Critique of Beyond Light (review)

This is a review based on my personal opinion and how I would fix the problems in Beyond Light, and I would like to know other people's opinion. Despite what people may think, Beyond Light is not a bad expansion. It definitely isn't as bad as Shadowkeep. In size, I would compare it to the Taken King or Rise of Iron. But this expansion has some major problems. Through a list, these are my problems with Beyond Light (not including PvP, thats a messy topic right now). Sun-setting The majority of the Destiny community, including myself, HATE sun-setting. Despite the fact that it removes the gear you worked hard for, it also removes so much of the awesome armor and weapons that Bungie themselves worked hard for. People paid for this stuff as well, and your just going to limit people from using it? And I hate it when people say, "you can still use it, just not in high level activities". Other than the Crucible, what isn't a high level activity that isn't doing patrols? Everything worth doing is above 1060 light right now. Solution: Bring back etheric light. For my D1 Y1 players, they know what I'm talking about. This would be a endgame, once a week material that can be used to break the limit on power level on sun set gear and can start to be upgrade to the max light. If this were a thing, Bungie wouldn't have to use the excuse of "we want Guardians to try new things". We have to use new things to get to the endgame content. And by that point, we can determine if the new things are better than the old. Endgame The Endgame for Beyond Light is just really boring. The first two weeks of Beyond Light, I grinded like crazy so I could be ready for the raid. I had a lot of fun doing the raid, and also the Lament quest, and the other endgame content. But unlike Forsaken, the endgame was short lived. In Forsaken, the endgame had its own missions, ascendant challenges, the Shattered Throne, The Corrupted Strike was unlocked, the Queen Walks were cool, and over all, the endgame last for several weeks. I understand that Beyond Light isn't on the scale of Forsaken (even though its the same price), but it took me a few days to beat the endgame content. Solution: I think something way better could've been done with the Eclipse zones. They are practically useless from my experience, and just add the Braytech Transponder thing, which I don't see that as fun endgame content. And idea I had would be if you had sort of like fallen hunts. In the Eclipse zone, a new Fallen is attempting to seize power in the House of Salvation. You have to chase this fallen around the system until you corner them. Maybe even make it a puzzle. In the end, you get some high stat gear, and some lore dialogue from Variks and the people on the planets you visit. This is similar to a mini House of Wolves hunt that I think would be fun to do every week. The Empire Hunts are just the story missions fed back to us. Do something interesting for the Endgame. I might get hate for this but, Story Beyond Light's story deals with some major events, but still doesn't have that feeling that Forsaken had. It felt like they didn't care about the story they were making. Besides the story about Ana, Elsie and Clovis (which I felt was done pretty good), the story of Eramis was no different than any other Fallen expansion. "Wow, a fallen expansion were you hunt down the Kell, but have to kill there commanders first? I've never heard of that before (/s)!" Solution: We need to break away from the Destiny norms that are getting tiring. Fight waves of ads, fighting some bosses, and then fighting the final boss. This has been done for Dark Below, House of Wolves, The Taken King, The Red War, and so on. Eramis needed to feel like a new and dangerous leader. In the story, Eramis is stupid. She lets the only person who can allow the fallen to harness the Darkness die. Then, she wastes her time trying to revive Taniks for no reason. I can understand if Taniks still had SIVA in him, and she wanted SIVA and Stasis in one Exo Fallen (which would be overpowered), but he doesn't anymore; a failed opportunity in my opinion. Eramis should've felt like a smart villain. Phylaks, who knows we killed Oryx but still attempts to beat us (which I found daring), should've been sent by Eramis to kill us. When we try to kill Praksis, it should've been a trap to draw us in. Strategically, why would you risk the safety of your most important player if you didn't have a plan? When we finally get to Eramis, its just boring. She is you average shrapnel launcher fallen boss with a bit of stasis. And a complete idiot apparently. Playing the story for a second time was horrible. Quality of Life and general updates Destiny needs a major quality of life update. The shader system and general character customization system are the worst. There is no organization for the vault. The loot drop system has been trash for several years. If I got arms from one pinnacle reward this week, why give me more arms for my second?! Why do we have to spam tokens and gun smith materials just to get the arms and weapons we want? Why can't I hold more than 50 enhancement prisms? What are you afraid of? AUTO DISMANTLE PLEASE?! Solution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sgb-KZyBSZk <-- this the best solution for the shader system and character customization issues. If that cant be done, at least increase the shader tap space by a LOT and give us different inspecting angles. We should be able to organize our vault based of rarity, season, light level, etc. The collections page needs to be torn apart and put back together. There are some many things wrong with it. Bring back Arms Day. My D1 players know about this. Basically, every week, Banshee will send bounties for specific weapons. Maybe you can choose 3 different roles for that weapon after the bounty is done. Give us more choices. Don't limit people's materials. If people want to have 999 enhancement prisms, you let them do that. They worked for it. Also, increase the materials tap space significantly. It should be able to fit every material item in the game. I cannot stress enough how important auto dismantle for blue armor and weapons is. Every player's post master and inventory is full of them and its tiring. For bounties, in my opinion, they shouldn't force you to use something just to do it. Don't force me to run a fusion rifle or auto rifle. I would prefer if bounties just said, kill this or run this activity. Its easier that way. The less bounties needed to level up, the better. There are probably a bunch of other things that I forgot, and I'll probably edit them in later. But this is my opinion of Beyond Light. Its a fine expansion, but reveals Destiny's biggest issues. If these are not fixed by Witch Queens release, which is the most highly anticipated expansion in possibly Destiny history, then there will be even more angry fans. I'm already angry enough as it is with Bungie's lack of smart game design.

  • With all due respect you sound like you’re suffering from franchise fatigue. 1. The lack of sunsetting was slowly destroying this game. 2. Beyond Light is built in the same framework as Forsaken. Only the post campaign activities keep you in the open world instead of taking you out of it. There is actually more to do in Beyond Light post-campaign than there was in Forsaken. 3. The story in Beyond Light is just as good. Forsaken and The Taken King were just self-contained. You could know nothing about the game’s lore, and still enjoy those stories. But that also means that it’s cut off from that same lore. Beyond Light is woven into story lines that have been developing in this game universe for six years. We finally know why The Stranger took an interest in us...and why she had us go after The Black Garden. We know how and why exos were created. We know who Banshee-44 is, why he was rebooted so many more times than any eco...and why his memory is so fragmented. Forsaken is a cool revenge story, but doesn’t do much to move the ball on the greater story. Beyond Light is resolving story lines that have been building for years.

      • The game is seasonal. The content will be shallower due to every 8 weeks there will be a new grind. As long as this approach is at play and being put on to a 3 year old game... it will not go back to meaningful content. I am fine with sun setting. It is not like we really lost anything for pve and you can use your favorite weapons from all of d2 in normal PvP. Destiny is about exotics(should be more than it really is).. so now that things have changed, we have seen exotics take over in the list of most used weapons. There is no real end game anymore. If you have friends and or intend to raid, that is really all the game is... max power. Trials? Same thing so that you are not at an disadvantage. They may add strikes from a season... but I do not see that happening due to that would be free content to anyone that did not pay for a season. No crazy good weapons can come from the seasons... because then it would be the negative attack from those crying “pay to win”. The game is mainly something to do and the memories you make with friends while you are doing something. I enjoyed the dlc.. I got my “value” per play time. The season is *insert John Travolta confused gif* Is what it is. Bungies main focus is on the other ips they are working on and the contract attached to one of those games. So destiny is now just a dog chasing its tail basically.
