Sunsetting isn't a bold move, it's just a bad move.

Bungie, if you think sunsetting is a bold move, that allow your franchise to grow further, think again. All your communication, intention and justification are sketchy, wobbly and opaque.

  • They already did this before in 1 and that was when elemental primaries died along with the legendary that we have an exotic clone of in d2 that went from special to heavy. I was far more heartbroken when they took away fatebringer, black hammer, gjallarhorn than I will be when they dispose of what they currently have. Only reason the sunset is super bad is because of the ridiculous resource investment for masterwork. As far as armor goes I have yet to see a single item drop with comparable stats to the season pass armor aside from exotics, which may just be poor rng on my part. Dismantle returning material cost fully would go a long way in making people less salty about this and also encourage people to have multiple sets of armor to change up their build. Maybe they will add good legendaries, but in reality given there will be a new element that would require additional grinding anyway.

      • For the longest time, I wondered what Destiny was all about. With the advent of this so called "Sunsetting" bullsh*t, I've seen people comparing Destiny to a game called World of Warcraft, an MMORPG game. Some also compare Destiny to a Magic Card game. Lol. When I hear this it makes me cringe. Destiny is not World or Warcraft. I'm not playing WoW. I'm playing Destiny. Why would you say Sunsetting happens in these games? I'm not playing these games. I'm playing Destiny. Lol. I'm not playing WoW or a Magic Card game! Why would you even justify they are the same and that these games have sunsetting? Destiny is not WoW or a Magic Card game. Now, here's the puncher. A year ago, they announced what Destiny is really all about. After five years of struggling what Destiny is to become, they finally said Destiny is an "Action MMO." Okay, what does that mean for the game? . . . One year have passed and I didn't really feel what that means or what I feel about the game. I still felt I was still playing the same Destiny game. They put a new description as an Action MMO game, but the game really feels the same. Now, fast forward to today and next season. They're implementing this so called "Sunsetting" and compared Destiny to a Magic Card game with sunsetting features. This comparison came from them, the makers of the game. Lol. So, after all these years, 6 years, I finally realized what Destiny is. Do you wanna know what Destiny really is?. . . It took them 6 years to finally say, "Okay, we are sticking to our story!". . . . . . Destiny is a Pokemon Game! It's both a video game and a card game!!! WORD!

All your communication, intention and justification are sketchy, wobbly and opaque.
Do you REALLY want to get constantly destroyed by mountaintop, revoker, recluse and so on in pvp? I’d sure love to use them but for the sake of PvP and pve, players will get a best loadout and never use anything else. Mountaintop-vow for 1080 nightfalls is broken powerful for instance and I’ve been doing it since vow came out. Why would I use anything else? I wouldn’t, ever Same for PvP. Why would I use anything other than mountaintop+recluse? That’s not a problem you want to have with a looter shooter. Players using the same guns for the lifetime of the game.

              • The justification for all of it - the problem, the fix, the future - it’s all leaky AF. This isn’t the studio I once followed so faithfully for 23 years. And it kills me to say it, but they need to hear it. Even though I doubt I count for much in Bungie’s estimation anymore.

It's worse than bad, it's just straight up lazy, after Vanilla they told us we couldn't take anything with us because D2 was going to be a fresh start, guess what we got our old stuff back, we just had to pay for it again. Lazy, insulting, greedy, and a straight up kick in the nutz. But we still play and still pay, we deserve it to be fair, Bungie found a bunch of idiots with money and exploited them, can you blame them for doing what they do, they might be half arsed in most respects but they played us to perfection, how can you not admire them, even if it's for the worst reason.

So far sunsetting means I have to quit using my Gnawing Hunger and start using my Gnawing Hunger. Yes you read that right, sounds pointless and redundant.
sunsetting and giving us back the same gear is pointless and redundant
Before it was even explained further, I knew it was a bad idea. Deep down, its just poor design. In D1, sunsetting was the problem, but infusion was introduced as the solution. Now, in D2, sunsetting is all of a sudden a solution? Again, poor design. Sunsetting armor is an even dumber decision as it has nothing to do with power creep, but simply making the legendary pinnacle weapons, with exotic perks already, into exotics would've solved so many issues without getting rid of 2-3 years of gear. Every bit of reasoning or explanation for sunsetting, thus far, has been flimsy, at best. And there have been dozens of better solutions that don't rely upon getting rid of guns like Gnawing Hunger and Bite of the Fox, only to reissues guns like Gnawing Hunger and Bite of the Fox.

                      • Sunsetting isn't fun, but it's not nessesarily the wrong thing to do. The problem is that it's an undesirable fix to a problem Bungie created. Bungie overused a technic called Accretion. The result was the game became bloated. Sunsetting was supposed to "reset the clock" and allow Bungie to reclaim the design space they lost through their prior poor decision making. The part that makes Sunsetting bad is that's not why they're doing it. Reissuing old gear goes completely counter to that reasoning and shows that Bungie was disingenuous in their explanation. Bungie is using Sunsetting to recycle content as a method of reducing development costs and overhead.

I wouldn't even be too bothered about sunsetting if bongo was still capable of making fun, powerful and interesting new weapons. But shadowkeep hasn't proven them to still have that capability. My favorite weapons in D2 still remain Y1 rehashes and Y2 weapons. I'm not using a single shadowkeep weapon, they are just... bad, or mediocre at best. Not the least because none of the new weapons come with scope options, severely limiting their range potential. I mean, what am i supposed to replace my focus lens, feeding frenzy, rampage blast furnace with? I wouldn't call that an OP weapon by any means, but there is nothing in shadowkeep that comes close to that, or (m)any other older legendary weapons i'm still using. Once my collection of go-to legendary weapons are forcibly retired, i'm probably just gonna rely exclusively on fighting lion (which i admittedly already love to use) because none of the weapons that have came out lately interest me enough to motivate me to even grind for them.

                            • Personally, I'm tired of seeing these posts. I agree they could be going a better way about all this but that is not happening. It's just like the masterwork cores that were changed to enhancement cores and all the posts about that never did anything. You guys can post until you're blue in the face but it's not changing anything. I've lost count of how many solutions have been given to this company over the years for a few things and it was all ignored. The only reason anything changes with this company is when the majority of the player base, streamers as well show how upset they are like the 2 primary system and no random rolls. It takes the majority of the player base to get pissed off just to get this company to do the right thing, and that right there is a wake-up call that none of you are getting through to this company at all, and never will.

                                • I agree with this so far. But I'm not judging sunsetting 100% quite yet based on this season. If beyond light comes out and there is a ton of NEW weapons to replace what we are losing I may feel differently. The only issue I'm having with it is that quite a few of the weapons I already had ended up with a new seasonal logo on them so the old ones weren't nearly as valuable so I had to chase them again. And I'm not a fan of armor sunsetting at all. I just don't understand how my armor is contributing to possible power creep.

I hear your reasoning but sorry mountain top is the best weapon in game for doing stuff the grinding to get this before your change was so hard now you scrap it screw you bungie.
