Can We Please Address the Disconnect Between the Developers and the Playerbase?

I see so many people complaining about legitimate problems with this game. I've throw my fair share of complaints against the brick wall that is these forums and I know I'm just a drop in the bucket with no real sway. I fully expect my voice to not be heard. However, when I see a good amount of players agreeing on the same complaint, including some bigger names, and Bungie still doesn't seem to get the message, I feel there's a major problem there that really needs to be addressed. Does Bungie even look at these forums? I know there more salt here than the frozen food section at Walmart, but there are legitimate concerns that crop up from time to time, but go unaddressed.

  • D1 was almost perfect during Age of Triumph, after 3 years of community feedback. Then Bungie threw it all in the trash and gave us D2.

Hello fellow guardian. I have been part of the Destiny community since day 1 of D1 (not on this account tho), and in my mind, the game has had a lot of impact based on our feedback over the years. Everthing from how the expansions nowdays dont lock original content behind paywalls, like the ability to completely play PvP or any strikes, even the content you owned, is currently changed for better. It is hard to remember sometimes how things have changed during the years. Also, i want to bring out the perspective of the developer, since i have also worked on gaming industry, being both level designer and game designer, and also giving feedback by playtesting. I can pretty much assure you, that Bungie, or atleast someone at Bungie, knows everything that is going on with the forums and feedback, especially the bigger threads. Devs love to sometimes read "shitposts" from people and to get insight on what people are talking and discussing about. So the devs are not "stupid" or "blind" in anyway here. The usually feeling of disconnection come when actions dont happen instantly. Game development is a big and complex thing, and they propably have something more important to do. Secondly, the developers know much more about the game than you do. No matter how freaking hardcore you are, they know the stuff better, and they also know the future more than we do. There might be a patch/hotfix/update coming in the following months that addresses a problem thats hot right now on forums. Thirdly, most of the times, people just dont understand the complexity of these games, and even the most simpliest change could break a lot of stuff, or heard the economy, etc. This comment is written with bad english at night while laying on my bed, but i just wanted to give you other perspectives. Trust the Devs on what they are and will do.

      • If any community managers reply to this I’ll be stunned. Bungie only respond when the game is on deaths doorstep E.G D2 Launch fail/COO fail etc. That or when something benefits the player or new content is coming out. Any other time it’s radio silence. It’s been like that since 2014, 6 years. Yet still people think they care about the game. Shame really.

The disconnect exists because the game model breeds and perpetuates it. They can’t acknowledge and please everyone. It’s impossible. The game has always had an identity crisis. It tries to be too many things at once. Its activities vary so wildly that they are different genres of game and yet the current model is “do everything or miss out” and that’s just not reasonable, practical, or desirable to a vast majority of players. The game is and always has been incredibly rigid and has unrealistic expectations about how and why many people play games in the first place and the PvE/PvP connection seems about equal parts valuable and problematic, in which case is it worth it? As long as it stays like this, there will never be community cohesion and the same issues will persists and manifest in different ways. I’ve been saying this literally for years now. Destiny. Great universe, stories/lore, music, combat. All of which are the most consistently positively praised things about the series and yet the things most commonly criticized about the actual game model remain unchanged despite those criticisms. It’s a terribly rigid and unreasonable game model that is a detriment to all those good things just mentioned. And yet the game model remains largely unchanged. It’s activities need a massive injection of variance and to lean more on it’s open areas. It needs to let go of the very static nature of how it works and the game in general needs MUCH more player choice in how to pursue and earn things. Player choice is how you alleviate SO much community strife. At this point though, approaching what.... 7 years now? I have no hope that it will ever improve. It will always be the greatest game that COULD be instead of the greatest game that IS. There will always be fun to be had in a very general sense, but this universe will continue to be squandered on this awful game model.

          • Bungie doesn't care what their fans think. They know all they have to do is drop a vdoc and all these Destiny swills will be licking their boots again.

              • It’s not the Developers that are causing the disenchantment many players feel. The Devs follow the Game Direction. If the Game Direction is to create a F2P WoW/Fortnite hybrid driven by FOMO and financed via MTX then they create accordingly. Your displeasure should be towards SR Mgmt not the Devs.

                • Bungie considers these forums to be a “minority.” They really only pay attention to the destiny reddit forums, due to the fact they get SIGNIFICANTLY less backlash there as a whole. Your probably never going to get through to them here.

Your problem is that you think the Developers get to decide anything important when working for a company. The disconnect is between players and the owners/managers/investors. Players want a game that is fun to play and the other side wants to make as much money as possible. (Also these didn't used to be opposing goals) So whenever anything is changed/added/removed or whatever, the question isn't "Does this make the game better?" it's "How does this make us more money?" It is our own fault that games have become the way that so many are these days. We proved over and over and over (add like fifty more over's to this) that as a customer base we would not only accept but give them far more money if they sold us broken, chopped up, buggy, and extra grindy messes of games so that they can sell us the fixes later. The only way it gets fixed at this point is if the whales all stop being whales, which isn't going to happen so best to get a nice collection of games from before 2010~ish and just enjoy them.

Bungie doesn't respect their customers enough to address them. Answering community questions can't be that hard considering they already have the infrastructure and personnel to do it. Listen to the community for frequently asked and repetitive questions and answer them in the TWAB every week. Sounds simple, no? They just don't give a shit.

                          • Bungie legitimately does NOT care what the player base wants. They are a business and just solely want to make money. That’s it. No good will beyond that.
