Trials of Osiris - Population statistics (still really bad) plus an idea on how to change matchmaking to get more players involved (not mine but still good)

Here are the population numbers from Destiny Trials Report: Week 1 - 380k players. Week 2 - 340k players (-10% from launch). Week 3 - 300k players (-20% from launch). Week 4 - 278k players (-27% from launch). Week 5 - 235k players (-38% from launch). Week 6 - 245k players (-37% from launch). Week 7 - 205k players (-47% from launch). Week 8 - 189k players ( -50% from launch). Week 9 - 171K players ( -55% from launch) Week 10 - 146k players (- 62% from launch) Week 11 - 164k players (-57% from launch) Week 12 - 166k players (-57% from launch) Week 13 - 179k players (-53% from launch) Season of Arrivals Week 1 - 25k for Friday then canceled by Bungie https://mobile.twitter.com/BungieHelp/status/1271540433462558721 Week 2 - 132k players (-66% from launch) Week 3- 124k players (-68% from launch) Week 4 - 140k players (-64% from launch) Week 5 - 181k players (-53% from launch) Week 6 - 153k players (-60% from launch) Week 7 - 165k players (-57% from launch) Population still bad, and at this point it’s okay if Bungie feels bad because there doesn’t seem to be any priority on improving the mode. They also aren’t showing any priority on anti-cheat, or anti-paid recoveries/carries which destroy the integrity of the mode. They seem content to let it rot. I think that sucks because it’s an event that could be really good for the game. - FEEDBACK- In a thread about adjusting the matchmaking to have a separate pool for flawless players (not a perfect solution, but maybe a helpful one) another user named Corsair Badger suggested this system:
It needs to track on your account, like in the Triumphs for Trials wins and flawless runs. That's how you separate tiers. My suggestion. 0 wins - Tier 7 14 Wins - Tier 6 28+ Wins - Tier 5 1 Flawless - Tier 4 3 Flawless - Tier 3 5 Flawless - Tier 2 7+ Flawless - Tier 1 It doesn't solve the issues of people using burner accounts. For legitimate players however, it's account tracked and not card tracked meaning that people new to Trials will always match against people who are also new, and so on throughout the Tiers. It would have to track to the highest scored person in the Fireteam to stop carries. Or to still allow carries, they have to go straight into the +7 Flawless Tier 1 matches because the Sherpa is multi-flawless. Obviously the card still matches your games for you, but if you're on win 3 (and only have won 3 games on your account), you'll be playing against someone else who has likely had less than 14 wins (and no Flawless runs) so it's a fairer match and you're definitely not going to match against anyone who has gone Flawless multiple times. If you're sandbagging and not going Flawless on purpose, you'll get put into Tier 5 in the 28+ wins category to play against other weapon farmers. I know Trials isn't for casuals, but it does need to be more inviting to all players, including casuals. Casuals at best could get 1 Flawless because as soon as they go up to Tier 4, they're playing against other Flawless teams with 1 or 2 Flawless runs making it much harder. If they manage 3 Flawless runs, then they're now in Tier 3 and so on. This way everyone can have a go at Trials and not get stomped instantly. It's a solid strategy.
I think that’s a really solid strategy and a pretty well thought out suggestion. Edit: If you stopped reading at 7 tiers and want to talk about it, please read the whole thing first. Also the suggested system is a weekly ecosystem not a permanent one.

  • Guess there will be a rise in numbers when people need to play Trials to get the Solstice of Heroes leg armor.

      • I don’t think there is a real way to fix the issues plaguing trials in general. Paid carries need to stop, but that will just increase recoveries if you lock out accounts after a flawless. There is just no real way to fix it where it’s a fair mode unfortunately. Card based is probably the only system that will work, maybe skill based, but even then recoveries are legitimately an issue. Until these services stop being so damn prominent, trials won’t be fixed no matter what you do. It’s the sad truth. And PC will never be fixed because of the prevalence of cheaters.

        • Heres my thoughts: Matchmaking is fine as it is. Card based matchmaking works and is fair. The rewards are lacking. Where are the adept weapons (coming in fall I think but still)? The casual player needs to be able to get rewards too, so the one token per win is pretty stingy. I say up it to 3-5 per win and 2 for a loss, with the 3 5 and 7 token jackpots being increased a little too (to balance out the changes so there isnt so much token farming). Also the flawless glows should be permanent (and optional once unlocked) so more people are encouraged to go for it because then its a case of "if I can do it this week I wont have to do it again - which means every week people will keep trying) - a better system for this is the d1 year 3 ornament system. Bounties should be overhauled. There should be weekly bounties consisting of a bronze tier bounty which rewards the weekly 3 win reward, two silver tiers which reward token jackpots, and 2 gold tiers one of which rewarding a random piece of armour and one a random weapon. Then the repeatable/farrmable bounties should remain the same. The 3 5 and 7 rewards can remain static if it works better that way (I dont think so but its not that important) but the flawless reward should 100% be random. There needs to be more excitement as to what you could get and also this means that there are no weeks that people skip because the reward is bad.

          • I dont understand these forums. For all the casual players, the solution for all the problems is to punish the good players and separate them from everyone just because they are good. This is the same thing than people asking for sbmm...just because im good and i have 7+ flawless I have to suffer with longer q times and less quality matches in terms of connection?? This makes no sense. Card based matchmaking is fine the way it is. That system you are proposing is just too complicated. There is one simple change on trials that can make the casual players actually want to play the mode, and its removing the 3-win requirement to use the tokens. That way all the casual players can stay in the first games of the card farming tokens/bounties and then using them to get the loot. For us the good players, they need to adjust the flawless loot. Trials is an end game pvp activity and It takes 1+ hour of intense gameplay....just to go to lighthouse and get 1 enhancement prism?? Just ONE. Whoever came up with this reward on bungie should be fired to be honest. This reward system is affecting casual players too. Im a good player and I can go flawless anytime, but right now i prefer stay farming 1-3 wins against casual players because there is no point to go flawless. If I want materials i go to a nightfall which is 20-25 minutes and the reward is more than ONE enhacement prism.

            • I played Trials today, first time playing ToS in D2. Played with 2 LFG players, no mics, only playing to get the bounties done. We didn't even get to 3 wins, but the games were honestly more enjoyable than playing Quickplay for the bright dust bounties was tonight. That's how bad quickplay is now.

              • Seriously. Plain crucible is mad enough most days. There's absolutely no incentives for a casual like me to try it out. And I feel like that's the issue with a lot of players.

                • If you want more people to play, the answer is simple. Just buff the rewards. The reward system is so punishing for players who struggle to win. The bounties suck and are a major grind. Tokens are removed at the end of the week. Progress to next engram expires at the end of the week. Bungie needs to stop being so stingy so players feel like they have a reason to queue up even though they know they won't be going flawless.

                  • I’ll never play trials. My stats are laughable and I already get plenty of hate mail just for losing comp games on Xbox. Even got a couple death threats just for it. It’s why I’ve not done a single game of comp this season. Even if they gave more loot incentive, I’ll still never play it. I don’t need more people telling me I deserve the death sentence. There’s already plenty of things I have to live with in the real world right now. Don’t need any more guilt from dragging teammates down. I’ve lost a lot this year alone. I refuse to cause LFGS problems with going flawless. There are some people, like me, that, for all purposes, need to stay out of trials for the good of themselves and others experience.

                      • What happens with the people who do raffles who have 400/500 flawlesses? If they can't use their own account to help other people they will hop on other peoples all weekend. Then it's back to square one with lots of great players back in with the casuals. I don't have an idea on what bungie can do cos whatever they do they will get hated for it. I honestly think/hope they are gonna pull something out for next season if not then trials is doomed even more so than now

The elite players really need to be honest with themselves if they actually want to COMPETE or just farm people below their skill level and pat themselves on the back. I think we all know what the answer is, the majority of the time.

                            • I can only imagine what a lag fest it would be with that kind of a system where the population is divided into so many different tiers, on top of matchmaking players by the amount of wins on their card. Even if you took out the matchmaking by wins and only had these tiers, i bet it would still be a horrible experience in terms of the connection quality. There isn't even remotely enough people playing this game to support this type of system.

                                  • Trials sucks but that’s a terrible “solution”... What it needs is more rewards for casual players, not a matchmaking system that’s intended to increase casual participation by means of pushing better players away from the playlist.

                                    • I like this suggestion, but I would add a "decay" to the system of one "flawless" run for every week of inactivity. The 5-7 tiers are fine as is, and need no "decay", and this would have no effect on those who participate every week, but for those who choose to leave the game or gamemode for a long period of time for whatever reason shouldn't be account locked into a tier they may no longer be able to compete in.

                                      • Two things here: 1.) As long as cheaters are still given free rein on PC, those numbers are not going to improve. People that want to just play, have a good time, or challenge themselves in that mode will move on to something else, or another game entirely. Bungie hurt themselves here more than anything. They had months to at least address the issue. Instead they left a quest that, at best is an annoyance to cheaters but can be overcome in a weekend, to essentially gatekeep as a cheater solution. 2.) The elitism associated with Trials is too much for some. And I am one of those people. I liked trials in D1. And I would LFG as a non-tryhard just looking to challenge myself with no demand or expectation of a flawless run. And I found people that were of a similar position. And it was fun...until it wasn't... Too many people would insist that a win = justification to spam your inbox with hate. And too many people insisted that a loss = justification to spam your inbox with hate. What was just me want to improve and get better with a few individuals that felt the same became more of an exercise in blocking numerous Destiny players. I am not someone who is so hyper competitive the win is the absolute thing I need out of a game, and when I take a loss I generally send some GG's to the opposing team. I am on console so the likelihood of cheating is minimal, so if I get spanked the probability that the players are just at a higher skill level is basically assumed. But it seems that few others share this sentiment, and the times I won I was told that I was reported for network manipulation, and when I lost I was told to stop playing pvp because I am garbage. Also, in both cases, insert something crude about my mother. After a while that level of toxicity is grating. So much so I haven't even bothered with trials in D2. With my experience in Comp over the past year and a half I do not suspect that trials would be any better...

Match players together based on current number of wins on the card. There’s no benefit to solo players by adding this, but people who just want to play casually can. Some teams might make the light house, most probably wouldn’t but 🤷🏻‍♂️. That being said. Trials is dumb. Poor rewards, poor structure. It doesn’t prove who is best of the best, just best with the current meta. Imo, every week should be a different map, different game mode, different loadout restrictions. Pull people out of their comfort zones to see who can win in any scenario. “Everybody got your 600 AR?” “Yes”. “Alright, let’s go camp the tie breaker spot.”

As for separating player pool because of them going flawless is once again a dumb idea. You said yourself population is a huge issue. So split up the small population even more??? Trials in d1 was what bungie has classified as a success and didnt have sbmm or a seperate player pool. Whole idea is dumb. From what ive seen its biggest issues is it not being rewarding enough (no adept weapons means why would people play multiple weeks??) And cheaters on pc/ ddos on console. You said at 7 flawless you get put into the max tier. So youre telling me after 7 flawlesses you think people are gonna play still if every match is with streamers/top tier players?? 7 isnt even a high number lmao

                                                    • I was dicing with the idea of having the mode initially start off like Comp - SBMM enabled, but also laddered so that you do still face a higher calibre of player as you rise through the ranks. Once you hit, I dunno, Fabled or Mythic then you can buy a ticket to the playoffs, so to speak. It would help bring a little casualness to the mode, but keeps the Elitist ethos that Trials is based on.
