Team Imbalance in Iron Banner - An Analysis

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the team balance in iron banner has been pretty off lately. Seems like half the games I get into are just stomping ground for better players. This led me to question whether Bungie has a team balancing algorithm in place. I did a short analysis in this video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bzzd01qTb8g&t. Supplementary notes on my analysis: On removing outliers: there were a number of games in which I encountered stacked teams of 6. I chose to remove these from the data set since this analysis targets Bungie’s team-forming algorithm, and 6-stack teams remove the need for a team-forming algorithm. On the chance of winning: The chances of a team winning are calculated using Destiny Tracker’s method of averaging the elo scores of each player on either team and then using an elo-based prediction formula to calculate win probability. I had my own questions about the accuracy of this method because the elo system was originally developed for the game of chess, which is a person vs person game. Finding an average team elo score was never factored into its creation. However, in this small sample of 34 games, Destiny Tracker’s method accurately predicted the winning team 85% of the time, which is significant. Why is the winning team’s average game score exactly 125? Shouldn’t it be lower because of mercy rules?: In order to remove any skewing of the numbers, and because the average game isn’t a mercy rule, I needed to calibrate all games to how they would play out without a mercy. To do this, I calculated the ratios of each team’s scores to be 1.87. Then, assuming each game ends at a score of 125, I used this ratio to calculate the losing team’s average score of 67.

 • I have a guess ass to why there are so many miss matches. Iron banner brings out both sides of the spectrum the bottom 10% who never pvp come in for pinnacles so if you get them on your team you can just get farmed and lose. Then if you or the other team gets the top % gods they will stomp. So you have two outlying factors that are more extreme opposites because iron banner brings out the best and the worst if that makes sense that’s my guess of what might be helping this issue
