd armor, all useless to me. I was, not happy. I also feel the whole, 'hey I have this weapon and it's good till the end of this season but now I can get another version of it that'll last me a year' mindtrip bogus stuff. Hate that crap. I sadly however also see the need to have sunset specific things, and why they thought this could work overall. I am uncertain it has worked THUS FAR but.. eh.. we'll see?

              • I'd like to add a fourth point. Please make all the items currently available to get not sunset. If I go to Failsafe, for instance, she is a completely useless vendor, for whatever reason. Still in the game, but everything (or at least everything I saw) was capped at 1060. She has randomly-rolled armor for sale too, like Devrim, but her stuff is sunset already so there's no reason to buy it; you could achieve the same result by just using your good armor from last season, or the one before, or the one before that, or... you get the picture. If you can get a piece of gear to drop in the game, it should be usable. Blues drop up to like 1250; why can't all the currently-obtainable legendaries?

              • The solution to sunsetting is to stop playing altogether until D2s final year of new dlc and seasons. Then come back and enjoy the content with basically no more sunsetting in play. Problem solved, right Luke?

                • Everyone on this post has an opinion on how to fix it, but what's funny is how Bungie broke it 😂 That seems to be the norm with this compnay, always changing things and things come out worse than they were before. See, some will bring up that "they did it in D1" but won't explain how they offered new loot that was worth chasing that it wasn't as big of a deal as it is now to some. That's because there is barely anything worth chasing in this game. They literally destroyed the incentive, for what? to collect mediocre loot just to say they added loot? It doesn't matter if anyone on this forum came up with the perfect idea of how to fix sunsetting. It's too late, Bungie broke it and there is no coming back from that.

I honestly dont know why people are complaining about the sunsetting of weapons. Would your current loadout be impacted if sunsetting wasn't a thing? 90% of the time people use the same loadouts that involve none of the weapons that have been sunsetted to complete the high end content. But lets answer your complaints in order. 1. The older weapons are being sunsetted because the perk rolls they have Bungie wants to remove certain perks or perk combinations for the weapons. 2. They will never make increasingly better weapons for succeeding seasons because you will then have legendaries that will work like the high end exotics. They will most-likely not improve on any of the weapons because of that reason. 3. This is the only one I can see a point in arguing about, armor sunnsetting is the only thing that is a little annoying to combat right now, but I get why they have it in. It just forces you to get new armor pieces. It would make even more sense if the armor had intrinsic perks that made the armor special.
