why did the almighty not just fall towards the sun instead?

title, i havent found an answer yet and ive been wondering this from the start of SoW. also for clarification, im not referencing prior to engine shutdown i get the concept of orbits and inertia and all that. so the whole thing with the almighty is that it set course for earth and shut off the engines. im assuming the most plausible theory is that it used the suns gravity to slingshot itself towards the earth but that seems like a fairly weak explanation. has there been any explanation at all for this? edit: if not fall towards, at the very least orbit with a much smaller radius than 1AU

  • The Cabal pointed the Almighty at Earth and used the engines to go full speed straight at us. Then they sabotaged the engines. So the Almighty is hurtling through space at the same course it was moving at when the engines were cut off, because that’s how physics work (inertia, Newton’s Laws, and moving in outer space). Gravity doesn’t automatically suck everything straight towards the Sun, and the Almighty was already flying against the Sun’s gravity before the engines were cut. As stated by Newton’s Laws, it would take a new external force acting on the Almighty to change its course.
