So can we all agree that destiny 2 is a mess for new players

The way the game is handled for new players seems to be a chaotic mess, when I try to get my friends to join and play with me unless me or other veterans are playing with them they’re totally lost and it kills there interest. Put yourself in the shoes of a person joining this season. They’re bombarded with so many quests, vendors, locations etc they don’t know where to really start, and they can’t tell which things are worth doing or not at the moment. They have countless bits of lore and story information to catch up with. All the exotics they need to have drop or exotic quests to complete, learn all the mechanics, unlock locations and activities etc Really just wish there was a way for my friends to have the game a bit more accessible to them

I began playing last week and thought I was handicapped at first. I thought I was the only person who didn't understand what the hell was going on. I'm very glad I ran into your post. Only reason I'm playing this is because it looks and plays so well on the PS5. But regardless of its charm, I'm always on youtube, reddit, and google trying to figure stuff out so this totally takes away from the experience. My motto is that a good game will always keep your hands on the controller gaming instead on the keyboard to look up answers for poor design choices by developers. The only good reasons to go on google is to figure out a hard puzzle or to get tips to kill a hard boss. Going on google to figure out how to activate your story missions is not a reason to stop playing and log into Reddit for tips. I think Bungie has rewritten the english language because for example the word calibrate is not used nearly in the same definition or context in Destiny 2 as it is in the dictionary. This is just one example out of probably a hundred I have encountered in this game that are just stress inducing and slow down the momentum of the grind. The charming qualities about this game are just good enough by a margin to keep me playing, but seriously this is the most unfriendly game to new players. I literally spend half my time on google trying to figure out what the game means when it's giving out a contract. Honestly it's a videogame it shouldn't be this complex, and in reality it's a simple game with very simple mechanics in gameplay. Borderlands 3 has more complexity with modding, spells, and combos than Destiny 2, and you get more legendary items and spend more time shooting instead of figuring stuff out. The problem in Destiny 2 is that they are trying too hard to sound intelligent and futuristic by compartmentalizing everything in complex folders when in reality it is a lot simpler than they make it to be. I bought the DLC's and it took me around an hour to figure out how to Activate the stories, and I'm still running into issues in continuing the story missions (My current technique is just clicking on all the planets and hope I find a story symbol. Kind of pathetic) I'm right now on this mission telling me to calibrate my progress, but sometimes it moves up % and sometimes it doesn't. I have no idea what I'm doing right or wrong. There is also this other contract telling me to go purify resources for an NPC but there are no map indicators of where to go or who to talk to. Sometimes it tells me to go find another NPC by using their name on their contract but on the map they have their job title. Sorry I'm not dedicating my time to remembering all the NPCs by name and titles. This is ridiculous. Another issue is how some missions are catered to try hard PVP players. For example: I spent about 9 hours on a long exotic contract to reach the final check point which is to do a full team wipe out 3 times in a row in a match as an invader in Gambit. This concurrence of wipe outs has to be in one match, if not it doesn't count. There was 0 PVP throughout the whole contract until the end and I wouldn't have taken this contract if I knew the final check point would be this try hard and this ridiculous. If I wanted to play PVP I would have played COD, not a game based on loot grinding and circumstantial moments at best. I have a high win % in gambit but there is no way I can wipe out the opposing team as an invader 3 times in a row. I doubt who ever comes up with these contracts actually plays videogames or can actually do what they are asking. I'm not a hardcore PVP player so grinding for around 9 hours for a long contract and then reaching a dead end is such bullshit. I will probably get that item by just pure luck. But now I have a bad taste in my mouth every-time I play gambit. It feels like I'm grinding the grind to get one item. At least in Borderlands 3 you can grind and there is a satisfaction to the mystery every-time you see the golden weapons falling out of the enemies. I'm just going to beat all the DLCs I paid for and get platinum. After that I'm moving on.

  • My little nephew has started playing D2, and I’ve been trying to help him get quests done. He just keeps mentioning bounties he has to do. I only know what I know because ive been playing since day 1. These new players need guidance and a cap on things they receive at one time. The game should take them through the story first to get used to mechanics. Having all these activities open up so early kills the interest and attention span of some players.

  • Yeah that’s why they need to rotate content instead of adding new stuff on top of older ones. That’s why they’re removing old planets and activities.

    • I got a few friends into the game and I honestly felt bad about it. They bought the DLCs and everything and have no idea what to do and every time they find something they like, it seems like the game drags them away. I cannot recommend D2 to new players.

    • Wait, so what you’re saying is that your friends are having issues figuring the game out? Do they not play a lot of games? Lol If you can’t pick a game up and learn what you’re doing, you shouldn’t be playing video games lol Oh, and you know it’s not hard to look up beginners guides online or look for guides to specific quests? And if you’re not willing to teach friends on how to play a game, why bother asking them to play?

      • This really hits it on the head. I purchased d2 vanilla and played for a bit as a carry over from d1. Got bored and quit. I have zero expansions and bought the season pass because Xbox gave me a 5$ gift card. Why not? So now after 3weeks of grinding one character I think I am finally starting to understand it. And I am seeing again why I quit. All the flying around just sucks rocks. And the load times are horrendous. Working out the confusion always requires finding a related video. What a grind.

I came across a new player in a strike a few days ago, fresh out of the tutorial. I made sure to give them a nudge in the right direction and pointed them to Amanda Holliday who would have some of the campaigns available to start (let them get familiar with the world, you know?). Also offered to help whenever they needed it down the line

        • First cut out the lore, who cares. Then, what are you talkin about? Theyre probably confused because youre telling them what to do and what to get to do things with YOU. Youre supposed to be helping them with what they discover, that they want. Leave em alone, because unless youre forgetting the game, it literally tells you what to do next, which is the story. But here you come telling them they need xeno or raids will suck. If theyre getting confused because theres too much to do then ill gladly switch places with them.

I had a friend who bought D2 at launch and didn't come back until Shadowkeep (not even Forsaken). He played it with a few of his buddies for about a month and... they all just stopped. They haven't come back to this game ever since. They mainly did some raids and quests and tried out Gambit, but that was about it. As for me, I tried coming back to test out the waters for Shadowkeep, but I waited to see if a more representative population of the community thought the DLC was good before buying it. Needless to say, I never bought it. I tried coming back for whatever else there was, but nothing just seemed appealing, and Bungie's garbage season model just made it even more discouraging to grind for weeks on end. I like to be able to play when I want to, not feel like I'm forced to play due to the threats of limited-time content.

            • I have zero clue why anyone who picks up this game for the first time today wouldn’t look at it and be completely overwhelmed and feel utter disdain. They’d likely get repeatedly stomped in Crucible, not have any raid needed items, and thusly be excluded from teams with players who have played this exact iteration for 3 years. There’s so much to catch up on in this game just to be able to play.

                • It is the worst new game experience I have ever played. With a broken scattered story that is so bad I couldnt get friends to stay for much more than a week. It is embarrassingly bad and it made me feel ashamed for asking them to play with me.

                      • About a month or so ago I finally got two of my friends to give it a go. I was super excited. I thought it was going to be great, leveling up and going through this universe and stories with them. I even deleted a chr so I could start from scratch with them. The very beginning was fun, replaying the D1 beginning (solo) but thats were it stops and the bounty fest starts. My friends were soo confused, disappointed and then overwhelmed by the pointless running back and forth, jumping in and out of content, navigating the menu screens. just to complete quests (lets be realistic, bounties). To be honest, I found it confusing, frustrating and embarrassing. I had been telling them about this game for awhile now, but sadly, new light is a mess. One of my friends said. “Why don’t the npc just tell us what to do”. And the other said he would have been completely lost if i wasn’t helping him. Anyway. They stopped playing after about a week and I don’t think ill be able to get them back in. I said it earlier, the beginning experience is a mess for new players and even vets. It is just another example of poor planning and testing. Also, Bungie, fix and finish the collection system.

                          • This game is not 'New Guy' friendly! Feel sorry for people that have no clue about the game and want to just jump on in. If you never started on Destiny 1 you won't appreciate what all happened in the lore prior to Destiny 2, with Crota and Oryx, the Iron Lords and Siva crisis, and Rasputin, Not forgetting the Exo Stranger. D1 is also a good way to learn the powers and weapon mechanics of the game. The community is mostly not friendly towards new people, especially if they have no clue whats going on and don't Know What To Do. New Light is also going to be bombarded by 100s of quests to do without a clear starting point except for maybe the legacy storylines. These New light players will also have no clue about what quests and locations are getting vaulted and what that means with half there quests. They won't understand why sunsetting gear is a bad idea as they won't have any gear worth keeping to begin with, so their ok with a clean slate. These are my thoughts on the matter.
