Destiny saved my life

I know what you're probably thinking. "That seems like a massive overstatement." "How much does your life have to suck?" "It's just a game dude." ¬.¬ Be me. It's fall, 2014. My enlistment with the United States Marine Corps has come to an end. I was a Combat Engineer with 1st CEB, which means my job - more or less - was to walk around at the front of patrols, looking very IED's with a hardly working metal detector, blowing up doors and walls with c-4 and other loud bangy things or driving around in a truck, counting down the chow hall visits and minutes until I get dusted by a VBIED or some Yellow Jugs filled with ANFO. I did two combat deployments to Afghanistan, going to some of the les savory and not-so 5 star areas within the country (Kajaki, Musa-Qala, etc...) for some very nice camping trips. There was a lot that happened in those 4 years. My life was flipped upside down in so many different ways I still hardly remember everything that happened. It's only a few years into my marriage and I'm realizing that I was a complete moron and did an incredibly boot thing by bother with buying a woman a ring, and I started watching my marriage fall apart. On top of that, I was stuck in California with no money, literally on the opposite side of the US from my home. My buddy (Who is still in the USAF) told me about some new game coming out from the creators of Halo. Enter Destiny 1. This game took my life by storm. NEVER had I EVER stayed up for almost weeks on end to play a game like this one before. Everything about it was all I ever wanted in a video game, and my friends got to play it with me, which made it even better. Now at this point in time, I was really trying to learn what it was like to just be a normal person. To wake up in the morning, suddenly without any of my old buddies from the Corps around. Truly alone. Sleeping brought nightmares mixed with bad memories, being awake brought dangerous and destructive thoughts. There were times I sat in my room, looking at the ceiling fan and just... planning. *DING* "Hey man, lets do the Vault of Glass!" Those messages from my friends? Those really pulled me back. Being [Expletive[ deep in Atheon's face brought me out of that darkness and gave me something to work for. Gave me another thing to think about. It gave me a small, flicker of purpose that brought me farther away from where my mind was trying to go. Here I am now. I'm 29 years old, Season of the Worthy is coming to a close and the Darkness is closing in. This... was a long road. Destiny hasn't been just a game to me in years, I grew up as a person with this game. I saw people come and go, enjoy the game and dismiss it later. But here I was, still playing. Now this is going to sound corny as [severe expletive] but, Destiny was more about fighting my OWN Darkness than it was combating some over-arching, paracausal bad guy. To me, all of those DLC's and Seasons that we didn't love, didn't really matter. So what if I never got to run Scourge, or get my Izy catalyst. I got to exterminate Dreggs on the EDZ while they were out getting Ether groceries and that -saved my life- Now I want you guys to post what memories of Destiny brought you from the Darkness. What did you do that made life a little less miserable, just for a few moments? Amidst all of the negativity, lets give them some Light back. Bungie, you guys saved my life. Thank you.

Upvoted. Thanks for sharing brother. But I would say Destiny put me in darkness for almost two years 2014-2016. I'm married, 3 kids, the managing director for a privately owned transportation company. During that time I almost lost my marriage, was barely in my kids' lives, and wouldn't have survived at my job unless I was the boss there. Looking back, I enjoyed playing D1 but the rest of my life was almost in shambles. Like a house of cards ready to tip over and fall. I quit playing D1 when D2 came out, and quit D2 in February 2019. D2 was not nearly as addictive as D1 was for me, thank god.

    • Hey dude 20 years service here. 4 years op tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Op Telic and Op Herrick ( British). So I can understand what you went through. It’s good you found something to help but video games can be pretty damaging to use as means of coping. It’s worked for you and that’s great. I have lost friends to PTSD and with most of them they went in sort of self isolation before taking their lives. The important thing it’s to not distant yourself from others and always look for help and not feel ashamed to do so. Good to hear your managed to pull through. Take care dude, life is as awesome as you make it.

Firstly, thank you for everything you have done and endured. None of us can truly fathom what its like unless you're actually living it and I couldn't even begin to formulate a proper thank you. I completely understand how you feel. Nothing is silly if it means it saving your life, whatever or whoever it may be. It just so happened to be Destiny for us, and the people we met through it. I definitely didn't experience it in the same degree, but I can say that Destiny in a way saved my life too.
I was 27 when my little Light was born, and PPD waged war on me...It was a living hell. Throw in a boat load of abandonment at that very point from pretty much everyone, and an abusive relationship I was trapped in, and your left with a new mom who just wanted to die. I hurt myself. Nearly killed myself. Stopped caring about my health and weight all together. Ended up in the hospital 3 times in a row by the time my daughter was 2 and a half. I had started playing Destiny 2 as a last ditch effort to have a life. Get back into an old hobby (gaming) while being a stay at home mother. The story captivated me like none other. I read all the lore I could before I played. Ill never be done reading it all. I met a lot of good people and have conquered raid after raid, dungeon after dungeon, and seal after seal since. (Ironically, my now ex got me into it). I must say though. I know these forums (Salt Mines lol) have a lot of trolls and just overall mean and immature people here...but there are gems here. One particular gem in fact actually saved my life. This Guardian not only helped me get better when I was sick and in and out of the hospital, but they stuck by me every single day since. They showed true compassion for what I was going through. Nearly 8 months and lots of after hours D2 time later (after my daughters bedtime lol), I was able to make a complete turn around. Didn't just lose a lot of weight...but also shed and let go of a lot of pain. Life was not easy growing up, and it all built up...until it crashed down. Because of this Guardian (whom I met on these forums), I was able to heal from so much. (And still am healing, we both know that its an endless battle). My daughter has a happy and healthy and emotionally stable mother now. Who finally loves life and loves being a mom. Who finally sees what's been wrong the whole time. I'm finding the strength to move past everything and do what I have to do for the sake of my daughter and I. My daughter just turned 3 and I'm so happy that I stuck it out to see hew now. She is truly a little Light...and will forever be grateful to Destiny and this special Guardian.
Thank you for inviting me and others like us to share our stories. It means a lot. Stay safe Guardian, Wishing you all the best.

      • Your friends saved you, not Destiny. I can just hear the Bungie execs jerking off to this thread, good job you made people who don't deserve to feel good about themselves to feel accomplished.

          • I get an off vibe from this. Destiny did nothing here, your friends did, obviously, you've said you've thanked them enough, but I don't think that means Destiny/Bungie needs thanking. Any game could have taken the place of your good times location with people that care about you. Hell, not even games, anything can. I don't think Destiny has the deepness to really reach anyone on such a soulful level that it pulls them back from the brink or gives them a new perspective or just anything that makes them feel. Only moments are like Ghost's reflection in Rise of Iron that could make you almost cry, and Cayde's death/avenging/final notes

            • I'm glad destiny is one of the few games these days that isnt rated M. I dont play M rated games, not because i'm forced to, but because of personal choice. I enjoy playing, despite that fact I do everything solo because all my friends game on Xbox while I'm here on ps4. I'm not super hardcore when playing, but I still play it for fun.

It was a stunning view across the Kajaki Dam though & FOB Robinson (Wolf for the US Troops) was such a lovely B&B 😆 Stay Frosty, Guardian, fresh air, exercise & healthy mind, strive for a happy life 👍 Hopefully Destiny 2 picks up and lives to its initial D1 potential

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe: attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. I played Destiny! All those... moments... will be lost... in time, like... tears... in rain. Seriously though...keep up the positive attitude and don’t be “planning” anything that can’t be reversed.

              • I don’t really like the game now but it did save me from depression it gave me friends that I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world and it gave me memories that nothing else has. If I never picked this up I honestly have no idea what I would be where I would be i just know I’m here now the past is in the past and I’m moving to other games for now

              • Regardless of my current mixed feelings, Gaming as a whole has saved me from a lot. Everyone has had patches of time where things didn’t make sense and sometimes the little things help out. Being one who battled severe depression for the better part of his youth and periods of my 20s , it was always good to log in to something that I could just take my mind of things. It allowed me to focus on things and the camaraderie of the raid groups I used to roll with during D1( also the group I used to LAN party Halo 2 with when I was younger) helped someone who isn’t super social figure out a lot of things. While no game has ever been perfect, sometimes Destiny has just been perfect for what I needed. Which is why I proudly carry on my forearm a destiny themed tattoo because while my interest in the game may waiver, it at times is the closest thing to a home someone can feel at times in a world that doesn’t always seem to want to make sense. Destiny always did. But that’s just me.

Destiny has been a really good game and experience to me regardless of the ups and downs. True I'm not happy with the state of affairs but it doesn't take away all the good. My gf and I both play it, we have a gameroom setup and we log on together everyday to Destiny or ESO (we are fans of Elder scrolls series as well). Love chasing loot, lore and every aspect that is a bit more MMO to this game. So yeah for me it's a shared experience, I can't pin point specific things because whatever it is we are doing I'm enjoying really.

Heh... didn't work. So the Centurion's bond brothers are pretty angry they lost their commander. They're leading a team to blow up the Dreadnaught's core. Core goes... most of the system goes with it. You're going to make sure that doesn't happen.
