A (slightly) in-depth (and probably very inaccurate) look Into the origin and nature of the Darkness as well as its goals.

*Please note that this is my very first attempt at creating an in-universe book/report of sorts. Any sort of constructive criticism, positive or negative, is deeply appreciated. Tell me if I got anything incorrect regarding lore and if you want me to create any more posts like this.* Recipient(s):Guardian(s) en-route to Designation: Europa, Moon of Jupiter An In-depth Look Into the Origin and Nature of the Darkness Part 1: Preface Let one thing be known, the Darkness should not be trusted. However, due to the Traveler’s current dormancy, we can only go by the Darkness’ words, but only on its nature and origins, not its “gifts”. In a book directly narrated by the Darkness itself, it details its origins as well as the origins of what is presumed to be the Traveler or the Light. In this text, which the Darkness states is an allegory, the Darkness goes by “The Winnower” and the Light as “The Gardener”. The Winnower also speaks of a pattern of sorts, that was given life. Interestingly, it seemingly refers to the Vex. Whether this is true or not, is up to intense speculation. Part 2: The Flower Game The Winnower tells of its time with the Gardener in what it calls the “Garden”. The Winnower and the Gardener play a game, the game seems to have the same rules as a Pre-Golden Age game known as John Conway’s Game of Life. Rule One: A living flower with less than two living neighbors is cut off. It dies. Rule Two: A living flower with two or three living neighbors is connected. It lives. Rule Three: A living flower with more than three living neighbors is starve and overcrowded. It dies. Rule Four: A dead flower with exactly three living neighbors is reborn. It springs back to life. The Only play permitted in the game is the arrangement of the initial flowers. The Winnower speaks of it as a flat featureless grid with changeless blocks that are stoic as iron. Part 3: The Birth of the Universe and Paracausality The Darkness tells us that the Gardener grew angry with the game’s simplicity and wanted the growth and preservation of complexity. The Gardener decided to make itself a rule in the game. After this, the game became open to change, the Winnower and the Gardener fought, and eventually the garden had given birth to existence. And then, the Light and Dark played in the cosmos. Still able to change the rules, they played for everything that was. Paracausality seemingly stemmed from the Light deciding to be able to simply break the rules of the universe just as it did in the garden and it seems that the Darkness can break the rules as well. Part 4: The Wager and the Darkness’ Plan The Darkness is at our doorstep and has been attempting to tempt the Hero of the Red War with power and seemingly other factions with Darkness, not just within Guardian ranks but entire enemy races. The Darkness seems to also believe that the Hero of the Red War is the Light’s only play, its wager, its last line of defense. This seems to be why the Darkness is tempting them. If it could convince that even the brightest Light can be turned to Darkness, then it wins. It wins, not just by sheer might, but by ideology as well. Part 5:Symmetry How do we win? Can we win? What will it take? Simple; Symmetry. Ulan-Tan believed that through symmetry, it is possible to triumph over the Darkness. He also believed that we must return the goodness that the Traveler gave us by healing it. Then and only then, do we stand a chance against the Darkness. There was, however, a catch. The fact that we might need to give up our Light. However, this might not be the case. We might not need to even destroy the Darkness, only push it back. We would need a mediator, someone or something to make sure that the Light and the Dark do not overtake each other, only leave them in balance. This might even be what the Traveler wants as well. In one communication from the Darkness, it tells us that the Light decided to make a stand and prove itself right and that its people will choose to build and protect a “gentle kingdom ringed in spears”. That they would not fall to temptation, surrender to division, or yield to cynicism. This is the complete opposite of what the Darkness wants to happen. Part 6: A Gentle Kingdom Ringed in Spears That is how we win. It is so simple. Just as simple as the powers that can bend reality to their will are. The Traveler is a simple sphere, a shape that represents the infinite and therefore complexity. While the Darkness takes the form of a tetrahedron, a shape that has the least amount of sides and vertices, therefore representing power through simplicity and the final shape. Let us narrow this down even further. A circle surrounded by triangles. The circle represents the Last City and its people aka the gentle kingdom, while the triangles represent the spears that protect said kingdom. We Guardians protect the City and, in some ways, follow the sword logic. We do this by proving our right to exist by slaying our enemies and their leaders or gods. We are the gentle kingdom’s spears, and if we need to use the Dark to push back the Dark, then that is what we need to do. We will need to rise above the Darkness and its temptations and we must not fall to infighting. That is the only way we are going to survive the long night.

 • <Remember that the only viable balance that can happen now is both powers being exterminated. Otherwise, the only balance involves what once was back in the Garden, and the Gardener won't return to form, which means we'll be stuck with the Winnower's side of it. An unending cycle of annihilation until the universe is rendered final. We can survive by regrouping with more allies. We alone aren't strong enough to push back the PHYSICAL Darkness. Winning an ideological war won't save us.>
