I had another idea for an exotic weapon unlike any exotic we have seen before. Introducing: the chimera mk. II! The chimera is a solar energy, secondary, mid-range pulse rifle with a twist. Like with all other exotics, chimera has a unique exotic perk. Chimera’s perk is called “split core”. This perk allows the user to “hold reload: disconnect chimera’s halves, allowing the player to fire dual-wielded SMGs”.
The chimera appears to be a single gun, but upon further inspection, you can see that it is actually two guns that are connected together. By pressing a button on the gun and disconnecting the two guns in some way, the chimera splits into two hip-firing, low impact, low range, high rpm SMGs. If you’re only looking for the gist, you can stop here, leave an upvote if you like the idea, or post any questions you have in the comments (I usually respond if I see replies). I will describe the perks, possible catalyst, and potential lore below.
Continuing on, the chimera is useful in many loadouts and a variety of different situations. Imagine you are tearing through some enemies at mid to long range with chimera pulse rifle and suddenly, a number of enemies appear very close by. By holding reload, you can quickly switch to the SMGs and continue shredding at close range. By holding reload again, you can switch back to the mid-range pulse mode. This is where the potential catalyst for chimera comes in (if not, then a perk). The catalyst grants a perk called “overclocked” which says, “Getting kills while in split core mode grants increased damage for a short time when chimera returns to pulse fire mode”. After getting at least one kill with the SMGs, when you return to pulse fire mode, chimera is granted a temporary boost to damage. This boost goes away when the player activates split core again or when the time expires.
Another major question is how the ammo will work for this gun as it switches between two gun types. Activating the split core ability reloads the guns using ammo from reserves like the drop mag perk. Lore-wise, the gun fires using solar charge cores. The pulse mode would have a typical weapon reload animation. The SMGs animations would drop the empty charge cores and reload by quickly pressing the guns into the new cores which would be around hip-level.
Every gun, like everything else in Destiny, requires some spicy lore that explains the reason for its existence. Here’s a sample lore for the weapon (I use my ign as a placeholder): “Ares-R6, an exo, black market gunsmith, regularly makes deals with rather sketchy clients, but none of his deals compare to the value of this weapon. While snooping through various sources known to contact the cabal arms dealer, Ares-R6 intercepted the schematics for a gun with a peculiar design. After countless hours of tinkering, frustration, and a failed prototype, Ares-R6 finally managed to design a working firearm that uses a dual solar fusion core with two firing modes. He decided to name the gun chimera mk. II.”
Thank you to all who made it to the end of this one. I hope you enjoyed the read! Again, if you liked the idea, leave a comment or a vote to spread the idea to others. If you have any questions, I’ll respond to your replies on this post. Stay safe and I’ll see you all on the shores of Europa!
